NEW YORK -- Scott Layden was fired Monday as president of the New York Knicks and Isiah Thomas was hired to replace him, a source told the Associated Press.
The move comes after New York missed the playoffs the past two seasons with a roster largely assembled by Layden. The Knicks are 10-18 this season, and recent speculation centered on coach Don Chaney possibly losing his job.
Instead, the odd man out is Layden, who replaced Ernie Grunfeld in the summer of 1999 after the Knicks were coming off an appearance in the NBA Finals.
The team scheduled an afternoon news conference but would not specify what was being announced. An Eastern Conference official who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed Layden was out and Thomas in.

Vins15...you should edit the subject this post to say that Layden has been fired.
This is one of the most overdue firings ever.
"Merry Christmas...Layden family..."

Hell yeah, this way you'll get ALOT more views and reponses
Btw, if it's so obvious this guy sucks, why did it take so long for him to get fired??

wow weeeeee, amazing. Thank you owner of the Knicks for giving us this early Christmas present. Now, the Knicks future is looking much brighter than it was before with Layden. No more "fire Layden" chants will be going on.

I dont think layden did that bad really. He brought in Mcdyess, and Mutumbo and drafted Frank Williams.. but then again he did fuck up badly with the ewing trade (look at the size of eisley and anderson's contract and you'll agree) and signed Allan Houston to 100 million.. yeah actually.. "nah nah nah, nah nah nah... oh hell yeah... goodbye... nah nah nah..."

he got rid of ewing which was a nono. i don't care how wack ewing was at the time, he still deserved to be a knick after all those years. See, the Pacers respect Reggie Miller by resigning him even though he doesn't do much that often now. You can also add weatherspoon's contract to the list of bad contracts for the Knicks

YES FINALLY !!!
I've been a true Knick fan all my life and this is the best things that will happen this season I think (

hmm, that's not a really good sign)

ITS ABOUT TIME. I GUESS IT TOOK SO LONG TO FIRE HIM BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO SAVE IT FOR XMAS TIME. GETTING ISIAH IS EVEN BETTER. HE IS A PLAYERS KIND OF GUY THAT (hopefully) CAN MAKE GOOD CHANGES TO BETTER THE TEAM.

Didn't Ewing want to be traded for NY's success?I say that Isiah should trade some of those forwards for Pg or Sg.

Ewing never asked to be traded. He was dealt becuase alot of fans felt the knicks were better without him. But look at what NYK got in the long run: Shandon Anderson and Howard Eisley, who arent bad players but thier contracts are huge and makes them virtually impossible to trade.

I don't know if Thomas is too much of an upgrade over Layden...He didn't really get anywhere with Toronto, bankrupted the CBA (and wanted to add 300 teams despite it already swimming in red ink...), underachieved with the Pacers and was a lousy coach...

As a long-time Knicks fan since the days of Clyde, Willis, & Dollar Bill, it's sickening to see what Layden & Dolan have done to this once-proud franchise. I'm happy Layden's gone, but I'm not sure Isaiah will do much better for the reasons Ben stated.
Knicks' problems can be summed up in two words - Jim Dolan. All he thinks about is making the playoffs so he can fill the Garden & jack up ticket prices next season. That's not what the Knicks need. First, Knicks have to get out of this horrible cap situation. Then the team has to be torn apart and rebuilt with high-end draft picks and solid free agents. It'll take several 30-win seasons, but it has to be done. Real Knick fans(not the yuppie posers with their cell phones) want a young team that, over time, will be serious contenders for the next ten years. Look at Rod Thorn has done with New Jersey. We need someone like that over here.
As long as Dolan thinks short-term, Knicks are stuck in mediocrity.

YES! he's gone finally, this is really an early Christmas present, we have gone sick and tired with him. I hope Isiah can fix the team and also trade those "softee" guys that Layden put on our team.

Thomas didnt do too bad of a job in Toronto. Didnt he draft Tmac and stoudamire (who was roy in 96)... I think Isiah knows what he needs to do here, and thats rebuild. It may take along time with the salary cap situation they have.. but like Jeff said, it has to be done. Or they can just trade for Nick Van Exel and hope mcdyess returns to pre injury form

The Rebuilding Starts NOW........

There's a big party in tha house!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is a God after all, Steve will be very happy with this I suppose.

, you were the one giving me the good news!!!
Chaney will be next tho
Regarding Thomas, I know anyone would do a better job than Layden.

yea but those were lottery picks anyways, but he isn't bad
Layden seemed to have a knack for signing undersized power forwards
