Team with the best players on it in NBA history

Postby VCFAN on Thu Sep 23, 2004 10:30 am

OK this is a kinda weird Topic but, if you could gather a roster for any team in the league from players who played for that team since the creationof the NBA, which team could get the best roster. The players didn't have to play for that team their whole career, only one season is necessary.

Mine would be:

Lakers

C Shaq (sub Kareem, then Wilt, then Mikan)
PF Karl Malone
SF James Worthy
SG Kobe Bryant
PG Magic Johnson (sub Jerry West then Payton)

Even though teams like Celtics and Bulls could build a sweet roster from the players who played on it in history, I just can't see any team beating this starting line up. Image going the court and having Shaq play center, Wilt play PF and Kareem playing SF.

Think of a team that could build a better roster than this one from past & present NBA players or maybe change my Lakers one around. Have fun and be creative.

Well I know there are better options but I want to try to make a team out of just New Jersey Nets. I'm not a guy who knows much about the history of basketball and older games but this is a team I could come up with off the top of my head:

C - Todd Maccolluch (when he was in his prime and healthy)
PF - Kenyon Martin
SF - Richard Jefferson
SG - Stephon Marbury
PG - Jason Kidd

I know there are better teams I could make but I just wanted to see what I can do with the Nets.

how about the celtics

Bill Russell
Kevin Mchale
Larry Bird
John Havlicek
Bob Cousy

imo this cant be topped but maybe i am biased.

also for your lakers teams i would definetly put wilt over shaq. wilt was far better, infact, kareem was better also. both would go ahead of him.

anyway, its probably good that the celts have not had many great players latly, cause if they did thier numbers would probably get retired. if that happens soon there wont be any numbers left to wear in boston. lol they already got 21 numbers retired with a 22nd player "Jim Loscutoff " also hanging in the rafters(didnt want number retired)

If I were the coach of the all-time Lakers team, I'd be so tempted to have a front court of:

C: Shaq
PF: Wilt
SF: Kareem

I know as far as outside shooting goes and whatever it wouldn't work, just because they're all post players but fuckin hell that'd scare the shit outta alot of teams.

Don't forget Eddie Jones, he was pretty good when he played for the lakers.

As for the nets: Mutombo and Mourning in their prime.

i maybe biased but i think Lakers definitely have the best team if we put players that play in its team.

but i also like that if there would be the next or runner it would be the celtics. just looking at his history and you would both lakers and celtics (and knicks) have the best history of the game.

Bill Russell
Kevin Mchale
Larry Bird
John Havlicek
Bob Cousy

add to the list
Parish
Walton
Pierce
A. Walker
Payton
Ainge

but again nobody can beat the lakers

heres the Lakers
C Wilt, Abdul Jabbar, Divac
PF Shaq, Mikan, Rodman
SF Worthy. Malone , Cooper
SG West, Bryant, Scott
PG Magic Johnson, Payton

you can create another team and composed of jones, van exel and other.
play this 2nd team against some all-time XXXX team and we'll have a chance to win.

As a Chicago Bulls fan, I'm quite honestly offended that you put consider putting Brand, Hinrich, or Rodman on the Bulls "All-Time" team.

As a Chicago Bulls fan, I'm quite honestly offended that you put consider putting Brand, Hinrich, or Rodman on the Bulls "All-Time" team. All-Time implies they played an integral role on the team for years and years, not 1 or 2 like Hinrich (Who may eventually make the All-Time roster), or Brand, who shouldn't even be considered. Rodman, as good as he was for his 3 seasons still did not spend enough time in Chicago to merit a selection on the team. You've also left out several key players from, you know, decades other than the 90's...

I propose to you...

PG - Norm Van Lier (With the Bulls from 1971-78, averaging 12.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 6.9 assists).
SG - Michael Jordan
SF - Scottie Pippen
PF - Bob Love (With the Bulls from 1968-76, averaging 21.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.7 assists).
C - Artis Gilmore (With the Bulls from 1976-82, 1986, averaging 22.9 points, 13.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists, 2.21 blocks with .559 field goal percentage).

Let us also not forget Reggie Theus (With the Bulls 1978-84, averaging 18.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.6 assists), Chet Walker (With the Bulls 1969-75, averaging 21.5 points and 7.7 rebounds, and 2.5 assists), or current coach Jerry Sloan (With the Bulls 1966-76, averaging 14.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists).

agreed. stormin norman! i'd also consider ho grant and sloan. the all time team on nba.com/bulls is perrrty good

2 things here. i think you only should be able to add players to a team if the player was good for that team. i mean can washington really claim jordan? can the bulls claim parish? toronto should not be able to claim hakeem. you see my point? someone mentioned payton on boston, that makes no sense, he might not even play for them.

also let me quote

"boston

pg - dennis johnson
sg - paul pierce
sf - larry bird
pf - kevin mchale
c - bill russell "

putting dennis johnson over bob cousey is down right insulting. same with pierce over a host of others. the celts go far to many numbers hanging in the fleet center to put pierce on this list. he earns back up status in my book.

anyway i think a celtics vs lakers all time at thier prime matchup would be so fun to watch. i dont think anyone could argue that. the starting matchups would be to die for. i notice everyone is putting kobe on the lakers, is he enough of a team player to make the lakers a winner? wilt was not much of a team player but later in his career when everyone called him a hog he tried to prove them wrong by actually not shooting enough.

personally i could see this matchup go either way any given game. i think the celtics are winners in 2 positions and the lakers are winners in 2 positions with the center spot beign a draw imo. the lakers got the 2 better guards while the celts got the 2 better forwards.

just a couple more changes i would make. for houston i would put ralpha sampson over yao any day. tom chambers belongs on the suns roster, far ahead of amare. henrich dont deserve to have his name next to paxons.

as for the clippers one, danny manning was pretty good for them back in his younger years.

whats w/ the insulting comment? am i really hurting your feelings just because my opinion differs from yours? this is just for fun, it's not like anyones making an **OFFICIAL** all-time bulls/celtics/lakers/ team here. point is i like some players more than others and you probably like other players over my favorites, but you don't see me calling that as an 'insult'. [/quote]

its VCFAN thread so we just follow it so if you really want an ALL-TIME ***** Team then create a new thread with that purpose.

also if you see i add payton to boston well there an emoticons right there.

and for the Lakers composed of George
