Wasn't Steve Irwin nominated a couple of years back for Australian of the Year?

Grant Hackett won Aussie Sportsperson of the Year... couldnt deny him of it though... considering that Bogut doesn't get much media attention here and also that Hackett did very well at world championship swimming... and the description of his past year sounded like the voice over guy had no idea what he was talking about.

'Andrew was the slam dunk of basketball, he made first pick in NBA draft...' <-- That's wat they said... it sounded weird.

Yeh Aussie commentators when it comes to NBA are stoned, same with the jurnos in the aussie print media. I was listening to 04 Athens Olympics on radio when Team USA were playing and the commentator kept on calling Dwayne Wade Dwayne Wade Jr.. Everyone regards him as Dwayne Wade, couldn't he at least someone about that.

All the overlays that popped up during the Athens Olympics on the Australian broadcast had "Timothy Duncan" and "Dwyane Wade Jr", which is fair enough I suppose but they obviously don't go by their full names. It was funnier to hear them try to pronounce "McDyess" back in 2000, not to mention "Abdur-Rahim".

Additionally, Andrew Gaze must not be allowed to commentate ever again. Ever.

It was ridiculous. In between the other commentator kissing his arse, his bias was simply embarrassing. Shane Heal could have stood at midcourt, flung the ball into the crowd and Gaze would've said "Smart play by Heal there, no way the other team can get it up there." His anti-US bais was a bit sickening as well. I mean, don't get me wrong, supporting Australia is great. But the way he was doing it was very unprofessional.

Gaze really had no idea haha... I read in his book and it seems that he loves Steve Kerr... maybe he has a thing for guys like Heal and Kerr. Cause they all similar I guess.

I'm constantly disappointed by the treatment of basketball and the attitude many Australians have towards it. I know my opinion is biased, but I don't see how it is "slow", "boring" or "unskillful". I guess a lot of people dislike it because it's "not Australian"...like rugby, cricket and tennis originated in Australia...

Another thing that ticked me off in the Sunday Telegraph Tv Guide they put the time for The ASG itself at 12pm Sunday AEST, it was 12pm Monday you dopes! Lucky I don't have Foxtel and had to rely on that tv guide. God Bless Sopcast!

It's 'great' how most of Aussie public is jumping on the soccer bandwagon. I like soccer but as the Simpsons put it in one of their episodes "Low scoring, lots of draws". Basketball all the way baby!

Majority of Aussie public stereotype basketball like its harlem globetrotters all the time or something.

There are other examples of the lame reception basketball gets here in Oz, can't think of any now but hopefully I can think of something else and type it later.

The fact Australia hasn't had much success internationally and the NBL is poorly managed and marketed doesn't help either.

I think Andrew Gaze's best moments have been while pronouncing player names.

Allan House-ton and Amare Stoooodamire being my favourites.

I should've known. Great player, did great things for Australian basketball. But seriously, he doesn't belong behind the mike. Get him back on the sidelines coaching perhaps. But not in the booth.
