In their first re-match since last season's exciting semi-finals series, the Sydney Kings have come away with a convincing 107-99 pre-season victory against the Brisbane Bullets at the Boondall Sports Centre.
Played under typical pre-season protocol with both coaches freely rotating players, the Bullets generally trailed the visitors throughout the game. Despite a brief respite which saw Brisbane leading by a pair at three-quarter time, the Kings switched on the turbos on the final period to run away with the match.
Olympian Jason Smith led the way for the victors with a 22-point haul, which included a swag of six triples. Team-mate Brad Sheridan also notched 22 points, including four treys.
For the Bullets, a clean-shaven Kevin Freeman tallied a game-high 23 points, whilst fellow import Bobby Brannen had 20.
SYDNEY
Jason Smith - 22pts (6/9 3pt) in a well-rounded game. Made a crucial block on K-Free when the Bullets were attempting a run at the end of the game. Very quick release three pointers which noone had a chance of stopping.
Bradley Sheridan - 22pts (4/6 3pt). Bulk of his points came off open looks from ball rotation. Didn't create much himself. Didn' miss too much after first quarter.
CJ Bruton - 16pts, 6ast. Played about as well as one would expect. Highlight of his night would probably be his difficult fadeaway over Eversteyn.
Ben Knight - 12pts, 7rebs, 7ast. Seemed to fit in the team well, had a good game.
Luke Martin - 11pts, 6rebs, 4ast. Solid game in 20+ mins.
Luke Kendall - 9pts, 8rebs, 4ast, 5stl. Wasn't expecting much from this guy, but he impressed me with his composure. Brought the ball up floor a lot and didn't seem bothered. Knew when/when not to take shots and was reliable on defence.
Brett Wheeler - 7pts. Lack of stats doesn't show the intangibles he provided. Decent game.
Thomas Mobley - 6pts (2/12fg). Only played 24mins. Very athletic and got to the rack with some nice moves but was unlucky to finish off on a few. Got a mammoth tomahawk on Brannen's mug, then caught a huge two-handed oop off Bruton/Martin (can't remember). Is a 2/3, and with some people saying the Kings should go for a bigger player, I honestly didn't think he was a bad fit for the team. Time will tell.
David Barlow - 2pts (1/8fg), 5rebs. Showed he had the smarts, just didn't finish off.
Overall the Kings shot 46%fg, 43%3pt, 44%ft.
BRISBANE
Kevin Freeman - 23pts, 9rebs. Showed an apparent improvement in jumpshot. Kings made a point of clamping down on his moves to the bucket, so he was forced to take a few more jumpers than he would've liked.
Bobby Brannen - 20pts, 10rebs. A brute. Had his way with a number of Sydney defenders, and hit a lot of jumpers too.
Stephen Black - 19pts, 5rebs, 6ast, 6to. Played 42mins, highest of anyone on court. Looks set to have another good season.
Daniel Egan - 16pts, 10rebs. Despite a few ill-conceived jumpshots, had a good gam. Rebounded and hustled well, and had a huge two-handed tip dunk in traffic in the 4th. Looks to figure strongly in this season's rotation.
Ben Castle - 6pts, 7rebs. Strong start to game then went quiet.
Adam Darragh - 6pts. Decent cameo. Bruton picked on him a fair bit when they matched up. Whoever said they would prefer Darragh to Rucker is a goose but =)
Derek Rucker - 3pts, 4rebs, 6ast. Never looked to score in the game. Not taking much from his performance as he is didn't figure too much in games last pre-season (and early in the regular).
Peni Nasalo - 4pts. Would have liked to have seen him play more than the 5 mins.
Jason Eversteyn - 2pts, 6rebs. Never seen or heard of this guy before tonight's game. Comes from same club as Mick Hill. Mammoth of a bloke, but that's about where it stops.
Miles Pearce - 0 pts. Only played 5 mins, never got a chance.
Brad Williamson - 0 pts, only played 48 seconds.
Overall the Bullets shot 48%fg, 35%3pt, 64%ft.
GAME NOTES
Telling factor of the game: Brisbane 25 turnovers, Sydney 15.
Crowd of appx 800 at game. Having the Broncos play at the same time didn't help, but then again the Broncos only had 31,000 at their game.
Mick Hill on crutches. Nothing major apparently.
Thalo didn't suit up for the Kings, not sure why. He was with the team however.
Not much else to say that hasn't been said. Just a typical pre-season game. Few good plays for the crowd, so at least the game wasn't (rather naughty word) boring.
Sixers top Breakers

The Adelaide 36ers have survived a last-quarter surge from the New Zealand Breakers to pull away for a 106-94 victory in the opening match of the 2004-05 Philips Championship at Trusts Stadium, Waitakere, on Wednesday night.
The Sixers were led by Dusty Rychart, who opened with a couple of early three-pointers and hit 12 of his 25 points in the first term, and Brett Maher who finished with 19.
Willie Farley, new signing David Cooper and youngsters Oscar Forman, Darren Ng and Jason Williams also made significant contributions.
For the home side, new import Shawn Redhage was very impressive as he took it to the Adelaide defence with a game-high 27 points, Aaron Olson added 21, while Mike Chappell had 16 and Ben Pepper 13 points.
Adelaide was one or two baskets ahead for most of the first half, leading 29-27 at quarter time and only stretching the margin to five at the main break (52-47) when Jason Williams hit a three with the last score of the half.
But the visitors came out with the first couple of baskets of the second half to quickly open up a nine-point break, and the difference hovered around double figures for the remainder of the third period, with the 36ers up 80-71 at the last change.
The Breakers started the final period far better and an eight-point run saw them close the gap to five points, but then Maher hit a steadying three, triggering an Adelaide run that put the result beyond doubt.
The 36ers now head to Townsville for a clash with the Crocodiles on Saturday while the Breakers have a bit of time to regroup before their next match, another home fixture against the Sydney Kings on Sunday October 10.
Adelaide 36ers 106 (Rychart 25, Maher 19, Forman 11)
New Zealand Breakers 94 (Redhage 27, Olson 21, Chappell 16)
@ Trusts Stadium, Waitakere, 29/9/2004.
