This isn't specifically an NBA question, but when a player switches teams, what happens to their old jersey?

Marketing-wise? Production is stopped but the remaining jerseys are still sold...at a discount price!
Team-wise? Maybe they auction it for charity/money, give it as a souvenir to the player or anyone who wants it in the team, burn it, or just throw it away.

If the Lakers decide to hang Shaq's #34 jersey from the rim of one of the hoops, the other team would probably get scared every time they go up for rebounds, but some players aren't as gullible.

The Lakers are the only lock to retire his jersey. I could see Orlando honouring him as he was their first superstar and led them to their first NBA Finals appearance but I wouldn't call it a given. Miami might consider it as well seeing as though he won a title with them but again, the Lakers seem like the only sure bet.

Miami will retire Shaq's jersey seeing as how it already retired the jersey of a player who didn't even play for the Heat and player from a different sport.
