Wolves courting Malone

CHARLEY WALTERS

The Timberwolves this week are making a serious effort to sign free-agent power forward Karl Malone.

The Wolves plan to have the NBA's most valuable player, Kevin Garnett, fly to Los Angeles with coach Flip Saunders to try to persuade the 6-foot-9, 259-pound future hall of famer and two-time MVP to sign with Minnesota.

The San Antonio Spurs are considered the Wolves' top competition for Malone, who's still seeking an NBA championship ring after 19 seasons.

Looks like KG has to convince Mailman to land in T-Wolves. Basically , it would be a great add to the roster, considering Mailman is most definetly in his last season, and he doesn`t have a ring, also KG hasn`t got one yet, but i doubt he`ll get much playing time for Minnesota. I think Timberwolves still would put KG to play PF over Karl, cause i don`t think KG is going to play the SF for the whole season.

I hate Karl Malone but anything to help us win. He wouldn't start but he would get lots of time. Mailman/Madsen PF rotation behind KG would be good and Madsen can play center at times too (when Kandi is being retarded).

Overall, if the Wolves can get him go for it but otherwise I wouldn't be upset if he doesn't.

If it's about game time... choose Shaq or Kobe's teams.
If it's about the ring choose Spurs or Minny... I admit Kobe cannot promise a ring to Malone.

Oh yeah... if Malone is true to his word he'll choose either Shaq or Kobe because he made it public that he likes both of them.

He's also made it clear that he has no intention of returning to the Lakers. He wanted to go to Miami to be with Shaq the whole time. Although the article was on NBA.com and is gone now because it is pretty old, I'm absolutley positive he would pick Shaq over Kobe, Malone always says that Shaq is like a little brother to him (despite bing 50 pounds heavier and 4 inches taller .). I will try to go back and find that article but he has made it clear that Miami is the team he would want to sign woth.

two words: politically correct.

karl went to la for one reason, wait, maybe two: shaq and a championship. karl will not go back to la because, frankly, that place is a cesspool, there is nothing there, and the management'd probably trade him for popeye jones if he resigned anyway. i think theres only 3 real choices: miami, san antonio, and maybe minny. frontrunner miami.

I wonder if he'd truly be happy coming off the bench in Minnesota. Obviously he's driven by the desire to win a championship and he's shown that he's willing to make sacrifices to achieve that goal, but I know he's said in the past he didn't want to become one of those veterans who played on past their prime, wasting away on the bench. On the other hand, he seemed to have relaxed his stance when he was looking to leave Utah last year.

I feel he would have a larger impact in Miami or LA...honestly, he looked burnt out to me last year.

Shaq wont deliver Mailman to Miami

Thats good news for me as a Lakers fan that his kids will go to a school in Los Angeles, which means that he will play somewhere in that area, most likely the Lakers. He can make a big difference (Y)

he wont win a ring if he stays with the lakers so i vote he forgets them. now if he dont want to jump on a team to try and win a cheap ring then i think he should sign with a crap team, ball hog like crazy, and go for the all time scoreing record.

I don't think he comes to minnesota, Star Tribune reports saying the rumor is false and our other newspaper, Pioneer Press reports that KG and Flip are talking to Malone.

Both these newspapers are reporting different things. Star Tribune is more respected and more believable newspaper.

- I think it's a bit unfair to speculate that if Karl goes to a contender and wins he'd be acquiring a "cheap ring". After 19 seasons of excellence he deserves to do whatever it takes to get that championship.

- I really don't think that the scoring record is foremost in Karl's mind what-so-ever.

Andrew, The mailman would never come off the bench. The beauty of it is that KG can play all 5 positions. They would slide him to the SF and play a dual PF set up. At least that is the way I see it.

Wolves are trying to get Jon Barry. Jon barry wants a reported 2 year deal when the Wolves only want to offer 1.

The Timberwolves are waiting for free agent Karl Malone to tell them whether he intends to play another season. If so, they plan to fly to Los Angeles to recruit him. Taylor probably would be part of the group that would include Kevin Garnett and coach Flip Saunders.

"I just think it's the right thing to do to meet with the person and let him look in your eyes and then tell him how we would utilize him," Taylor said. "When we talked to Karl on the phone, he said, 'Just be patient. I want to make sure my knee is really strong and that I'm really committed.' My sense is that he's very willing to meet with us. It would seem to me to make sense, when that happens, to utilize K.G. (Garnett) as part of that."

The 6-foot-9, 259-pound Malone, 41, a two-time NBA most valuable player, has a farm in Arkansas and has kept his children in school in Los Angeles this year.

"To me, we would want to utilize his leadership skills as well as his experience and great ability," Taylor said. "It's more than just that he can make a basket; he's a great leader."

The Timberwolves had to pay a $17 million luxury tax last season because of their high-priced talent and could end up paying that much again this season. Malone, still seeking his first NBA championship ring after 19 seasons, would have to agree to play this season for the $1.1 million veteran's minimum, the same as he received last season from the Los Angeles Lakers

ok i see it like this, if he goes to a team and actually is a big part in them winning the title, then its not a cheap ring. if he signs with the wolves or the pistons(example only know its not gonna happen) and sits the bench just to bag a ring its a cheap one imo. barkley tried to go to houston just to win a easy ring near the end of his career but it turned out it was not so easy afterall. barkley and malone both deserve a ring, but i rather see them win it because they are the man, not just tagging along on someone elses trip.

i dont understand how someone can say so and so "deserves" something. If he "deserved" it he would've gotten it. Barkley and Malone are good players, they didnt and never will win as the main man on their teams. Their are excuses, sure, but forgive me if I'm a bit weary of them, because anyone can make them, some more so than others, but in the end they're the same monster. I might get my head bitten off for this, but what the hell, its my opinion, I don't consider either among the TRUE greats of basketball reserved for the likes of wilt, russel, mj, magic, bird. Maybe a level or two below, but not on that level. Anyway, on a sidenote, I think at the end of this era, shaq, kg, and td may join the top ranks. Also, i know a lot of people like karl and charles, and disagree with me, please dont attack me like idiots, because i wont care and you'll just be wasting your time, if you disagree, use your brain and type. thanks.

both are hall of famers but i agree that neither are among the legends of the nba. do they compare to jordan bird or magic? not in my book. are they hall of famers? easy. where i disagree with you is, i dont think shaq,kg, or duncan belong in thier ranks either. they might belong in the ranks just under these 3 but i dont see anyone in the nba right now that can break these 3. as far as the rank right below them, wilt, russel, so on. i can see them maybe breaking into here.

yeah, i was kind of tentative when naming those three, because they really didnt change/impact the game tremendously as did the others, but who knows? A lot of times people only become "legendary" after their careers are over and all is said and done, as time passes so does the mystique.

I do believe that at the very least, shaq and duncan, by the end of their careers, should definetely rank above barkley and malone, thus pushing those two into maybe the third or fourth levels of "greatness" :D

Shaq is the most dominate player in recent history. KG went from high school to the pro's when it wasn't common. Now it's almost a given that someone will.

Duncan is Duncan. Great. Superb. Excellent.

i definetly agree magius, shaq imo will easily out rank both barkley and malone. well ok easily barkley, malone was better than barkley imo. gotta have respect for barkley though, doing what he did while on standing 6'4"? thats pretty amazing. i think when all has been said and done all 3 you named will rank above barkley and malone, if not only cause they didnt win a ring and 2 of these 3 did, though i believe kg will get one.

KG can certainly play at small forward allowing the Mailman to start, but I don't think it's a given that he would start should he go to Minnesota. Depending on his health, he might be more effective in spurts and as such, might be forced to come off the bench at least some of the time.
