Fan voting is a very bad idea, also when used for casting shows, make a band etc.
It is not primarily about quality and skills but popularity...and can be manipulated for sure.

What the hell was with Nate jumping off his teammates back? Notice in slow motion how he almost slipped off, barely getting air off his heal?

And I bet there are some php or java scripts out there that send out 10 votes per second or more automatically. Something like spam bots.

But again, why bother having the final round if people can start voting - and padding out either competitor's total votes - before they've even attempted their final two dunks? It's an event for the fans so having the fan vote isn't necessarily a bad idea in this case but when you can potentially win the vote before the contest is over, what's the point of the last round?

Just saw the highlights on nba.com and it was pretty weak indeed.
D12's dunk using the side of the backboard was quite impressive, and I thought Fernandez did a very decent slam with the behind-the-back pass against the board. But other than that, not very convincing.
I also agree that too many gimmicks and props ends up ruining the whole thing. Even if so many great dunks have already been made, there's always a way to get creative and come up with something unseen before, without having to resort to teammates, costumes, higher rims....

I was talking to my cousin after the contest ended and he was arguing favour of the gimmicks, his point being that everyone usually complains about the same old dunks being used and the gimmicks spice things up. I think that's a fair point and one that should be acknowledged, it is showmanship but the gimmicks tend to overshadow the dunks and when they're overused and/or repeated, it's not much better than everyone pulling out the old standards dunk-wise.

the right guy won.. although rudy definitely got robbed on his 2nd attempt. the degree of difficulty on that dunk was off the charts, imo.

happy to see nate not throwing up 10,000 attempts

fernandez had the best dunk of the night IMO in the second round. it just it took him too long and the judges were being bitches

The problem is, even though the rules don't state that players are penalised for a replacement I think the judges are always going to keep misses in mind and since their criteria is their own, it'll keep costing players especially if it does take a few attempts. 42 was way too low even if you are going to penalise for the replacement, however.
