apparently, Vinny Del Negro, who has no coaching experience has the job now.

it's strange to see the wave of players I watched play in the 90s becoming coaches

I suppose in all fairness he could do a good job but he doesn't strike me as the ideal candidate. I'm pretty disappointed with that decision if the reports are true.

He was also apparently the one who gave Kenny Smith the idea for the dunk at 1:50 in this video:

man, i remember watching past dunk contests and seeing guys known as shooters later on trying the dunk contest like Rex Chapman in this video. I miss the days where dunks just made you say "ooooo" after they were done.

I'd like to see them go back to trying tricks with the ball rather than pulling out the gimmicks. The 2008 contest was fun and all but it's getting dangerously close to jumping the shark as far as props and gimmicks are concerned.

Getting back to Del Negro, I'm watching the latest Around the Horn at the moment and no one was buying his hiring as the right move for the Bulls, though Adande suggested that with the right assistants, it could work out. I guess that's the best case scenario but I'm still disappointed Paxson seems to have settled on someone without any coaching experience.

Very surprising. I'd love to hear the spin Pax puts on for this move.

Hooray for Kenny Walker's hair.

There were reports of Bob Hill getting the job as one of Del Negro's assistants.

I can see him taking over in January.

Me too, the deal's reportedly only a couple of years so presumably they won't consider it too much of a burden to let him go sooner rather than later if things don't pan out.

My guess will be hyping his years as a player in the league along with the usual buzzwords of "fresh perspective", "new direction" and "new leadership", which in all fairness would be trotted out no matter who got the job but is a harder sell in this case.

pardon the late reply...

AndrewI believe those tactics you mentioned Skiles using were mostly before they started winning. From what I saw, the more consistent the players were, (esp Gordon), the more time they got on the court… very similar to what good ol’ Popovich was doing with Manu &TP in the younger years. Popovich trusts those 2 because now they earned it/now play at “all star” levels

Back to Skiles… Seldom would you see the full lineups taken out at during the 2006-07 seasons. The crazy lineup changes resurfaced coincidentally when the team started playing like crap. And this was when Skiles was giving the starters full quarters, sometimes 2, to prove themselves: The starters played like they were hungover in the 1stqtr and be down by double digits. The subs would come in and narrow the lead down. Halftime. Then the 3rd the quarter resumed and the starters would play like crap again so midway through the 3rd, everyone got yanked.

Personally I believe that Skiles gets this hardass label from being a chump to only a few players: Kidd, Chandler, Sefolosha. Kidd, I can’t comment on. Chandler- I think he’s a puss & it was his fault for not working his ass off when he was still with the Bulls. Thabo- I believe he’s mentally weak. But honestly, you can’t win them all. Even the great Phil Jackson had a whooping boy from each of the 3peat teams. He would constantly pick on Horace Grant during practices and even embarrass him in front of teammates. He would think that Grant was faking the flu only to see Grant puking in garbages during timeouts in games/practices. The same could be said for Kukoc, who would mutter in his native language profanities after frequent Jackson tongue lashings

Matthew
My interpretation of rebuilding is starting from scratch… similar to what the bulls did in 1999 when they traded Pippen for peanuts, drafted Elton Brand, and brought in players like Dalibor Bagaric & Kornel David (lol how sad). IMO I don’t see Paxson doing that.. the word I would say is re-tooling. glad that’s squared away

I’m not really sure why you think Deng would go to Memphis with the already mentioned players being there. Memphis needs post players , not another SF. Toronto could be an option for Gordon but I’m not sure with an already smallish TJ Ford/Calderon PG combo, they’d want to pair that w/Gordon. Miami & the Wiz could be options I suppose but unlikely

I thought part of our debate was on whether or not some players were rotation players. I said Gooden was one of the many experienced players in the rotation. You said he’s just there because of the trade. I said regardless he’s playing while he’s there. Is that cleared up now? Lol

So exactly what do you propose the bulls do when the shot clock is running out? The bulls were last in fg% last year, they’ll take anything they can get lol. Who cares what lebron james thinks? The bulls have no one near that talent level to take & make a big shot.

Interesting point of hard asses vs the dedicated. Can’t say I agree. C’mon- players like Jordan, Malone, Stockton, let alone Rodman were scared of no one. but I’ll just leave it at that
