Mid-Season Awards.

Alritey then guys, it's almost midway through the season, let's do what we do best, use our imagination to hand out some awards. If the season were to end this today, who would get what?

My awards:

MVP: The nominees: Baron Davis, New Orleans; Tim Duncan, San Antonio; Kevin Garnett, Minnesota; Jermaine O'Neal, Indiana; Peja Stojakovic, Sacramento.

My Winner: Baron Davis, without him, the Hornets would be struggling to reach .500, Timberwolves coulds survive without KG. MVP for the team is Davis. MVP stats wise has to be KG.

MIP: Randolph is my pick, I doubt many would beg to differ from opinion.

Coach of the year: Bzdelik or Hubie Brown, both winning records in the strong West.

Rookie of the year: King James. (Y)

Defensive player of the year: Ron Artest.

Gimme yours guys.

Nice thread man (y)
MVP: I'd go with Jermaine. He has carried Indy in a similar way that Baron Davis has carried the hornets, but they do have a better record, and im not convinced that indy has that much of a better roster than new orleans when you take away O'neal and Davis from their respective teams. But really, and of those guys you listed as candidates are legitimate mvp's.

MIP: At the start of the season I wouldve said baron, because of the way he was playing was so much higher than the year before, but ill agree here, its zach. Lamar Odom deserves some credit here too tho..

Coach of the year: I think terry porter. Look at how bad their roster is, and he's got everyone to contribute and play hard. The only advantage he has over jerry sloan is milwalkee is in playoff positioning.

ROY: Lebron- living upto the hype and then some. Imagine in cleveland does in fact sneak into the playoffs with James posting these numbers... forget roy, he should get some votes for mvp if the cavs do make the post season.

DPOY: Artest as well, with KG second. These guys can shut a guy down one on one, with a small advantage to Ron Ron.... I can artest to that! :proud:

I would like to know why you chose Dampier ahead of Randolph please?

Radolph's stats improved much more compared to Erick Dampier's stat's from last season.

A little comparison:

Randolph last season:

PPG: 8.4
RPG: 4.5
APG: 0.5

Dampier last season:

PPG: 8.2
RPG: 6.6
APG: 0.7

Randolph this season:

PPG: 21.4
RPG: 11.1
APG: 2.3

Dampier this season:

PPG: 11.9
RPG: 11.6
APG: 0.7

Randolph has improved his stats dramatically, where as Dampier just upped his rebounding, Randolph improved in every category, the same cannot be said for Dampier, wouldn't this mean, that Randolph is the most improved (between him and Dampier) player?

I'm not attacking anyone btw.

mvp: KG. because he still puts up the same numbers even with cassell and spree on his team and he is playin better ball than duncan

mip: It has to be Randolph mainly because he improved his ppg by 10 pts and he is just playing like a star.

coach: Hubie Brown because he led this young team into the season and got them the 6th spot in the Western Conference and the West is alot tougher than the East thats why a Western team should get it. Mainly it should be Hubie because of the way he teaches the game and he also turned one of the most flashiest PG's in the league to one of the most all-around PG in the league in JWill.

roy: Carmelo mainly because his team has a better record and he is also in the West.

dpoy: Ron Artest because basically he didnt lose his temper all thru the mid-season and still managed to play good D.

MVP: Garnett, he's jsut so damn good.
Most improved: Randolf, 2nd would be Joe Johnson (not many realize how good he's been), 3rd Jiri Welsch (eh some1 from boston has to be mentioned)
Coach of the year: Hubbie Brown or Bzdelik
ROY: A few weeks ago it woulda been melo because his team was winning and brons wasnt. but all of a sudden cleveland has playoff hopes, if bron could get them into the playoffs that would be quite amazing.

the selection process for mip is similar to mvp in that there could be two ways of picking one.

for mip- you chose to pick the player who had the biggest statistical increase from last year. i made my choice based on a player who had a big improvement in relatively the same amount of minutes.

is randolph truly the nba's most improved player? i would say he's having a breakout year, but he's not the nba's most improved player. you could say zach's had the talent all along and just needed the minutes.

on the other hand, there are players like dampier. he's been a starter for most of his career but has played like a chump. but this year he's turned into a double double monster and has been one of the players GS that has kept them respectable despite all their injuries

is one way right and the other wrong? to each his own. but i do think choosing a player like dampier is a more accurate choice for MIP

I agree with crawford4MIP, the MIP award should definetly be awarded to the player with the biggest increase in stats... in the same amount of minutes from last year... which is why Randolph should not win it.

As a Randolph fan, you can take this as an un-biased opinion. ;)

But golly! Joe Johnson's making a statement isn't he! :o his stats have increased from 12 ppg to 16 ppg since the marbury trade... Joey's in for a strong chance at MIP now... 4 weeks ago i wouldn't have said so though.

MIP:Randolph straight up
D-Player:Ron Artest...i think Ben Wallace is not having that good of a year defensively....
Rookie:King James
Coach:Hubie Brown i just wish he could come to that team 5 years ago..then there might be hope for Vancouver Grizzles

MVP: as of now, it's KG. always an MVP candidate every year. baron's launching 3's like antoine walker clone. Duncan had a sluggish start, but he's picking it up lately. but I'll give it to KG for now. we'll see who truly is the mvp at the end of the season

MIP: boozer is having a heckuva season as well. solid double double guy. im not choosing randolph because, like crawford4mvp said, he had the talent. he just didnt get the minutes. kinda like tmac, when he got traded to magic, his stats went KABOOM.

DPY: ron artest

Rookie: although LJ is putting up a slightly better numbers than melo, melo probably is gonna win the award. kinda like last year, when yao had a slight better stats than amare but amare's team made the playoffs. winning DOES matter in awards.

COY: terry porter. pretty darn good for a rookie coach. again, history repeats itself. doc won his COY in his rookie season, and now so will terry porter.

MVP: So far, Garnett. He's been the most consistent for the first half. Even if TD out-performs him in the second half, I'd be surprised if he were to get three-in-a-row at the end of the year.

ROY: Lebron, and I'd be really surprised if he doesn't win it at the end too. Regardless of team record, if LJ's Cavs can grab hold of a playoff spot by April, I'd say he's a lock. Melo's impressed me a ton, but he hasn't done anything phenomenal like I've seen LJ do.

DPOY: Artest. I'm getting tired of all these big men winning the DPOY award. Often times, the defensive ballhawks on the perimiter are unappreciated. Big Ben doesn't even lead the league in blocks this year, so Artest better get this one.

MIP: I too agree with Limp, in that this award should go to the player who's actually improved by getting better and not getting more minutes. At first I was gonna give it to Marcus Camby, but he hasn't really improved, just overcome an injury, so I'll have to say Dampier. I don't think he'll get it at the end of the year, which is pretty bad in my opinion, but he deserves it.

COY: Terry Porter. I laughed when I looked at their roster. I stopped laughing when I looked at their record.

Sixth Man: Jamison is better than Josh Howard, but I like how Nelli brings him off the bench to provide an offensive spark. It's between Ricky Davis and Jamison in my mind, but I'm gonna have to go with Jamison since his team's better and his stats are better too.

I dont usually do this, but im changing my mip to eric dampier as well. After reading limp's reasoning, its convinced me that he is the mip, and not zach. Good stuuf limp :)

and my sixth man of the year is antawn jamison... but penny could overtake him if he plays good in nyk

Front-runner
Garnett is clear-cut favorite for MVP honors at midseason
Posted: Tuesday February 3, 2004 4:56PM; Updated: Tuesday February 3, 2004 4:56PM

With the NBA All-Star Game almost upon us, it's a good time to take a break and size up the league at the midway point. While no team has emerged as a clear-cut favorite so far, such is not the case with the MVP. It's Kevin Garnett, hands-down.

Garnett leads the NBA in rebounding (14.0) and is fourth in scoring (24.5). He's dishing out 5.2 assists, remarkable for a big man. He's one of the best defensive players in the league (2.26 blocks, 9th overall in the NBA). He shoots a high percentage (49.4 percent, 12th in the NBA).

Long one of the game's best players, Garnett this year has been even better. No other player this season, including Tim Duncan, Jermaine O'Neal or Peja Stojakovic, has done more at both ends. Duncan comes closest, but his slow start and wretched foul shooting have put him behind Garnett -- at least for now.

Garnett's leadership, too, has been off the charts. Yes, he's been helped greatly by the arrivals of Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell. But he's still the only real big man on his team, sharing the frontcourt with the likes of Mark Madsen and Oliver Miller. Most important, he has led the T'wolves to within a whisker of the NBA's best record.

After seven consecutive first-round playoff exits, Garnett seems like a man on a mission. Always a fierce competitor, he has turned it up even another notch. It probably didn't hurt that he rested this summer instead of playing in the Olympic qualifying.

Whatever the reasons, Garnett has set the standard. He never seems to get tired or miss a game to injury. He comes to play every night. He crashes the boards despite often having to play out on the perimeter. He sets picks and finds teammates for open passes. His all-around efforts make him an easy choice for midseason MVP.

Rookie: LeBron James, Cavs

Despite unprecedented expectations, James has more than lived up to the hype. He is averaging 20 points, six rebounds, six assists and 1.5 steals while leading the Cavs into the playoff chase in the East. Confident and poised, James has the look of a 10-year veteran. He has won the respect of coaches and opponents, and he's already made Cleveland his team. A special player. Denver's Carmelo Anthony has been great, too, but not like James.

Coach: Jerry Sloan, Jazz

Without John Stockton and Karl Malone, the Jazz were picked by many to finish dead last in the NBA. Then they lost free agent Keon Clark to injury. Their rotation consists of no-names like Carlos Arroyo, DeShawn Stevenson, Raja Bell and Greg Ostertag. But Sloan somehow has them playing .500 ball in the tough Western Conference. Denver's Jeff Bzdelik and Milwaukee's Terry Porter also deserve kudos, but the Nuggets have more talent while the Bucks play in the weaker East.

Sixth Man: Antawn Jamison, Mavs

His numbers are good enough (15.9 points, 6.4 rebounds in 30.1 minutes), but what has set him apart so far is his attitude. A former 20-point scorer in Golden State, Jamison has willingly accepted a bench role in Dallas. As a result, the Mavs have overcome a slow start to get back in the West title chase. Sacramento's Bobby Jackson has been stellar again, as usual, and Indiana's Al Harrington is coming on, but Jamison deserves the nod for now.

Defensive: Ron Artest, Pacers

Isn't it about time a non-big man won this thing again? Artest is a true stopper, a guy who hunkers down and uses superior strength and balance (and yes, volatility) to get in his foe's head and shut him down. He's been a big part of Indiana's rise to the top of the East. Garnett, Duncan, O'Neal and Ben Wallace are all deserving, but they have an advantage with their size. Artest makes just as much impact at 6-foot-7 as those 7-footers.

Most surprising team(s): Jazz, Bucks

Like Utah, Milwaukee was supposed to be rebuilding this year. The George Karl/Big Three Era had been blown up. With a rookie coach (Porter), a rookie point guard (T.J. Ford) and no true center, the Bucks seemed headed to the lottery. Instead, like the Jazz, the Bucks have played unselfish team basketball to stay above the .500 mark all season. Porter has nurtured Ford nicely, while getting the most out of guys like Joe Smith, Brian Skinner, Dan Gadzuric, Damon Jones and Erick Strickland.

Most disappointing team(s): Bulls, Magic

It's hard to believe any team could match Orlando (a 19-game losing streak, despite the presence of Tracy McGrady), but that's how bad Chicago has been this season. After five years of post-dynasty rebuilding, the Bulls were supposed to be a playoff team again. But youngsters Eddy Curry and Jamal Crawford were unable to produce consistently, and Tyson Chandler went down with a back injury. The glory days of Michael Jordan have never seemed so far away in the Windy City.

How can a 31-19 team be disapointing? Orlando is definetly te most disapointing....making the play-offs, only key loss is Darrell Armstrong, but they got good players instead and 1 of them is Juwon Howard, and then turn out to be a 13-41 team

MVP:
KG I see no disputing about this, he's just been amazing, right now I would say he's the best player in the world.

MIP:
Dampier: I'm more inclined to him because his minutes didn't change much but this production increased drastically, especially his rebounding.

Brian Cardinal :much more minutes but he wasn't this good last year, even if he got these minutes wouldn't have same production

Randolph: More minutes, that is all.

Coach:
Terry Porter or Jerry Sloan, Denver and Memphis were predicted to raise their stocks this year, nothing was expected from the Bucks and Utah.

ROY:
Co ROY Lebron and Melo, they should both win it, but I really wanted Dwyane Wade to win. (27 10 and 5 yesterday) Also not obsessed with 3's and he's a point guard shooting 47.2% not taking 3's but 31.0% 3pt. (16.3 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 4.3 apg)

DPOY:
Ben Wallace or Ronny s'all good
CP3 | Brand | Arenas | Calderon
Raptors | Wizards | Clippers
