Statement from the Jazz

The Utah Jazz have issued the following statement and background information in response to the passing of NBA and Jazz legend Jerry Sloan earlier this morning due to complications from Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia at the age of 78:

From the Utah Jazz:

“Jerry Sloan will always be synonymous with the Utah Jazz. He will forever be a part of the Utah Jazz organization and we join his family, friends and fans in mourning his loss. We are so thankful for what he accomplished here in Utah and the decades of dedication, loyalty and tenacity he brought to our franchise.

“Our Hall of Fame coach for 23 years, Jerry had a tremendous impact on the Jazz franchise as expressed by his banner hanging in the arena rafters. His 1,223 Jazz coaching wins, 20 trips to the NBA Playoffs and two NBA Finals appearances are remarkable achievements. His hard-nosed approach only made him more beloved. Even after his retirement, his presence at Jazz games always brought a roaring response from the crowd.

“Like Stockton and Malone as players, Jerry Sloan epitomized the organization. He will be greatly missed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Tammy, the entire Sloan family and all who knew and loved him.”

I recall posting about him being in poor health a couple of years ago, when I first read it. Still sad news; 2020 has been full of that, so far. In any event, truly a legendary figure in the history of the NBA, a Jazz and Bulls great alike. The mutual loyalty between him and the Jazz is something I find very admirable, especially how quickly the blade falls on coaches when times are tough. Rest in Peace.

RIP Jerry

Tough blue nosed coach and il always remember him getting the Jazz to the finals two straight years and just how good they were in the west.

It is a shame the way he left the team and all the drama with Deron.

The bizarre part about it was that he ended up getting traded anyway.

I think this was the outcome by the owner if memory serves, he spoke out about not wanting to play for Sloan and the Jazz didn't want to pay him so they worked a quicker than you could Porzingis!

Probably the right call on Williams, though it's a shame it led to Sloan not finishing out the season before stepping down.

Yep, they didn't come any tougher than Jerry Sloan.

You had to bring your big-boy pants going up against that Sloan/Van Lier backcourt. Those cats were rough.
