Great win in game 3. Marion's starting to heat up now, and just in time.

Yet nobody complains when people say things like "We went to war in Iraq because we needed to remove Saddam's regime."

Also, if your talking about a game, its a lot easier to be able to differentiate which team you're talking about.

"They outrebounded them so badly because they just didn't box out" is confusing.

"They outrebounded us so badly because we didn't box out" is more clear in what team you are talking about.

Sun May 14, 2006 1:55 pm

Or you know what else is even more clear? Use a team name. For example, I said this to a friend today "I was so happy that Phoenix really worked hard on the glass yesterday. They did a great job."

No confusion there. (Y)

It gets so repetitive to say a team name over and over again in conversation.

But after you're talking for a while it would take a special kind of mentally handicapped person to not realize who you're talking about.

Anyways, it's stupid to say 'we'.

I agree, my uncle does the same thing. When our family visits during Christmas, he comes and watches Denver Broncos games and refers to the team and himself as "We".

The use of the subject pronoun we implies that you are a member of a group... fans are outside people who are entertained by the players. It always gives me the impression that whoever says it is really in denial... perhaps that they never reached pro-athlete status.

Edit:

Indy, one reason people refer to going to war as "We" is because both the citizens and soldiers are Americans. They are going to war representing the entire country. A victory for our soldiers is a victory for America thus encompassing both citizen and soldier.

A victory for an NBA team isn't a victory for the fans as well?? I strongly disagree. The fans have just as much a connection to the team as do citizens with the government.

I can understand how a distant fan from another country who can't even watch all the games can not understand the whole "we" thing, but as someone who is a season ticket holder for the Pacers, I feel a whole lot more connected the the Pacers organization then I do to the United States government.

Sun May 14, 2006 3:50 pm

But you're not connected... you still remain a fan until they sign you or you get a job within the organisation.

I disagree for the simple fact that it's the fans who pay the players' salaries. Not directly of course, but if we didn't watch the games or go to the games, they wouldn't be getting paid millions.

The country is the same. We pay our taxes, so we're citizens.

The fans are still the backbone of the organization. Just like the citizens are the backbone of a country.

Mon May 15, 2006 1:15 am

That doesn't mean they're a part of the organisation. I think the fans overrate themselves terribly.

Mon May 15, 2006 12:31 pm

What the hell? At the end of the last game the announcers said the next gane would be Monday. I happened to be watching TV and came across the game with 6 seconds left. I am so fucking pissed at Doug Collins' moronic ass.

Mon May 15, 2006 12:32 pm

Clippers win....this one is going the distance probably.

Mon May 15, 2006 12:32 pm

Man, I missed the whole game... so pissed!!!!!

Mon May 15, 2006 3:38 pm

Regarding the "we" discussion - I always refer to my team as "we" when hanging out with my buddies in real life and we're talking sports. Of course, I'm a Michigan resident, so I'm a fan of all the Detroit teams, naturally. So when the Pistons, Redwings, or Lions are on TV, or being talked about or whatever, everybody I know including myself, refer to them as "we" - there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, it comes natural... and everyone knows who you're talking about.

When I post on the forum (pretty rarely :P ) I always refer to the Pistons as the Pistons, not "we." I really don't believe that people do it because they feel more important than they really are.. that's a stretch, don't ya think? I just think it's more appropriate to refer to "your" team as their team name, not as "we" when you are discussing it with strangers across the world. Not everybody knows who you are talking about, and not everybody knows how big of a fan you are, etc. It confuses me the most when people refer to teams as "we" when they live in a different city/state/country than their favorite team! That just comes off as being strange to me...

With all that said, it's really not a big deal, and it definitely doesn't merit a bunch of replies criticizing someone who says "we played good today." Just let them talk about their team the way they want to, it's not hurting anyone that people say "we" sometimes.

On-Topic: I completely missed the game too lol.. ah well, gonna try to catch it on ESPN replay if it's on late tonight. I'm glad the Clippers tied it up, a 2-2 series is much more exciting than a 3-1 series (except in the VERY rare case where a team pulls a Phoenix in round 1 :P ). Not to mention I picked the Clips in 6. (Y)

Mon May 15, 2006 4:22 pm

You didn't miss much Colin, the game wasn't great. The Suns kept missing wide open 3's again, and were killed on rebounds. I really was amazed the score got as high as it did (and was as close) considering at one time they were 2 of 13 or so and missed 9 3's in a row.

The Suns have a weakness that is going to hurt them a lot, and keep them from winning the Western Conference, at least this year. They are HORRIBLE at winning close games.

Two S's two L's baby. Comin up big again!

Wed May 17, 2006 3:26 pm

Sam screws up BIG time with the 8 second, then Tim Thomas throws it up with at least 2.5 on the clock.

Eye for an eye it seems.

Wed May 17, 2006 3:29 pm

Wow- Anybody else think the Suns got robbed, just a little? On the play where Sam made the game-tying 3-pointer, Barbosa got drilled by Elton Brand. Not even going to bother explaining the Marion foul...

Wed May 17, 2006 3:36 pm

I think I'll go watch the last minute or so. My first bit of playoff basketball in a while. I'll comment on those calls after I see a couple replays.

edit: Nash just threw the game away. I guess it was a waste of time.

edit: Daaaayum! Raja hit a nice clutch 3 to tie the game with 1.1 to go in overtime. I guess I'll stick around. Double Overtime.

Wed May 17, 2006 3:46 pm

Suns didn't get robbed. There were plenty of plays earlier that favoured them.

I LOVE RAJA!!!

Clippers made some big mistakes at the end of the 4th/OT.

Wed May 17, 2006 3:54 pm

Down goes Marion

Wed May 17, 2006 4:02 pm

Up Goes Marion.

Wed May 17, 2006 4:14 pm

YAHOOOOOOO!

Great game. The Clippers just puttered out and made silly mistakes.

Wed May 17, 2006 4:14 pm

Phx win.......too many mental mistakes on both ends

Raja Bell is a flopper though, see the acting on that Cassell post up.
