You
still think that the fact the Celtics got 4 players is the reason other teams didn't?

Q just forgot that the Clippers suck.

You can try, but you won't succeed.

In all seriousness, that was awesome but I still feel it's a bit iffy to call something a dunk when players don't touch the rim, given the traditional definition of "dunk". At least his hand was fairly close to the rim though, I still say Howard's "Superman Dunk" was the most powerful layup in the history of basketball. But like I said, that was awesome and if we're not going to be pedantic about the definition of what constitutes a dunk then sure, that's an early contender for dunk of the year without a doubt.

If it's not a contender for dunk of the year then can we all at least agree that it's a contender for teabag of the year?
Mon Nov 22, 2010 11:12 am
Safe bet.

If nothing else, we can call it awesome. While the Clippers are off to a lousy start, it at least seems that Griffin was worth the wait.

gordon was nominated for the dunk contest last year i believe BG should already have the invite in the mail

I wouldn't go quite that far. The way I see it, they don't have to touch the rim, but the hand does have to enter the cylinder.

Description as taken from Wikipedia (which I realise anyone can edit but in this instance is probably a pretty good definition):
Wikipedia wrote:A slam dunk (or simply a dunk) is a type of basketball shot that is performed when a player jumps in the air and manually powers the ball downward through the basket with one or both hands over the rim.[1] This is considered a normal field goal attempt; if successful it is worth two points. The term "slam dunk" was coined by Los Angeles Lakers announcer Chick Hearn.[2] Prior to that, it was known as a dunk shot.[1]
That doesn't specifically mention
touching the rim which I feel is a standard aspect of a dunk, but I'd say that's a solid description/definition. So yeah, I'd be inclined to agree with the hand in the cylinder counting as a dunk since that's "power(ing) the ball downward through the basket with one or both hands over the rim", though in that respect I still feel Howard's Superman Dunk was really a powerful layup if we want to be pedantic about it.

I personally think it's a dunk. There's a reason a layup is called a lay
up. No down action, other than the ball going down through the hoop. The definition of "dunk" outside of basketball is, as dictionary.com says, "to dip or submerge something". Griffin "submerged" the ball with authority into the hoop, so he "slam dunked" it. This is just how I see it, it makes sense, I just find it kinda weird to have a debate over something as simple as a dunk.

It's a legitimate discussion, something we should be encouraging in this section.
As I said, I'd agree to call what Griffin did a dunk as he was right there at the rim. Howard's Superman Dunk in the dunk contest a few years back I still feel a bit iffy about, awesome as it looked. If touching the rim or at least having your hand above the cylinder isn't a requirement in defining a dunk attempt, then that opens up the floor for someone to dunk "from the three point line" in a contest without getting that close to the rim, so long as they're still fairly high up in the air when they fling the ball at the basket with some force. It just seems a little cheap, imagine if Dr J or MJ had done that on their famous free throw line dunks.
But in any case, I can go along with what Griffin did being called a dunk and completely agree that it's awesome. The Clippers seem to be in for yet another rough season, but Griffin at least looks like he'll be fun to watch.

Hard to follow those Griffin dunks, but this was pretty nice.
Not the cleanest pass ever, but smart considering everyone thought Durant would get it.

That gotta hurt

For some reason i find it more fascinating when smaller guards dunk.
Sometimes the pass makes the dunk that much better
The crossover is what made this dunk nasty. Welcome back to the NBA Childress.
Nice one by Monta
He get points for the hustle play. Still waiting on this guy to posterize a bigman. He almost did it to Bynum and J. O'Neal. It's going to happen eventually. This guy is ruthless.

Pretty dirty play by Brand there, he deserved the one game suspension. Impressive that McGee still finished with authority though.

nasty, just nasty
hopefully the dunk contest is good this year

It's gonna be one hell of a contest for sure.

I think pretty soon nba.com will have a top 20 countdown of top plays/dunks. Blake Griffin will probably have like 15 of them whenever the Clips play the Craps.
Sun Nov 28, 2010 10:24 pm
Last year set the bar tremendously low, so it'll be a major disappointment if they can't do better than that. I still think the rules need to be tweaked and fan voting eliminated, or opened only after the finalists finish their dunks so that the final round, you know, actually counts.
