Reading the event description again, it seems like the judges are deciding everything from beginning to end, which is what I'd prefer to see. Thumbs up for that I guess, it's just a shame they had to go ahead and change the rest of the format.

The freestyle portion didn't do much for the contest in 1995-1997, but that's a good point about it potentially reducing gimmicks.

I like what we got this year though. Lillard, Wall, and PG are superstars. Props to them for taking part in this watered down competition.

That was insane. It wouldn't surprise me if NBA players are discouraged from getting too crazy with their attempts lest they injure themselves in a bad fall or what have you, but that's the kind of stuff I want to see: minimal use of props, great athleticism, creative stuff with the ball in the air and at the rim.

I watch all the TFB stuff, HoopMixTape, etc. Something has been done facing the basket, a double honey dip, but I've never seen anything like that until it popped up in my sub feed the other day.

I was not as impressed with Wall's dunk as everybody else just because I've seen that video of the 6'1 white guy do that same dunk but with a double honey dip some days earlier.

Overall a weak ass All-Star Saturday.

It would've been better if they'll just use the freestyle round as a coin toss to whose team will go first on the individual rounds then get back to the points system instead of that american idol-inspired shit they pulled out, have a 3 round dunk off, add up the scores of each dunker on each team to determine the winning team and then the best dunker...

That was pretty terrible. The dunk he did on the game was not the same as the one he did. Shows that the cable had nothing to do with his dunk.

Barnes was so cringeworthy, ugh. "Its gunna be in the game tonight!" ...that's, um, been in the game since last year? (I think at least, Guru says shuddup).

Freestyle wasn't bad, wouldn't mind that returning. Stupid "first round" dunks are terrible though. I'm starting to believe that no one in the NBA wants to actually have a dunk contest anymore, and they are just finding ways to cop players out so they can do 1 shitty dunk and live off hype and what ifs.

At the very least, it should have been double elimination. This format really should have been tested in the d-league first though, who BTW had a classical dunk contest and was damn decent. But yes, more of the same from the NBA.

The Barnes 2K dunk was such a flop. He didn't even complete the dunk they showed later. The Tablet wasn't even on. It wasn't even on.

that barnes dunk was probably one of the worst gimmick dunks of all time. 2k basically paid him to do a dunk that's already in the game and they did the whole "oh we're mo-capping this" stunt and then afterwards they showed a pre-recorded basketball guitar hero game on the big screen
