I asked some friends about that last year. None of them (including myself) would buy a jersey that says "GAY" in the back of it. Anyways, here in Spain we're so liberal. (Y)

On a second though, no, I don't see anyone buying a Rudy Gay jersey. Go ahead and do it, though, so I can make fun of your sexuality.

Um... you don't think wearing something with the word "GAY" on your back is much worse than "BIRD"? How exactly, what hidden meaning does Bird have that I'm obviously missing.

Eh, I'm just trying to convince all of you to buy the jersey so that I can laugh at you and your unidentified sexuality.

why is everyone being so immature about this anyway? if you wear a basketball jersey with the word "gay" in the name slot, anyone who thinks that means you're gay is a moron.

So you'd wear a jersey with "gay" on the back if you had the chance?

We're not saying that homosexuals have cooties or anything, most posters here just feel that it won't be a very popular jersey considering the fact that it'd be ridiculed by others.

I wouldn't wear his jersey just because I feel that he's one of the most overrated players in the draft, specifically in terms of his workrate.

if i actually liked the player....not in THAT way.

but seriously...yeah why not?

hmmm but isnt this word on the hit list as far as personalized jerseys go?
i think someone posted a long list of words you couldnt use on nba personalized jerseys... maybe the bigger issue is if the nba would sell this jersey.

i would buy it, its just a jersey, to hell with anyone who is too damn immature to understand that it represents a players name. oh big deal it says gay. on the other hand though i see this guys shirt as kinda having the exact opposite effect that satan's jersey had for the devils. most people didnt even know who the hell that guy was and they still bought his jersey.

I will buy if he is a superstar like Iverson or Duncan and every body knows who those players are. And/or ill buy it if he plays In Philly (my home team) cause everyone in my school and neighborhood would know who the jersey represents.

Some people here were arguing about Bird and Gay jerseys, but the thing is... the reason people wear LArry Bird jerseys is because A LOT of people know who he is, and becuase he is a hall of famer and like, I said, very well known. Rudy gay is nothing compared to Larry Bird in terms of popularity, and lots of people never heard of this guy.

WouldI buy a Rudy Gay jersey? Nope.

I fail to see how this discussion is immature when it's really discussing the immaturity of people as it pertains to buying a jersey with "Gay" on the back. Since a lot of men are sensitive to any threat or challenge to their masculinity or sexuality it's fair enough to suggest some fans will be hesitant about buying a Rudy Gay jersey.

I'm sure he doesn't care about his surname by this point of his life and it won't matter to a lot of people. His jersey will sell. But the question posed is will some people, right or wrong, be unenthusiastic about buying and wearing the jersey because "Gay" will be displayed on the back. And I think the answer is yes. Immature? Sure. An unfounded fear about the implications of wearing such a jersey? Maybe. But I think that's what will happen because - right or wrong - it would seem to be human nature, particularly amongst males.

Personally I wouldn't wear one, it's got nothing to do with caring about what people think or not being homophobic etc, I'd just like to go out without having the occassional idiot yell something out at me because of it. Plain and simple.

I would assume that anyone who likes the guy, and isn't childish enough to think that the word "Gay" on the back means anything more than a name, would buy his top.

It was Olivier Saint-Jean, but who really cares anyway?

and about him using his Middle name, I'm pretty sure I heard on one of CBS's telecasts that his Middle name is Marvin, as in the late singer Marvin Gaye. so that would make him Rudy Marvin Gay... not sure Rudy Marvin would sound any better.

How about Head? If the Rockets draft Gay we could have a Gay-Head backcourt (I'm pretty sure I've told this joke before).

Its better to be a Fucka than be Gay

Haha would be funny if someone came in the league with a first name that starts with R and Gay for their surname and since there would be two players like that they would have to use their middle name initial on their jersey to avoid confusion. So imagine that this player had a middle name that started with U. So their jersey would be R. U. Gay

I wouldn't. The guy disappears at the end of games and will never become a star in the NBA with the intensity I saw him play with during his UConn days.

If Fucka ever came to the NBA, I reckon his jersey would sell better than expected...and subsequently be banned from schools and cause people to cluck their tongues wherever the wearer should go.
