Next phase for Paxson likely wheeling, dealing

could be a sign-up site?

Here are some scenarios:

Toronto: It has been talked about for several weeks. The scoring-challenged Raptors, fearful of burning out Vince Carter as he returns to his form of a few years ago, would add Jalen Rose, Donyell Marshall and a third player, perhaps Marcus Fizer, for Antonio Davis, Jerome Williams and perhaps two other players the Raptors want to deal to get under the luxury tax. Davis and Williams are now, at best, role players. Rose said Friday he was enthused about Skiles and feels like he did when Larry Bird took over as coach of the Pacers and he prospered. "I want to finish my career in Chicago," Rose proclaimed. He might not.

Minnesota: Suddenly the Timberwolves can't score, despite the addition of Latrell Sprewell and Sam Cassell. They are pushing for Jamal Crawford. So perhaps Crawford, Rose and Marshall for Sprewell, Ervin Johnson and Troy Hudson?

New York: The Knicks' desire to trade may have cooled some with some victories, but they're still a question mark to make the playoffs. They still want Crawford, so perhaps a Crawford, Marshall, Fizer and Eddie Robinson deal for Antonio McDyess and Charlie Ward could work.

Orlando: The Magic is sinking fast and needs help. So Rose and Crawford for Grant Hill (Bulls finally get him) and Steven Hunter. Sure, Hill can't play, but his salary comes off the cap two years from his last game and the Magic seems to have given up on DePaul's Hunter, who could be a decent backup.

Miami: The Heat is looking to deal and also likes Crawford because Dwyane Wade is doubtful as a point guard. They don't want Rose, but there's a chance of putting together a multiteam deal in which the Bulls get Eddie Jones and take another long contract, perhaps Jerome Williams from Toronto.

Friday was Step 1. If I were Rose, Crawford, Fizer, Marshall, Robinson or Corie Blount, I'd be renting

According to one league executive, Rasheed Wallace could wind up in Dallas (in a deal involving Antawn Jamison and Michael Finley) or San Antonio (in a deal involving Rasho Nesterovic).

Nets team president Rod Thorn categorically denied an Internet report that claimed the Nets were interested in Laker Devean George for Richard Jefferson.
