A Mass of Players Released

Wed Mar 02, 2005 2:16 pm

Hornets Waive Dale Davis And Glenn Robinson

The New Orleans Hornets waived Dale Davis today, clearing the way for him to join another team, most likely the Pacers. They also waived Glenn Robinson.

Davis came to the Hornets along with Speedy Claxton shortly before last week's trading deadline in a deal that sent point guard Baron Davis to Golden State.

But the Hornets never expected Dale Davis, whose contract expires after paying him $10.1 million this season, to report to New Orleans.

Nets Waive Campbell; Center Expected To Rejoin Pistons

The New Jersey Nets granted center Elden Campbell's wish Tuesday, buying out the contract of the 15-year veteran and placing him on waivers.

If he clears, he is free to sign with any team of his choosing. Because he was released before midnight EST tonight, Campbell would be eligible for the playoff roster of whichever team he signs with.

Campbell, who spent last season and the first 21 games of 2004-05 with the Detroit Pistons, is expected to return to the defending champions after being traded to the Utah Jazz last month in the deal that brought Carlos Arroyo to the Pistons.

Payton Released By Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks today waived guard Gary Payton, according to Hawks' Executive Vice President/General Manager Billy Knight. Payton was acquired from the Boston Celtics, along with a first-round pick, Tom Gugliotta and Michael Stewart in exchange for Antoine Walker on February 24, 2005.

Payton will now be free to sign with another club, possibly the Celtics, Heat or Suns.

Well maybe David Stern should take a look at how pathetically easy it is to beat the cap.

Wed Mar 02, 2005 4:08 pm

the whole things a mess for me. Hello earth to david stern......we need some rules change here.......people who loves basketball find this stuff very funny (N)

Wed Mar 02, 2005 4:13 pm

Gary Payton was going to leave, of course.

Wed Mar 02, 2005 5:05 pm

^ don't blame him, he's being thrown around like a hot potato. i would really love to see him go back to the sonics

Wed Mar 02, 2005 5:14 pm

Score!!! Pistons get Campbell back....Joe Dumars owns

If you waive a player, you still have to pay them, and they still count unto your cap, unless someone picks them up while they're on waivers [people don't pick big and or long contracts off waivers, they just wait for the player to clear waivers so the team that waived him still has to pay], then they count onto that person's cap, but Glenn Robinson and Dale Davis are both expiring contracts, so they wouldn't hurt NOH's salary anyways.

Elden Campbell also only has this year left on his contract.

I wonder what will become of the Big Dog this offseason. I'm not sure he'll able to demand a big new contract anymore than he could demand a big extension this past offseason.

Wed Mar 02, 2005 7:54 pm

i doubt that he'd get any more than 3 yrs......i'd sign him to a 2yr contract @4mill/pr yr.......no more than that.

Wed Mar 02, 2005 10:08 pm

Damn, Glenn Robinson disappeared fast! And Elden Campell goign to Pistons.. thats a good aquisition for Detroit.

stern is not to blame. he cant just change the rules. the players union wont let him change alot of the rules he wants to. everything must be agreed by both sides and its usually the players union who wants this kind of stuff to happen. anything to get players more money

MLE is what would become of Big Dog, a lot of people can use his scoring, but no one wants his chucking and lack of defense.

What the hell are the Atlanta Hawks doing?

They're basically giving away players for free.

Thu Mar 03, 2005 1:11 pm

bah i have hated the hawks ever since they traded away dominique.

payton was out of atlanta at the end of this year anyways, there was no reason at all to keep him. same thing with antoine walker. the hawks are obviously not going to do anything this year, they might as well clear up some salary space for the offseason.

Thu Mar 03, 2005 1:19 pm

nj releasing elden campbell kinda lends credibility to the whole revenge motive.. doesn't fit with the nets uptempo offense nehow.. if I was rod thorn I woulda held on to him just so he couldn't play with detroit :D

Well we all knew he wouldn't play, so why have all the drama along with it, why not just release him immediately? The Raptors should've taken a lesson from this, and done the same with Zo, unless we were trying to trade him even though no one wants his contract, though they want his services.

Fri Mar 04, 2005 6:20 am

i think the main thing for atlanta was getting rid of walker to clear playing time for younger players. put the ball in the kids hands more often and give them some game experience. as stated above, walker was gone at seasons end anyway so imo this trade makes sense for atlanta.

They were probably negociating about the percentage of remaining salary that Payton will get when waived :)

Good move for the Pistons. They are gearing for a battle with the Heat in the playoffs after the Heat picked up Mourning. That will be a great battle. I like the Pistons over the Heat...but it will be close.

B. Wallace, R. Wallace, McDyess, Campbell...pretty tough front court to battle.
