Im happy with him taking more shots especially when his FG% is so high

tonight he was 15-26 thats over 50%

You named 3 power forwards where Carmelo is a Small Forward

Stephon Marbury was taking that many shots his stats would look a lot more pretty now also.

Marbury does take that many its just that he cant shoot so he has a low FG% therefore he has lower PPG therefore he is a terrible player and everyone knows that.

So to say Carmelo is top 2 in the nba.........

I dont remember saying anything of that nature.

Carmelo is taking well over twice as many shots as Marbury this year. Coming into this season Carmelo's career effective fg % is 46.5 while Marbury's is higher at 47.0, due to Marbury making a lot more 3 pointers and 3s are more than 2s of course. Look at Effective fg % instead of regular and you see guys like Dirk, Joe Johnson and more blowing away Carmelo because of the 3s.

At the end of the day, that's all that matters. Every year there's a few players that garner more votes than they should but ultimately don't get voted in by the fans nor selected as reserves by the coaches.

Fan voting is often criticised and not without reason, but in all fairness when has it ever produced two entire starting lineups that are wholly undeserving of being in the All-Star Game? Sometimes there'll be a player or two whose popularity allows them to win a place over a more deserving player but that still leaves eight or nine players out of the ten that start the game with an honour they deserve. Deserving players overlooked by the fans are seldom snubbed by the coaches as well (though Gilbert Arenas is a recent exception, only making the team as an injury replacement despite his impressive season last year).

Furthermore, when has a player who in no way, shape or form could be considered an All-Star been voted as a starter or for that matter, selected as a reserve? Looking back, the only players that really fit that description have been injury replacements and only a couple of them started the game, which is the coach's decision.

Sure, fan voting has its flaws, but it's an exaggeration to suggest that it completely ruins the All-Star Game. To me, a couple of questionable selections out of twenty four isn't enough to spoil the fun.

Well summed up Andrew, I agree.

And as for young unguardable scorer.. it seems that's that for the Carmelo ties to the all-star game this season.

I wonder how will the Iverson thing go. I mean, I remember only one time I think where a player was voted all-star without playing much (or at all) during the season. I think it was Magic in early 90s? In Iverson case, he might not get traded. But he will definetly make it to the all star game through votes. So it will be interesting to see Iverson represent 76'ers if he is not traded. Or how it will all turn out if he gets traded before the weekend during those trade deadline weeks.

Yeah I think he was retired at the time, must of been a hell of a game to watch because if I remember right he also won ASG MVP.

And this thread has gone to shit. But the whole reason for my original argument was that the deserving players should be picked and Battier should be no where near that list. If its your favorite player, whatever, but just think - alot more guys are much more deserving. If you want to watch your favorite player or in this case your whole favorite team, just watch a regular season game and not ruin it for not just the fans, but the deserving players.

Battier is not on that list Flite_23. It does not matter. Mikki Moore could be like some 3'rd in a position. It does not matter, as simple as that. There is just no way an undeserving player gets enough votes for all-star starting lineup. Sure, controversial players might get the votes, but not undeserving. T-Mac is there because he has so many fans and is one of the sort of popular and advertized players in the league (compared to JJ for example). The fan-votes team-fan aspect disappears , since no team has so many fans who just vote for their favorite teams players. Rockets has yes, quite many, but if you look at Battiers votes compared to T-Macs, even cutting those Battiers votes off T-Macs he'll end up in the same league with Nash.

And the rest are decided by coaches - the deserving spots in their opinion. If they'd vote Battier in the game, he'd be in the game. Voting system is only meant to determine starting lineups, the more popular a player is the more accurate the list is. The less votes a player gets the more inaccurate becomes (purely statistical fact, the less votes a player gets the more impact one vote has in the large picture, like giving ten votes to Mikki Moore and he'd jump dozens of players in the list)

Flite_23, all-star game is for the fans, nothing more. Fans get to see their favorite players. If a player plays well, he is bound to gather fans and thus has a chance of getting to the all-stars game.

If you want to watch your favorite player or in this case your whole favorite team, just watch a regular season game and not ruin it for not just the fans, but the deserving players.

Ruin it for the fans? lol, those fans or analysts who think this is a bad system for all stars game, aka the 10 most popular 14 most skilled system, are in a strong strong minority.

Yeah I think he was retired at the time, must of been a hell of a game to watch because if I remember right he also won ASG MVP.

Yes I just checked it up. It was 92 all-star game, and he retired after 90-91 season. He ended up with 25pt 5reb 9ast and MVP title with nine for twelve shooting.

Mon Dec 18, 2006 12:46 am

I think the point some of you are missing is that the problem isn't these undeserving players getting enough votes to be on the actual all-star team, it's them taking votes away from people who actually deserve it.

Mon Dec 18, 2006 1:46 am

Yey vote for carmelo! after the knicks brawl today fans should try to think twice in voting for him or battier since the latter is well behaved and cool headed

Mon Dec 18, 2006 2:42 am

^i wann smack the guy above me in the face.....battier's stats suck and he shouldnt be in the all-star game, period

This is an interesting debate/uproar, and i'm gonna put my view.

1. Its the FIRST returns. The allstar game isnt until mid- february two months from now. Stop freaking out so early. As people said, deserving players will make it by that time. The NBA once in awhile knows what its doing. Trust them for once and let things happen.

2. The NBA's leading scorer ('Melo) deserves votes: whether you think he's overrated or not, he's one of the best SF's in the game right now...maybe he's not unguardable or the like but he's damn good

3. The brawl, while a lapse in judgement on both sides: the foul was fucking ridiculous and if what Isiah said to 'melo is true, i have lost all respect for the organization. Yes i've lost some respect for the nuggets also, but they handled it well by not talking about it after the game and saying they will accept the decisions handed to them. I know the nuggets had annoyed the Knicks by leaving the starters in, but that does not justify that kind of foul. It will not affect my all star voting for a couple of reasons. A) i didnt vote for any Knicks anyway. B) I can relate to getting pissed off and taking a swing at somebody in the heat of the moment. Shit happens, and to expect these guys to take it lying down is insane.
