hahaha, that song is awesome.

4 sure varejao is a flopper

Sat Jun 09, 2007 11:24 pm

i c some of u think being a ref is an ez job but keeping eyes on all 10 speedy athletes on court isn't
overall i think refs done good job in det-cav series
webber-sheed duo just isn't big defensive threat to other team
and can't create chances for guards
makes me miss ben-sheed days

and the way i c it floppin is a part of the game... playing smart
oh yeah sum player like varejao does it too much and soon refs gonna know it
but used to love reggie miller flops. it was a game momentum shifter

MILLLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRR TIME~~~~~~~~!!!!!!!!

Good post zans

On a less sarcastic note, I love this from JVG
“You know what was the first word of English [Varejao] learned? Flop.”

Yes, this thread has become my blog for random musings on flops...

damn..that really shook things up in my stomach.. i cant stop laughing on the Varejao..

Just plain genius..

Instead, you'll have to hand out fines, techs, and suspensions based on tape reviews. That's where it is more reliably determined, and thats the only way to get rid of it.

Right now, if they can fake out the ref, it gets REWARDED. But after the game, you can make the penalty so severe that they wont chase the reward the next time.

This is way too logical and awesome to ever be implemented.

That would be the fairest way of handing out punishments for flopping. All the same, I'd be in favour of more non-calls during the game as well. The game could do without a lot of the ticky-tack and soft shooting foul calls that would be non-calls in the old days anyway, regardless of whether flopping is involved or not.

I agree, non call during the game, penalties handed out afterwards.
This puts both of our suggestions together to make one super-awesome-rule.

Since it is so awesome though, it will never be implemented. Too many 'purists' who don't want video replays to wreck the game  You know the National Spelling Bee has instant replays to make decisions?

lebron clearly got fouled by bruce bowen at the end, no respect for him!

Yeah, but the National Spelling Bee has been a joke since all the steroid scandals.

I suppose the main argument against the video replays and handing out penalties afterwards is that the footage is going to be subject to overanalysis, but if the NBA wants to cut down on flopping and other incidents then reviewing the tape after the fact to see if any further action is warranted is the way to go.

LBJ will get respect if he leads the Cavs to win the playoffs!!

Not a good chance though! Cavs are dow 3-0!

They already won in the Playoffs, they're in the Finals aren't they.

Speaking of flops.

Huh, interesting list...
It's funny how some of them readily admit that they flop a lot. I guess flopping has been around for far longer than I thought....

Interesting read. I suppose the reason today's flop artists stand out so much is the way they sell the contact...or perhaps we've just become more critical and cynical when it comes to NBA basketball.

Thu Jun 14, 2007 11:30 am

1. Bill Laimbeer

2. Vlade Divac

3. John Stockton

4. Danny Ainge

5. Dennis Rodman

6. Anderson Varejao

7. Reggie Miller

8. Derek Fisher

9. Richard Hamilton

10. Karl Malone

My top picks all time from that list

Agreed on how the NBA applauds Varejao's "heroics" especially in the Detroit series. Game 6 was a terrific example. Sheed was ejected because he's all blown up with this flopping by Varejao. A slight bump yet Varejao falls back? Then a charge? Give me a break, the NBA needs a new commissioner.

I think it's the latter and we tend to remember the league with higher regards when we think of the 80's & 90's. It's hard not to get caught in the hype with the internet (message boards), and media coverage of every topic about the NBA now compared to yesteryears.

Thu Jun 14, 2007 12:01 pm

Absolutely. It's become fashionable to criticise and pin the blame for losses on the officiating.

I completely agree refs are getting worse and worse. It almost seems like they try to run the game with their calls. As a Detroit fan I was outraged when McDyess got ejected but to be fare Cavs had some terrible calls against them. The latest example is the obvious foul against LeBron. One would think that with all the technology we can minimize human error... The commissioner should really shape up.

Thu Jun 14, 2007 5:08 pm

One thing I have noticed from Cavs/Pistons and Cavs/Spurs, the refs are calling less flops.

Sure, every now and then they are calling obvious ones still... but there has been alot of times where there has been a flop, and the player has just fucking flown away - and there was no call. Its a thing of beauty to watch, really.

Like you said Andrew, a lot of the time it does result in a basket - but like I said, it hasn't stopped the amount of flopping ;)

Maybe a definitive announcement from the league would stop it though...

Fri Jun 15, 2007 10:33 am

It'll probably take a more consistent policy on non-calls before players change their habits; this is the Finals after all, so it's expected that they'll let the teams play with as little ticky-tack stuff as possible. If they're still letting the teams play on after flops in relatively meaningless regular season games then the message will probably get through. Of course, punishments after the fact like the ones we were talking about before would probably speed up the process.

Its fucking sickening watching Varejao 'play defence'

All he does is run back, and fall over... It is just fucking disgusting

Yep, I hate watching him play. When he flopped, got the call then triumphantly screamed, I wanted to hit him.

Fri Jun 15, 2007 1:58 pm

a few minutes later he did the same, this time though, Duncan just fed the ball to an open Oberto for And1....game over.

Both him and Gooden are two pieces of furniture on the court. They play basketball like soccer players with all the "fall down theatrics" and elbows when the ref is not watching. Disgusting!!! Although I have to give props to LeBron as much as I hate Cavs for sweeping Mo-town, the "ManChild" deserves the credit. He treated Pistons' D (one of the best Defensive teams in the league) like there was no defence!!! He is a freak of nature perfectly built for basketball. Detroit really should take some lessons from Spurs on how to double him.

P.S. Could someone suggest to Flip to get a couple of players who are NOT in their 30s and are about to retire. The whole starter line-up is going to go within 2-3 years. They are already underachieving because of stamina. Rip and Prince need some younger team-mates.

I'm not sure age is necessarily the first factor to consider, otherwise the oldest team in the league wouldn't be the Champs right now.
