Player Coach thing?

can some1 explain to me wht that is? like i hear it alot with Bill Russle and Lenny Wilkens ?
what does it mean ur a coach and a player at the same time? how does it work?

lol, a players coach is a coach the players get on very well with, the players like and trust him

Dave DeBusschere was a 24-year-old player/coach with the Pistons in 1964-65, coached and played for them again in 1965-66 and some in 1966-67. (79-143 record though)

This would be like replacing Doc Rivers with Tracy McGrady.

I don't think it's been done in the NBA for quite some time, though Tree Rollins was a player/assistant coach with the Orlando Magic back in 1995.

Didn't Terry Porter do it recently? Or was it Avery Johnson? I believe one of them was a player/assistant coach.

I remember Avery Johnson playing that sort of role for the Mavericks last year. I'm not too sure if it was official, but he played a lesser role on the court, yet a big coaching, leadership type of role (I think).

I believe that's already been established. :wink:

I'm pretty sure gloveguy is right - Avery Johnson did have a player/assistant coach type role with the Mavericks, though it wasn't an official title. So I guess it has been done recently (though unofficially), but there haven't been any player/head coaches for some time.

Kurt Thomas of the Knicks was an assistant coach with Dallas during the 1997-98 season. But the twist is, he didn't play, he was injuried, so not quite a player coach, but pretty close.

I believe Bill Russell won a championship as a player/coach? PPTT34 can vouch/correct me if I'm wrong. (y)

That is correct!

1967, 1968 and 1969 Bill Russell did this. (Won titles in 68 and 69)
Boston in 1969 finished 4th in the East and won playoff series' vs. Philadelphia (Wilt), New York (Reed) and Los Angeles (West and Baylor), without home court advantage in any series.

Lenny Wilkins coached and played for Seattle from 1969-70 season through 1971-72 (121-125 was his record), strange enough, Bill Russell was just the coach of Seattle from 1973-74 through 1976-77 (162-166 was his record, but managed to take the Sonics to the playoffs twice, winning a series in 1975 over Detroit in the West First Round, Detroit in the West and it was only best-of-three, he won the series 2-1, then got bounced by eventual champ Golden State in next round 4-2, still more oddness, Lenny Wilkins then took over again in 1978, 22 games into the season, then lead them to the Finals, only to be beat by Washington in a close 7 game series, the next year Wilkins, serving only as coach again, won the title in 1979, then coached for around 22 years and never won the title again.)

Wasn't Wilt with the Lakers in '69? I believe that was his first year in Los Angeles.
