I think chances are Big if you look at the Phoenix players last year i was watching basketball like evry average basketball fan.... and u wouldnt here a danm thing concerning the suns ... but when Kid CAnada came in evrybody know that it had a great impact.... 1st at the beginning they were on the road to break a record.... but Nash Go njured here u see the weakness.... Stoud, Q, Matirx and J J seams like nobody when nash is Not arround they never won when nash wasent playing here you can see the impact ...... I Can say that at the end of the season frrom my point of view NAsh would be MVP if the Finish First oin the WEST Conf..... BEACAUSE IM SICXK AND TIRED OF THOSE SPOURS the same crap evry years chnaces need to be made .....
THATS IT NASH MVP i would like IT
Sun Feb 27, 2005 12:28 am
Yeah, Nash is definitely a strong candidate for MVP.

you still have to wonder if they overpaid for nash. how many years does he have to play at this level for the contract to be worth it? 2 or 3? the full length? personally i think if they get to the finals at all while he is around it was a worthwhile deal . still i bet he is helping bring alot of money into phoenix right now so i guess its worth it from that stand point.
Sun Feb 27, 2005 2:46 am
Nash will win unless T'Wolves improve. If T'Wolves get far then Garnett is the top pick for MVP. Theres also Duncan-Nowitzki possibility, but my bet goes on Big Ticket or Stephen John Nash

Compared to all the other overpaid players in the NBA, Nash is a steal.

agreed

God damn how I thought Nash sucked those late 90s... Phoenix babyboy... Damn how I have to eat my words now
He is the modern John Stockton at the moment. Not the next John Stockton, but most similar to what Stock was during 90s.
Sun Feb 27, 2005 11:25 am
Stocktons legacy was his consistancy. Over a span of 10 seasons he averaged 10 apg, which is truely amazing.
My mvp this season has been Iverson, but he has to get into the playoffs.
Sun Feb 27, 2005 3:26 pm
John Stockton had a few 12+ apg seasons. He was truly very consistent as Matt said. But also think about his stealing and he scored in double digits too. You cant compare nashy to him.
I agree that AI is a candidate. Switching to PG and settling into his new position has been great for him!
Sun Feb 27, 2005 5:55 pm
Well the injuries are already starting, which was the problem people had about Nash, which was that he would start breaking down late in the season and in the playoffs.
The Suns have won their last 2 games without him though, and I guess Amare can score without him for the odd people that were saying he couldn't
He should be back in the next game, and it's good because Barbosa is only averaging like 4 assists a game, but you can't blame him, he's not really a playmaker.
Sun Feb 27, 2005 8:20 pm
I'd be surprised if Nash won the MVP, based on precedent. When the Utah Jazz had their finest season in 1996/1997, thanks in part to the superb play of an outstanding point guard everyone is most likely familiar with, it was the team's leading scorer - that power forward everyone should be familiar with - who was named the league MVP.
Sun Feb 27, 2005 9:17 pm
Well, Karl Malone was the most valuable player that season. He scored more than 27 points per game, grabbed almost 10 rebounds per game, and with 4.5 assists. FG% was 55%.
This is something that Phoenix does not have.
Then you also have to think about Nash as the trade. He was at dallas, then got traded to what seemed "much weaker" team, and see where the team is now. Plus you cant forget the hype factor, many NBA media considers him as the best MVP candidate, TNT is nuts about the guy. Many consider him the best playmaker the league has right now, and even as we can praise other phoenix players like Amare, he is still the main mvp candidate.
Mon Feb 28, 2005 5:43 am
i agree, but the nash/stoudamire combination is similar to the stockton malone combo, just more flashy and new.
Mon Feb 28, 2005 6:41 am
Even if Amare scored 27 ppg, 10 rpg, 4.5 assists and 55% FG, would he be an MVP candidate, and Steve Nash would be forgotten? Or does this all depend on the other rising stars surrounding them: LeBron, Duncan, KG, etc. that makes Amare blend in with the rest and have Nash stand out (11 apg) ?
Mon Feb 28, 2005 9:25 am
i guess you can compare nash to stockton but they are not really that close at all if you really look into it. stockton was never flashy or "wild" as nash is. stockton was also a damn good defender in the nba, one of the best of all time imo. nash is great for offense but his D is seriously lacking and he plays a very uptempo game. another thing you have to consider is nash has more weapons than stockton did, yeah stockton had malone but thats where it ends really. this phoenix team is packed with players who can put the ball in the hole. so basicly what i am saying is not only was stockton clearly better he also played an entirely different kind of game than nash does.

Yeah... Give me Stoudamire with those numbers and he would be an MVP candidate for sure (as long as Nash himself wont pour down even greater numbers with 25ppg, 10apg (he does that now though) and 5spg).
Nevertheless MVP is not only about stats (last seasons KG's stats were through the roof though), and statistical perfomance as such is not really the right thing to rate the player.
Steve is one of the best candidates for this years MVP. We'll see how the second half of the season goes, but he is helluva playmaker. Come on 3apg more than anyone else in the league?
KG would be a good pick as well, though his team plays worse (big minus for MVP candidate) and his PPG is 2pg less than last season. He has improved in assists though.
The third candidate is not Duncan but Nowitzki, who has improved almost 2rpg and 5ppg compared with last season.
There are others Id name, like Iverson and even James perhaps, but these two need to prove themselves. Iverson has had a good season overall, but how far the team goes is a question. Also Cavs need to go far higher than 50% that they have played last twenty or so games, and LeBrons perfomance has been lower than hoped for the past month. Today they have lost again, and LeBron had again normal shooting but below average otherwise.

The margin isn't as large as it looks because his team is also one of the best offensive teams in the league, and play on of the fastest paces. On a normal pace team he'd be averaging about 9 assists a game, so the makeup of the team does help him a lot.
