white players

Postby Amphatoast on Tue Aug 17, 2004 6:13 pm

who do you guys think are the top 5 white nba players of all time?
for me I think its
1. Larry Bird
2. Jerry West
3. John Stockton
4. Rick barry?
5. Jason Kidd?

I don't know many famous whites in history so this is a bit tough :(

while we on this topic, can you think of a all white starting line up?

It's difficult to pick just five: George Mikan, Bob Cousy, John Havlicek, Rick Barry, Pete Maravich, Dave Cowens, Larry Bird, John Stockton are all names that come to mind.

C: Mikan
F: Bird
F: Havlicek
G: Cousy
G: Stockton

I'd put Stockton at 3, and go with Andrew's list.

Mikan probably should be a bit lower if you look at abilities, but he was such a revolution in his day, I think he deserves the #1

I'd take Bird over mikan anyday. My list:
1. Bird
2. Stockton
3. West
4. rick barry
5. Mikan

I would too. I was just naming them in chronological order (or close enough). Having said that, Mikan is probably a little underrated these days as a result of having played in the pre-shot clock era.

Mikan played in the pre-electricity era

Kevin McHale might be another name that deserves mention.

McHale deserves mention, but he's certainly not top 5.

People seem to forget how dominating and game changing Mikan actually was. Even with glasses.

He was, didn't they originally widen the lane for him? He was great for his era that's for sure...

They did indeed. I believe he won six titles in seven years (five in the BAA/NBA, one in the now defunct NBL with the Chicago American Gears).

Kevin McHale! I knew I left someone out when I was rattling off names in my earlier post.

i gotta go with

1.Bird(no doubt here)
2.Stockton(still say the best true point guard ever)
3.Mchale(guy was crazy in the post)
4.Mikan(Changed the game)
5.Cousy(same as above)

a few notes, maravich was insanly good in college and still damn good in the pros but i think counting just his nba career he is not top 5. petrovic was on his way to maybe being top 10, not sure if i would give him top 5 but he was definetly going for top 10. its to bad what happened with him. just thought he deserved a mention.

one more mention, bill walton. if injuries did not haunt him like they did he was a guarenteed top 5. he was incredible. the guy would rebound the ball and throw the outlet before even landing. sad to see such a good player have a shortened career due to injures(bo jackson anyone?)
