Mt Mutumbo to the Rockets agreed in principle

Postby SkipToMy_Lou on Sun Sep 05, 2004 11:35 am

Bulls will waive Adrian Griffin after the trade is complete and sign Mike Wilks to a 3 year deal.

Dikembe Mutombo will get his wish of playing for the Houston Rockets next season, and the Bulls will get a tall shooting guard when an anticipated trade between the teams becomes official early next week, according to league sources.

The Bulls will receive 6-6 Eric Piatkowski, who has shot 40 percent from three-point range throughout his 10-year career, as well as defense-minded swingman Adrian Griffin and guard Mike Wilks.

The Bulls will look to Piatkowski, 33, to fill some of the scoring void created by the trade of Jamal Crawford. He played his first nine seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers and was lost in the shuffle in Houston after missing time with a sprained left ankle to start the season. He played in just 49 games and averaged 4.1 points. His three-point percentage ranks 22nd in NBA history.

Mutombo was acquired from the New York Knicks in the Crawford deal, but he didn't want to play for the Bulls, preferring to become Yao Ming's backup on a playoff-ready team.

good for Pike... more minutes! lol

And good for Mutombo and Yao. Yao can have a break while Mutombo goes in to play D... and T-mac will benefit from a defensive center and a more energised Yao!

That's not too bad I guess. I don't think having Mutombo play 10 minutes a game while "mentoring" Eddy Curry would have been the solution, perhaps Pike can play a role similar to Fred Hoiberg in Minnesota. Wilks should be fine as a third-string backup at point guard. Mutombo has enough left in the tank to be a solid backup when Yao needs a rest and also form a twin towers combination every now and again.

I think they gave up a little too much for Mutumbo. Piatkowski could really help a team who sometimes has those 'cold' nights even with some really good 3-point shooters. But I guess Mutumbo could really add some shot-blocking to a team that really needs it.

It's not just shotblocking. The Rockets need a backup center bad. Taylor and Howard won't cut it. That's hilarious. One is a bit lazy, the other is really lazy. One is short, the other plays no defense. Weatherspoon won't cut it either. They don't really need Pike or Griffin...with Nachbar and Padgett already there. They have enough shooters...but anyways, I cannot believe Bulls are cutting Griffin :?. I think he would do a more than decent job filling their role of a player who can guard the big 2.

Wilks vs Duhon vs Pargo...hmm...

Agreed. Unless I've missed a signing somewhere, apart from Yao Mutombo is the only other true centre on Houston's roster.

they did give up too much for him, but there's not many true centers left in the league... and trading cato left a huge hole in the middle

I would like to see Yao and Deke on the floor together...
forget Duncan and Robinson (the twin towers), here comes the great wall

Let's not forget the Bulls didn't have a guard over 6'3 on the roster before this trade. They really were in need of a (backup) SG.

Trade what for Rahim? I don't think Portland would accept anything Houston has to offer. They don't need another 20 & 10 guy, they just need a guy that can hit his shots & grab a few boards. Yao & McGrady should be the focal points of the team, bringing in Shareef wouldn't add to the mix. It could destroy it.

crap for crap imo

mutombo will be a backup but he's still 50 or something and it's no mystery as to why he's been a trade whore these past few yrs

pike's attitude is perfect for this team- he's been on losing teams for almost his entire career and i haven't heard one single peep out of him complaining about it
