New NBA DVDs

Postby Andrew on Thu Jan 27, 2005 4:02 pm

Thanks to Matthew for the heads up on these after spotting them at eBay. For those who are unaware, the NBA is getting ready to release Volume 2 of Dunks! and Ankle Breakers.

Dunks Vol 2
Ankle Breakers Vol 2

I've pre-ordered both, since they won't be out in Australia for ages, they do play on most multi-region DVD players (including mine, obviously) and the exchange rate isn't too harsh at the moment.

Dunks Volume 1 was pretty awesome, though they did leave out quite a bit of footage from the 80s and 90s. The NBA likes to make 30-40 minute videos but with DVDs, they could be doing so much more. I was a little disappointed at some of the omissions (the segment on Darryl Dawkins neither mentioned nor showed his backboard breaking dunks!), but what's in there is pretty entertaining. I didn't care for DJ Clue hosting, but he doesn't ruin the program. The special features are pretty nice, too.

Dj Clue hosted the Dunks and Marbery Hosted the Crossovers, and let me tell you, neither of them can bludy talk english.
Crossovers were pretty good, until they got into Big Men, who may have good handle like KG and Shaq, but dont use crossover often. So they just showed films of their Post Moves?! Kinda makes you loose intrest.

Dunks were pretty good, exept for whern that Ass Dj guy would make noise out of that hole!
Who ever watched it, have you noticed anything stange?! THEY MISSED OUT KOBE!!! maybe coz NBA though he was gong to jail?!

The best thing about both of them, and i hope they keep in the next one, is very limited old footage. Coz if you watch NBA vids often, you see that almost all of them have the same footage of same old player. Derrel Dawiking breaking the backboard, DAvid Robinson's interview ect...

I want to see new stuff and new time players and PLEASE get someone who can talk!

In a way I agree with you about the old footage, but at the same time I think that all that stuff should be included. After all, you can do a lot more with DVDs than you can with VHS. Even if those players aren't featured heavily in the main program, it would be nice if they showed up in the special features in their own segments.

What's actually featured on the DVD is great, but it could have been so much more. Say, a main program that runs about 70 minutes, plus segments in the special features that include highlight reels for some of the best dunkers in history.

I completely agree with the omissions. Perhaps the impending rape trial discouraged the editors from including Kobe in the program, but it was weird not to include a single dunk of his, even in the credits reel. A lot of guys from the 90s were excluded. With the amount of footage they can cram onto a DVD, they made a lot of cuts. They were trying to hype the players of today, but as they were also selling it as a history of the dunk, it comes up a little short in that area.
