Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant, Jermaine O'Neal and four other NBA players have promised to donate $1,000 for every point they score in a game later this week to help victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami.

Bob Sura of the Houston Rockets, Jalen Rose of the Toronto Raptors, and Pau Gasol and Mike Miller of the Memphis Grizzlies also are taking part in the $1,000-per-point donations, which will be made to UNICEF.

Also, the Harlem Globetrotters plan to donate at least $100,000 and match funds raised by the sale of game programs during their 2005 tour to over 200 cities in the United States and Canada. The money raised will also go to UNICEF.

``As concerned global citizens and ambassadors of goodwill, the Harlem Globetrotters feel strongly about doing something to help those who are suffering, especially the youth,'' Globetrotters owner and chairman Mannie Jackson said.

Why can't every player in the NBA do this?

Wed Jan 05, 2005 12:51 pm

Some probably don't know about it, and some are too poor [not many] to do it, like Jerome Moiso, what if Moiso exploded for 20 points, he wouldn't be able to come up with the money

Well, that's why Jerome was just waived.

Jermaine had a big game today so that means he is gonna lose some bucks

Wed Jan 05, 2005 1:19 pm

ok then... O'Neal had 55 points so that makes
55x1000=55,000$

It would be good if they started this stuff from today :x

Why can't every player in the NBA do this?

Who are you to criticise about people and their donations? You have no right to... and besides, who's to say alot of other nba players havent donated already, and just not made it public? Just becuase you and I dont know about something doesnt mean it hasnt happened...

Wed Jan 05, 2005 1:42 pm

this is a great thing, im glad they are doing this.

and 20,000 dollars from an nba players salary is nothing come on guys.

Wed Jan 05, 2005 1:45 pm

Jermaine only donates money from the points he scores on Thursday and the rest only donate based on Fridays games....

I was going to say the same thing, some guys could've given money under tha radar, and some might be planning on other ways of giving, and even if they don't, we can't go and start judging them.

They don't get paid all their money at once though, they get paid every 2 weeks or whatever, so some might have to put that on credit

you know their job isn't easy.

Wed Jan 05, 2005 4:16 pm

I heard Darko approached the league with the same offer but they told him not to bother.

Wed Jan 05, 2005 5:02 pm

lol darko could've donated a thousand dollars per minute he gets for the rest of the season

Wed Jan 05, 2005 5:07 pm

haha, his riches are safe though after that Boston game (in 3 mins he missed assignments, turnover, missed shot, played no D and got dunked on)

Phoenix should donate $1000 for every win they got, and NOH should donate $1000 for every loss they get

LMAO

Good for him, it'll give him experience, since he'll experience more of that later in his career.

ROFLMAO at the Nawlins donation.

Darko could donate $1000 for every minute he doesn't get... that'd work out at roughly $47,000 a game.

Please. I was just stating how great it would be if every player in the NBA did this. I was not criticizing those who don't. Whether it's made public or not -- great.

Every NBA player should make a donation of some sort but it's their money and some are stingy, I guess. I think this a great idea as it will not effect the players that much because to them, they will make it back in a game or 2.

Just curious, when does this start and end on?

Thu Jan 06, 2005 7:18 am

For Jermaine, it is on Thursday. For everyone else, it is on Friday. It is only for one day each.

Urgh, right... all you said was "Why can't every player in the NBA do this?" you didnt say "wouldn't it be good if every player did this", you started to question why other players didnt do the point donation thing, which, quite frankly, is none of your business. I dont ask how many people here have donated out of their pockets...

Thu Jan 06, 2005 8:24 am

Why do they always have to be "1,000 per point" or "100 per sack" or "500 per 3pter" and cheap stuff like that? Why not just say "this year I'm going to donate my salary to charity for the tsunami." They need billions of dollars out there.

Neither do I, though I'd be surprised if every player in the NBA actually has. These are professional basketball players, making millions of dollars per year. I've donated what I can -- why can't they? -- regardless of if it's made public or not.

Thu Jan 06, 2005 9:15 am

I think this is great. Expecially proud my man Jermaine is up there (Y)

NBA players aren't the only rich people in the world, it's not up to NBA players alone to provide the money for every disaster that happens. If all the guys with lots of money don't something of that amount, it will equal to billions.

Yeah and what should Bill Gates and Donald Trump donate? Like fgrep said, the nba players arent the only rich people in the world.. how about the owners? why dont you criticise them too? And I hope you donated your entire salary to the relief effort before you started criticising...

Its not upto you to say what so and so should donate. It's upto everybody's conscience to make a donating, not the peer pressure of other people. You have no right to say "why arent they doing this or why arent they doing that"

Agree'd 100%, but some of these idiots should just mind their own business. Just becuase an athlete is a professional doesnt mean they should be forced to give donations... or even worse, be forced to make their donations public so they can avoid criticism.
