I remember about a year or two ago Hakeem Olajuwon was inducted to the 50 greatest players list. How is that possible when there was already 50 on the list?

I'm not sure what list you're referring to. As far as I know, Hakeem was on the original top 50 players list made in 97, as well as teammates Charles Barkley and Clyde Drexler.

Another example is maguis who posted that Shaq should be on the list when he was on the list. Although Shaq did get booed by the Cleveland fans because he didn't attend the 97 All Star game half-time show because of his knee injury.

sheesh, isnt a guy allowed to make a mistake? i thought shaq wasnt on the list, and i briefly scanned the list again and probably missed his name, its not like i did it on purpose you know. and if he wasnt on the list he should be (with his present day accomplishments). you know what i hate? people making honest mistakes and others poking it into their faces.

Quote:
1. dirk nowitzki -- arguably changed the nba, because he opened their eyes wider to the european talent pool and also because of his small forward/shooting guard skills in a big man frame.

2. chris webber -- im not really a fan, but he has had a brilliant career statistically and some competitive if maybe dissapointing playoffs

3. stephon marbury -- if he can stay a 20 and 8-9 player theres no reason he shouldnt be, what he needs to force the issue is a competitive and rememberful playoffs. he can still improve in my opinion as well since this off season he had his ankles cleaned out, and he played at a 20 and 9 rate injured last season.

4. steve francis -- mucho talent, mucho potential, lets see if he can stay the course.

5. jemraine o'neal/elton brand -- when i hear their name i just dont think 'dominating' and thats the knock. plus their playoffs (or in brands case lack thereof) have been somewhat average.

7. ben wallace -- defensive king show us a few more seasons of your greatness.

Great for their eras, but not for all time.

you misquote me. before this little list i said this:

......there are a lot of players on the verge of course, but as i said, they're still young and can still be disproven or prove more (e.g. consistently good seasons, ability to eleveta teammates play, and most importantly championships) heres my list of on the verge:

and by that i meant they MIGHT (big emphasis might) be on the list if they improve and show some playoff accomplishments. kind of like what someone said about how shaq shouldntve gotten in because he was only in the league 4 years at the time (to which i agree). you have to prove long term greatness. i put kobe/tmac/garnett in my shoe in list because i believe that they will, and that is my opinion.

You guys are basically mentioning all the stars of today. Only a select few of them will make the top 50, and will be classified as great players of the all time.

well thats because all the stars of yesterday that should be on the list are. the only ones left to include are the stars of today. and i think only 5 of them are shoe ins.

pippen not being in the list is the funniest thing i have ever heard. pippen was the complete player and yes, maybe he couldnt win it all without mj (but hell, conference finals is pretty good), but you know what? i dont think mj couldnve won them without pip. pip deserves to be where he is, and i would rate him as probably my best small forward of all time.

Sure, people make honest mistakes but a lot of times people make careless mistakes. I didn't mean to poke it into your face but if you're sensitive about things like that then I apologize if it came out like that. I was just using your comment as an example of how people don't bother looking up something or they don't even know much about something but they have opinions on it anyways. Like Vins15 who said Scottie shouldn't be on the list because MJ was the only reason the Bulls won a championship. That's what bothers me because anyone who knows about the old Bulls knows different than what Vins15 said. And your post, among others, about Shaq, whether you like it or not, was another example of how people need to put a little bit more time and thought when they post.

thats fine and i agree people should take more time, but honest mistakes shouldnt be among things considered lazy or no research done, etc.. everyone makes them. posts that should be criticized are the ones that conciously fail to make any contribution, example posts without reasons or backing or arguments without proper points. simply saying "Joe Schmoe is emperor and if you dont agree you suck" is far worse. people who make mistakes have to have an argument or fact to make a mistake about and thus did 'some' research and put at least some thought into the argument they were making and are just so freakishly stupid they made teh mistake anyway  :D god bless.

Since SLAM has always been a reliable source, I think it's fair to say that this is the most recent top players of all time list. Of the players who didn't make the top 50, I believe that only five will make it. They are Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, and Tracy McGrady. I'm not sure who I'd bump off(It won't necessarily be 45-50) but those five are certainly going to be on by the end of their careers, in my opinion.

i'd put my money that tim duncan will jump high on that list by the end part of his career, it might even be justifable now with his mvps and championships, but he's still young and can prove more i guess.

i think scottie and hakeem should be a bit higher too.
