I think in the future Okur will prove to be one of the better rookies from this year.
I still think Ming should win it, he had to play under the pressure of huge expectations, whereas Stoudemire had no such expectations. Ofcourse, Stoudemire still has played a very good rookie season.

See, that's what I mean. A case can be made for both Ming and Stoudemire, which is why co-ROY isn't out of the question. Or maybe I can't decide so am refusing to commit myself to a prediction.

Ming had the higher expectations coming into the league, and he has lived up to them; Stoudemire exceeded the general expectations of a player who has come straight from high school. Ming displaced a decent veteran centre to move into the starting lineup; Stoudemire has beaten out both Outlaw and Gugliotta to start at PF (though Outlaw has moved to centre). Ming's numbers are superior to the usual fare of the 7'4"+ NBA centre; Stoudemire's numbers are better than most high school players in the first year in the NBA.

If you want to go by the amount of publicity as well as impact on the team and overall production, it should be Ming. If you want to take the team's success into account as well as individual statistics, it should be Stoudemire. If you want to judge it fairly, IMHO, it should be both.

(Having read this, the ROY voters conspired to prove Andrew Begley wrong and give the award to Caron Butler )

I don't think there's any rule prohibiting it, but I somehow doubt they'd name 3 players co-anything. They probably won't even award a co-ROY, fair as it may seem.

Imo they should have just one r.o.y. It is very hard to choose one, both amare and yao (and Butler ) have had a great year. Also imo, in future they could have one r.o.y for the east and one for the west. Both Houston and Phoenix have two games left for there rookies to win some more vote's , i vote amare.

I guess it would be better to try and select a lone ROY. I keep pushing for Ming/Stoudemire as co-ROY, in part because if one of them wins it, I can say I was half right.

The hype might come back to haunt LeBron though - it certainly places great expectations on him. It's interesting to think that a lot of players who we consider some of the greatest in NBA history (or at least the last couple of decades) - Michael Jordan, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Clyde Drexler, Charles Barkley, Scottie Pippen to name just a few - were not given as much attention entering the league and/or were selected much lower than they would be had their respective drafts been done over.

Others, like Magic, Bird, Wilt, Kareem, and Russell were all expected to be great, so their place in history is not as surprising, given the expectations of them. But for some highly touted players - Anfernee Hardaway, Grant Hill and Derrick Coleman among others - the hype and expectations were never quite fulfilled for one reason or another.

That's not to say LeBron will be a bust, far from it. But it will be interesting to see if he's as good as expected at the professional level.

As far as this season's ROY goes, I'm starting to learn towards Amare, who is in the midst of another solid performance against the Blazers (though the Suns are currently down by 20, or so NBA.com Live Scores lead me to believe).

What a lot of people seem to forget, if Ming wins it it takes nothing away from the accomplishment Amare has made. He'll still have had a great season especially for a player straight out of high school.

That's true. Ming, Stoudemire and Butler have all had solid rookie seasons, and you could probably make a case for all of them to win ROY. Two of them are going to be passed over when the award is handed out (I doubt they'd award it to 3 people, and two players as co-ROY has only happened twice before). Ming and Stoudemire are slightly apart from Butler in contending for the award though.

Guess we'll find out who will receive the honour soon enough.

I'd like to see Caron Butler get it cause he has been the most consistent out of all of them.
he has played at the same level all season, where as Ming and Amare took about 10-15 games to get going, and now Amre and Ming have slowed down again.
so I would really take Caron Butler.
but if it was to go to the rookie on a winning team, then its Amare coz Phoenix are the only team out of the 3 candidates that made the playoffs.
If i went with hype, then it would be Ming lol.
