An amazing layup by Walter Herrmann

Nifty!

I may be mistaking him for another player (because there were a few of them), but he was oddly overrated in NBA Live 08 PC, and not even in a way that made sense according to his skillset. It goes to show how much of an afterthought that version was. Then again, with a move like that, maybe there were on to something.

Herrmann is a legend in my household. My brother Mark always drafted him, and he was absolutely overrated in the 2Ks on last gen. He was a knockdown shooter from everywhere, fast as hell, and could finish with the best of them.

And yeah, makes you question if the gaming companies knew what they were doing after watching that finish... I wouldnt be surprised if he was overrated in Live 08 as well.

BUT, he was a solid player actually. He won rookie of the month in March of his rookie year and made the all rookie second team, he showed flashes (like that layup) of really good play.

I suppose it comes down to the guesswork that's involved with rookie ratings, and the lack of consistent official roster updates on that generation. If something was wildly wrong, it was seldom fixed. Players like that do become a part of our gaming lore, though. Darius Miles was quite overrated in NBA Live 2003, but it made him fun to play with, and set up a lot of trade possibilities if you picked the Clippers in Franchise mode.

Ha, Miles and Josh Childress in those older games. Both were unstoppable because of quickness, speed, and dunking ability.

Alonzo Gee was unbelievable in NBA 2K11.

Who remembers that this was actually a thing hahaha... just two years ago. This team was so bad and frustrating; Ty Lue was exposed. Horrible coaching.

Throwback to one of the weirdest trios in NBA history:

That trio is a perfect example of a recurring issue during GarPax's tenure in the front office, that being getting big names several years too late. Nevertheless, I'll admit to getting my hopes up a bit, and subsequently being disappointed.

Jimmy became a leader after this tho, Rondo's comments about him hit home on what a leader should be.

It was thrilling when they won those first two games in Boston though.

If only Rondo wasn't injured for rest of the series.

That was the factor that changed it. No Rondo no win.

Watching these classic games from the 70s, 80s, 90s & early 00s on NBA TV is a sad reminder that today's league doesn't measure up. Hate to sound like an old man, but I miss the physicality & intensity from back in the day. Pacers/Bulls ('98 ECF, Game 7), Sixers/Celtics ('81 ECF, Game 7), Knicks/Pacers ('94 ECF, Game 7), Suns/Celtics ('76 Finals, Game 5), Sixers /Raptors ('01 ESF, Game 7), the great Bird/Wilkins duel in the '88 playoffs, Kings/Lakers from '02, Lakers/Pistons ('88 Finals, Game 6 & 7).....that was the NBA at it's finest.

I miss the variety. The downside to focusing on analytics, efficiency numbers, and whatnot, is that teams are trying to play the same way, believing it to be the mathematically proven "correct" way to win. Not only does that philosophy have no safety net for when the threes aren't falling - such as when the Rockets missed 27 of them in a row - it's also most effective with players that not every team has, and can't just acquire. The clash of styles, the different gameplans, is what made older eras exciting as much as anything else. It wasn't an homogenised style of play across the league.
