Who is John Amaechi?
A scrub of a basketball player that everyone forgot about.

Why is him coming out headline news?
Its not really.

Go to NBA.com, i dont see anything about this guy. Then go to espn.com and ohh they have him sitting right where they report big news on the front page of their NBA section.

So why does espn have him front page news and nba.com doesnt have anything on him?
Because espn is trying to make money off him being gay. His NEW BOOK! is being published by ESPN Books!

One espn writer made a big article about him coming out, even went on to say how he looks forward to reading Amaechi's book. Wow what a surprise, i wonder what else this guy does to kiss his bosses ass.

Sorry but this is just news because espn is trying to make money off it, i bet in a month everyone will forget who John Amaechi is all over again, and we can get back to reading real news about basketball. In the meantime we have to look past this crap.

to all the people complaining aboutit being "news" because his gay. have you stopped to think its actually good newss with relation to gay people being accepted in sports? shit people always have to look at the negative even when its not there.

he used to host the nba games over here in england with a guy called mark webster. before ameech (england nickname) went to the nba he was the mvp in the english league i saw him play a game at newcastle, he avaraged 30 points for that season. he absoloutley tore it up.

on a side note his a really intilectual (unlike me judging by the spelling) person and id much rather an nba player be gay and be like that then some thug from "the streets" claiming his rolling and gunna pop bitches in a bar.

I think you miss the point.

It's not about "looking at the negatives" with a sportsman being gay, and taking up the headlines. That's not what's wrong with this picture. What is unfortunate is the big deal made out of it. I think it's great that he's happy to admit it. (Y) And yes it is a step towards equality. And no doubt he is still the same person, and shouldn't be judged any differently. But don't you think it's a bit unfortunate that we're even here talking about it right now? I mean, does it even matter what his sexuality is? It doesn't to me. He can love the cock or he can love the pussy, but he's a basketball player so it doesn't even matter what orifice he'd rather penetrate.

I realise how graphic that last sentance was, but i was trying to make a point.

He's gay; great! Whatever floats your boat. Let's play some bball.

no i think you miss my point, the point i was making was that its news because his the "first" basketball player to come out of the closet. lets say when the 100th nba player comes out of the closet in lets say 50 years time, i dont think it will be news like ameech has been. do you get what i mean? if it were negative then itd be news for all 100 gay players.

i think its news for the fact his the first and for that fact he has done it for the right reasons. its not like people are saying "oh my god meech is a fag!". its more like meech is the first ball player to come out "well done!"

You don't see any NBA players announcing that they're heterosexual, so for the media to make a big deal of Amaechi clearly has an air of homophobia to it.

My favorite post-Super-Bowl line was from Michael Irvin while discussing Tony Dungy being the first black coach to win the Super Bowl. He said that he looks forward to a day when it doesn't matter what a coach or player's skin color is and no one needs to point it out, yet he's on an ESPN show that's specifically pointing it out in Dungy's case. It's totally bizarre having the media accuse themselves of being racists.

Charles Barkley just said on PTI that he had gay teammates in the NBA.

I think that's interesting because it kind of shoots down the whole argument that players don't come out because they'll be ridiculed in the lockerroom.

i always thoughtm why come out? do people openly go "hey i am straight"? i think gay people see being gay just as we see being straight, perfectly natural. so if a gay man sees being gay as normal then why would he ever make a big deal about it anyway?

I don't think you guys are getting it. It is a big deal, regardless of whether ESPN is publishing his book or not. Something like this could open the doors for someone of a much higher profile to come out, and even if you 'dont care' about it, the fact is, a LOT of people do, and discriminate because of it.

Race relations have improved over time, but the gays have been contiunally frowned upon. I think if someone important were to come out, it would be a real eye opener for homophobes.

There is a difference between being born black, and choosing to suck dick. Please dont try and say gays are going through what african americans had to go through, or even close to anything they had to go through. Did i say had? sorry, even today still go through. Its kind of hard to hide your skin color, you dont have to tell anyone what sexual prefrence you are.

ok, I've argued this before, but WHY would anyone "choose to suck dick"? It makes no sense if you had a choice between homosexuality and heterosexuality that you pick the lifestyle that would make you ridiculed, looked down upon, and being basically a second-class citizen. I'm sick of that shit. because if I had the choice, there's no way in hell i'd pick to be gay.

This all depends on your beliefs of sexuality. Do you take it as a choice? or do you take it as they cant help it? Or do think that there's both in this world? I'm personally leaning towards the third option solely because: yes i know guys i've known since 9 years old who came out and we were like "ah, that explains a large portion of things" no big deal. I dont think it was a conscious choice, he just likes dudes, no big deal. However other guys I know that did NOTHING but chase chicks and try to have sex with them(and i have the girls telling the stories not the guys) in high school who are now gay in college: that is an experimental choice.

On the issue at hand: Big deal? not sure why...it'd be like finding out a white guy was a jew. It shouldnt matter so why is it such a big deal? Dont give me that "it'll open doors" speech. The players are still going to be macho homophobes in a large majority and any ACTIVE player who comes out is gonna have real issues; therefore i dont think an active player will come out no matter what doors have bene opened.

EDIT: i realized i used the phrase big deal 4 times (and practically in succesion) in this post...i need to stop posting so close to going to sleep and i will work on increasing my vocabulary....

Well some people tend to experiment, and some may like it, and then keep it going. Just like drugs, some people want to quit, but they like it too much to stop. Some people like to have sex with animals, if that was legal should we accept them too? Some people want to have sex with little kids, if that was legal should we accept them too? The list goes on and on. Just because having sex with the same sex isnt against the law doesnt mean its right, or natural. The whole point of sex is to pro create, doesnt matter if you believe in god, or believe in evolution. Both theories are against homosexuality. Which in the end makes homosexuality seem like a disorder more then a natural way of life.

Evolution is not against anything. Just because more successful beings survive doesn't mean that they are superior or that the less successful being is 'worse'. It is just less successful, therefore it will survive less easy. Evolution does not have any form of morality.

The fact that you're comparing homosexuality to drugs, having sex with animals and children proves that you really have no idea what you're talking about.

so smoking cigarettes is like being gay? people experiment with it, get hooked and are smoker for life.
I don't see how those comparisons help your argument here. you are talking about legal stuff here like pedophiles and shit
Some people want to have sex with little kids, if that was legal should we accept them too?

it's not a matter of accepting gays into society like criminals. Gays did nothing wrong. they are perfectly innocent people that get hated on for no (obvious) reason. I mean, interracial marriages were illegal and looked down upon up until the last 10 years or so, and I don't see anything wrong with that either. What I tihnk it is is the religious right and those crazy religious people that take it too far that's fucking it up for everyone else. They live like it it's fucking 1900 and try to keep everything like how it used to be. Things change, people change. The society in which we live in is not perfect. We can't get closer to perfection by keeping it the way it is, so we gotta change things up and see if it's any better.
I mean, BYU (brigham young university, a Mormon school in Utah) didn't allow blacks into their school until 1989. and that's probably not out of choice either, their blond haired blue eyed Mormons weren't cutting it on the basketball court & football field so they had to recruit.

i dunno my roommate had a gay manager at his old work and this dude was gay but he partied with us a few times and he knew he liked dudes but he still knew that he was a man. he didn't act like a diva or nothing, he acted like a dude that happens to like other dudes. and we appreciated that.

That's actually legal in Denmark :-)

Please, bare us the evolution theories - having gay sex is just like putting on a condom in that regard. Most of the time, sex is just playing around. I don't see why it's a big deal whether you play around with men or women as long as it's working for you.

Even though I respect Amaechi's decission to come out, it's not a big deal until an active player comes out. How would Ron Artest act if he cought Kevin Martin checking him out in the shower after a game?

haha only at the NLSC forum could a topic about john amechi turn in to a topic about shagging animals!

anyways-------i thought this was the perfect response on the whole subject and it was from doc rivers.

Rivers is not phased by John Amaechi’s coming out. “So what?” said Rivers, who coached Amaechi for two seasons in Orlando. “Can he rebound? Can he shoot? Can he defend? … When I was coaching him, he was a great kid. He did as much charity work as anyone in the city and he’s still doing it. To me, I wish that’s what we focused on, but unfortunately we’re talking about his sexual orientation, which I really could (care less about).”

I just believe that homosexuality is a similar form of mental illness, much like the people who want to have sex with kids have. But since homosexualty has been accepted so much these days, its looked at as a natural thing. It wouldnt surprise me in the year 2050 that people will accept 40 year old men having a "loving relationship" with a ten year old girl. Who are we to stop them from loving each other?

Back to John Amaechi,

Who?
