The NBA Power Rankings

Postby EGarrett on Mon Jul 19, 2004 12:01 am

Of course the offseason is still in full swing, but with so many teams making big moves, I feel like posting a top 10 at the moment just to help hash things out.

Here's how it looks to me:

1. Detroit
2. San Antonio
3. Minnesota
4. Houston
5. Sacramento
6. Denver
7. Dallas
8. Indiana
9. Phoenix
10. Miami

Detroit won the title obviously and will be better next year with the addition of McDyess, a better Darko (in theory) and Carlos Delfino. San Antonio improved by adding Brent Barry after winning the title two years ago and contending last season.

Minnesota and Sacramento are aging. Houston's twosome of Yao and McGrady is sensational, and they have help with Juwan Howard (17 and 7) and some shooters like Piatkowski.

Denver's addition of Martin for basically nothing is a huge step-up. They could easily crack the top 5. Dallas lost Steve Nash and Antawn Jamison and didn't get much in return.

Indiana got worse by trading Al Harrington. Phoenix is a contender now with 3 potential All-Stars and plenty of young depth. And Miami has the Daddy, to go with Wade and Jones.

Mine:

1. San Antonio
2. Detroit
3. Minnesota
4. Houston
5. Miami
6. Sacramento
7. Dallas
8. Indiana
9. Memphis
10. Denver

I'm surprised you gave Memphis no credit at all, they've got a good nucleus, I would expect them to better what they did last year with the same core of guys + last years head coach of the year. (Y)

Yea that's true...I don't even see why people ranking Houston so high and they still don't have a PG. Houston has no depth at all, so don't expect them to do a whole lot this season IMO.

1. Detroit
2. Spurs
3. Twolves
4. Indiana
5. Miami
6. Nuggets
7. Kings
8. Grizzlies
9. Rockets
10. Mavs (Lost thier PG and hasn't made any other moves)
11. Jazz

He won't "fill Nash's shoes" his first year, it's not about the talent, but the experience, and Nash is about 10 times a better shooter even though Harris is a good shooter.

Pheonix is a contender? Please.. they are worse than they were two years ago. Amare is good, Marion is an allstar, Nash is on a decline and joe johnson is just above average.. how can you rate them 10th! They have nothing legitimate in the halfcourt game..

New jersey were the biggest off season losers. Kmart is gone, Kidd wants out.. this to a team already on a decline. Lucky I don't like them or i'd be pissed

Me and Nick are the two biggest Suns fans here at the NLSC so i hope this doesn't sound biased. The Suns are not 9 right now, if the Clips don't match the Richardson offer and they trade Q or marion for a legitimate big man (Dampier would be ideal, but that's optimistic) then they're 9. Right now however they are still a good team (I put them at 13) without a big man.

My list.
1. Detroit (defence, defence, defence, Sheed is back)
2. San Antonio (addition of Barry gives a veteran guard to tutor Manu and TP)
3. Indiana (added Jackson for the price of a disgruntled Harrington, and had the best record last year)
4. Minnesota (Cassell and Spree are another year older, but Hudson should help)
5. Miami (SHAQ!!! And Dwyane Wade can only get better, unless he goes the way of Caron)
6. Houston (Top guard and top center is great, even without a steady pg)
7. Sacremento (Their time is over, they couldn't get over the L.A. hump)
8. Denver (Addition of K-Mart to an already strong frontcourt is huge in the West)
9. Dallas (If they get good play from the pg position or deal 'toine they'll do well)
10. New Orleans (If the duct tape holding Mash together holds they could be dangerous, Magloire and Brown help in the move west)
11. Memphis (Hubie is doing an excellent job, and the young'n's have even more experience)
12. Lakers (The loss of Shaq is huge, and if Kobe shoots less than 22 shots a game they'll be fine)
13. Suns/Blazers (This is a toss-up, Suns have a veteran leader, Blazers have a strong front line and a new and improved DMiles)

True, but with Yao and McGrady, people are in the mindset that this is going to be another "Shaq and Kobe" duo where the Lakers didn't really have that much depth or a good PG either.

1. Detroit - native detroiter ;) not to mention that we are the defending champs
2. Minnesota - Was number one in the western conference last year, and team hasnt changed.
3. San Antonio - adding barry will add some outside shooting, but with shaq out the west, duncan can have more fun in the paint.
4. Indiana - the Al Harrington trade may or may not help.... thats up in the air.
5. Sacramento - losing Vlade may cause some mental issues with the team as he was reguarded as the mental glue for Sac town.
6. Houston - T-Mac + Yao (MIGHT) = the next shaq and kobe minus ego issues. not to mention that the supporting cast is better than shaq and kobe had, except with GP/Mailman and when fox was healthy and Rice and Horry were on and poppin
7. Denver - Give em a few years to mature and they'll make a serious run, i mean jeeze: Mello, Miller, Camby, and Martin  just needs time.
8. Memphis - Cant rule out the grizz. J-Dubb is still growing, so is Gasol and crew
9. Miami - The Diesel + The REAL rookie of the year? need i say more. o yeah that jones guy that was also bumped out by kobe is there too.
10. Dallas - Lost Nash, but dont forget about the rookie, and last year's surprise youngsters. and if stackhouse can accept a role he COULD play the 3 spot and have Finley play the 2. that could be pretty powerful.

1. Spurs - Tony Parker will be better and the team will be better as a group

2. Indiana - They signed Stephen Jackson and he will be a big boost for them. He might be what they needed to get to the finals.

3. Lakers - They are the underdogs this year. They will not procrastinate this time. Shaq is gone, but in return, they get some much needed depth that was missing in the finals. Lamar Odom is versatile and he can become a great PF. Grant will play center (or Vlade if they sign him) and Butler at SF. And then of course, they have Kobe. But this time, they have four players that can create their own shot (including GP who will be playing under a new system).

4. Miami - They will probably not win the title, but they have a legit chance of getting to the finals.

5. T-Wolves - It's still not their year yet. They will be contenders, but I don't see them getting to the finals.

6. Detroit - Same team as last year (maybe plus McDyess) and maybe another trip to the finals?

7. Sacramento - Internal conflicts with Chris Webber. They will have 50+ wins like always, but they will choke again in the playoffs.

8. Denver - Addition of Kenyon Martin bring them up here. They have a legit chance of getting out of the first round this time. But they could once again be the T-Wolves of previous years if they can't get out of the first round next year.

9. Houston - McGrady and Yao.

10. Utah - They actually have a potential all star in Boozer now. And that means that they will probably make the playoffs.

Yeah I really think LA's at 3, because they actually have depth this time. A lot of people are saying that they won't even make the playoffs. But you have to remember, we got something in return for Shaq. This is a different team and me putting them at 3 is just a wild guess. But so is putting them at #15. Nobody really knows how good this team is going to be. But you have to remember that they still have 2 HOF's (maybe 3 if Malone returns) and 2 more potential all stars (with a new system under Rudy T). And that's a pretty good team if you ask me.
And yes, I believe that Utah will do better than Dallas. Dallas doesn't have Stevie Nash anymore and he was their clutch player. He was the one that got the team flowing. He was a huge part of their franchise and without him, I just don't see them doing that well.

Oh, and about Detroit, I won't put them at #1 just yet. It's not as easy to win a repeat championship. Just ask the freindly neighborhood Spurs

They also had depth last season... the lakers have gotten worse. Payton no longer has confidence, Malone is history, fox is a nothing and fisher is gone. If Kobes game was "deminshed" becuase he had to play with shaq, imagine how he is going to handle being with odom, or more importantly, how odom will be nothing but a shadow out there. same with butler. Grant is an overpaid rebounder who isnt worth mentioning. Seattle is better than these guys.

Detroit may not win, but right now, they are the best team. They have improved on the championship team. Utah will be a decent defensive team, but dont be fooled. Okur and Boozer arent godsent. Boozers game was helped by lebron alot, and okur, well, he is the cheap mans version of raef lafrentz. Dallas still has dirk, finely, stackhouse and walker. i wouldnt be suprised to see walker at pg this season. They are better than utah.

Are we talking about the regular season or overall???

Even as a Detroit fan I'll place them at #2 behind San Antonio. Both teams have improved though quite well. Eager to see what the ROCKETS will be like. Make no mistake, this is Yao's team. Once that guy learns to hog the ball all hell will break loose!!!!

1- Detroit (They added Sheed and McDyness as a replacement for Okur...Delfino is coming to town and Milicic will get PT...Defending Champs just got a whole lot better!)

2- Spurs (They got Brent Barry and got Bruce Bowen back.)

3- Nuggets (How good is this...Camby, Nene, Melo and Martin all in the sam frontcourt? Really good...and they got Martin for free!)

4- Heat (They added Shaquille O'neal who makes them a contender...he IS still the League's MDE....but we will see if age gets in his way...and he also has prodigy Wade by his side- but is reunited with Eddie Jones...)

5- Suns- They added Nash and may add Q...The Suns have a true PG, an all-star 3 and an all-star big man....definately a play-off team!

6- Rockets (Moved trigger-happy Franchise and Cat in return for the number 1a or 1b shooting guard in the NBA...will Yao and T-mac rule the West?)

7- Minnesota...they have been quiet but their trio of KG/Spree and Cassell didn't make the Finals only due to injury. Hopefully Kandi will actually contribute, Wally plays like he did two years ago and Troy Hudson goes crazy...the T-wolves will be no. 1 again! (But I'm not a fan!)

8- Mavs... they dumped Antawn Jamison for Jerry Stackhousse...but lost Nash but then signed Daniels for a multiyear deal...so they are still amongst the League's elite

9- Jazz...they didn't lose any players (I think) and got Okur to be a rebounder next to Kirilenko...these guys narrowly missed the play-offs...they have a chance to make it this year!

10. Indiana...with the addition of Stephen Jackson...the Spurs have a scoring defender type guard who can play small forward or shooting guard and I think he has less of an attitude than Harington....(I think!)....so they are are still amongst the East's top three teams

11- Lakers...we got depth! Butler and Odom will help Kobe and Payton will get to play his way cause Rudy T said he wanted Payton to play like he used to...it's back to Showtime Basketball in LA...If Kobe isn't convicted- watch the Lakers to make a run at the title as 'underdogs' but that's only if we get a center! (MORE HYPE: HOPEFULLY WE GET ANDREW BOGUT WITH MIAMI'S PICK!!!!)

12- Memphis...back with the same team but only more experienced after their stint in the playoffs!

13- Portland...They drafted a much needed PG in Telfair but will he abuse his coach's and gm's trust by throwing too many flashy TO's??

14- Sac-town...missed Shaq and lost Vlade...but Peja and Miller and Webber and Bibby and etc. will all come back to try and play together...

15- Orlando...They got Francis and Cat and a needed big man in Cato. They got Dwight Howard (The next KG?) and Jameer Nelson (A good PG) and a hopefully rejuvenated Grant Hill...a playoff team in the East? I think so!

...TO BE CONTINUED (PLEASE POST OPINIONS ON THIS!)

i think you have Denver too high. They should be, say 4th in the West, behind SAS, Minny and Sac. I know KMart really helps them out, but i feel that Minny and Sac are still better, and maybe even Houston

Suns @5 seems kind of generous, I mean they didn't make the playoffs last year and some teams you listed below them have upgraded

and Indiana @10 seems like a crime, i would have them top 6 no doubt. After last seasons 61 (?) season they added a piece in Jackson that gives them an upgrade
