Ever Heard of Ivan Chiriaev?

Mon Nov 17, 2003 11:01 am

He's one of the top prospects for next year's draft.

http://nbadraft.net/chiriaevstory.asp

A 7-footer with legitimate point guard skills?

Could be very interesting if (a big IF) he develops into a good NBA player. And I think it's pretty safe for me to say this is the first time in history that a Canadian high-school player is being even considered for a lottery pick in the NBA draft.

This brings me to my sentiment that the NBA draft has drastically changed from the past. These days, the most important thing that is looked for in a prospect is what he COULD do in basketball and not what he already CAN do. That's why the top prospects are usually some unknown, young, inexperienced, unproven, enormous size international player (who might not even be a starter in Europe), or some Lebron-esque high school kid. Basically, teams in the NBA are willing to take higher and higher risks to land themselves a project that has the potential to be a great player instead of taking a already proven college standout who is sure to make immediate impact but may never be a top player in the league.

While this does make for some interesting draft choices and some of them may develop into players worth watching but I think it also leads to some career benchwarmers who couldn't live up to their hype. And because of those not-so-great great prospects, the overlooked players who had worked to prove themselves at a high level will never be able to play in the league, where they could have had successful though not brilliant careers. I guess if it's the direction the teams are willing to go in, that's how the upcoming NBA is going to be like. A lot of hits, but a heck of a lot of misses too, and a whole bunch of sleepers.

omg imagine a person as tall as shaq wid da same down low skillz like statz but wid da eyesight of jason kidd

Mon Nov 17, 2003 12:49 pm

my vote goes to drnick for biggest sig on the board

i hope in my lifetime i will get to see a starting lineup featuring five 7fters (not counting all star games)

Mon Nov 17, 2003 2:40 pm

My vote goes to you, then Old School Fool, then DrNick.

Imagine...

a team with Yao Ming at center, Tyson Chandler at PF, Dirk Nowitzki at SF, Damarr Johnson at SG, and this ivan dude at PG.

C- 7'6"
PF- 7'1"
SF- 7'1"
SG- 6'9"
PG- 7'1"

Mon Nov 17, 2003 2:48 pm

I for one would also like to see a line-up like that happen.

I think that might be as perfect a definition of dominance as you can get.

To crawford4mip4real: Nick is right. Your gif file is actually many times larger than drnick's.

Mon Nov 17, 2003 2:58 pm

thank you for the votes...1,000 apologies if the crawford .gif makes the page load slowly for certain posters. at least it's space efficent (wink)

What?

Mon Nov 17, 2003 7:29 pm

KG at the point anyone?

What?

Oh my god! Imagine a person as big as Shaquille O'Neal, with the same skills down low, and producing the same kind of statistics, but with the added eye sight and vision and point guard qualities of Jason Kidd.

That type of player would be very dominant.

Finally another guy in DrNick who speaks Pavenian. :D

As for the topic, a 7 footer may have some of the skills of a PG, but agility, speed etc? Look at the Nuggets, and certain other teams in recent times (ie Mavs last season, Suns of 97) who have gone with two point guards and been effective. Heck the nuggets played 2 pg's in the back court and Jon Barry at the 3 and have picked up wins here and there.
With those skills however, if he can play down low and combine skills with being somewhat physical, then (y) Does anyone know how much he weighs?

Mon Nov 17, 2003 10:17 pm

A year a go he weighed 185 lbs.

but he packed on some muscle and now weighs 235 lbs.

Wed Nov 19, 2003 4:20 pm

well... u say he is in HIGH SCHOOL... that doesn't mean anything...... plus, he is 7 foot ! and in high school, ofcourse he would dominate the high school games, u never know, he might turn out like shawn bradley
but if u guys are correct about his skills, i could only imagine how good he could be. a 7 foot point guard  that must be a first

Tue Nov 25, 2003 5:27 am

But I think I can be better than Nowitzki.

That's what he said...

Tue Nov 25, 2003 7:05 am

Dirk Nowitski = The best white man in the NBA.

Tue Nov 25, 2003 8:57 am

Hmmm, i dunno about that, i reckon Jason Kidd is better.

Tue Nov 25, 2003 1:12 pm

Is Jason Kidd really white? Doesn't look like your average white guy.

Jason Kidd is half-half white and black, same with another good point guard Bibby.

ahahaha

Jason Kidd is "blite"... so is Mike Bibby though he's a little darker, kinda like a latino... Mike Bibendez perhaps? Doug Christie is also hard to distinguish. Judging by them teeth he's half horse half ugly.

Wed Nov 26, 2003 6:57 am

Bibby´s mom is from Venezuela or something I believe

Wed Nov 26, 2003 8:59 am

i think the best white player iz/waz =jerry west

Wed Nov 26, 2003 11:50 am

Translation:
What are you saying here? Larry might be a good basketball player but he isn't the best white person to play the game. That person is jerry west he is really good.

by da way watz trifflin shouldv'e use sniffin instead

:D

Now I could be demented for pointing this out, but I don't think you've answered NBA_Fan_23's question.
