yup typical MJ behavio, playing basketball for fun. what a fucking asshole. they should arrest him for picking up a ball after he retired. dont he know his life is over now? i mean he was good and now he is old so he better stop playing all together. he needs to start playing bridge or something.
at Hoops Gym in Chicago…by Cyrius
So this past week and half I haven’t been on much at real gm as much, as I went on a trip to Chicago. I was visiting some family, cousins and friends. For the first few days, it was just went around site seeing, and shopping, clubbing, stuff you don’t really care to hear about.
Finally Sunday (Last week rolled around), and my cousin surprises me and gets 2nd ROW seats right to the Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Red Sox game. It’s sold out, and it’s on ESPN. We sat right beside the Boston dugout. But how she got the SEATS, Eddy Curry hooked us up. I got to give props for Eddy hooking up us like that. That was a wicked night.
But on to the main story and the point of this thread. So mid week rolls around, and my cousin who just so happens to WORK at HOOPS gym, was telling me about all the stuff going on. How Juan Howard, Paul Pierce has been in. How Finley comes and workouts out with Tim Grover. So I’m like wow, can you hook it up so I can come and just see what happens, she says sure. I get in. She was telling me you should have came in June (and I’m like yeah ofcourse the NBA DRAFT stuff was happening then, I told her next year )
Anyways so finally she asks Tim if I can come and watch, and chill with the players. Tim says sure, as long as I don’t ask for any autographs or take any pics anytime after 12. So be it. I get there around 12-1ish.
I grab a folding chair, and prop it right on the main basketball court. Only a few guys there right now, I guess most are eating lunches, getting ready for the scrimmages. Who I do see is Andre Igoulada, working on his shot. The man is pretty built, I mean he has a bit more to add, but he’s pretty defined and strong. He’ll look to have like Ron Artest type body in no time I’m sure. He was working on his shooting with 2 coaches. His shot was hit and miss, he was making the college 3’s with ease, but going to NBA 3’s range was a bit of struggle, clanking a lot of his shots. But it’ll come, and it’s encouraging he was one of the few working on his game. He’s also a cool guy.
On the other end, I saw Keyon Dooling working on his shot, and Corey Benjamin. 2 PM when is the Games/Scrimmages start. So as it approached 2, I see all these NBA balers coming in. Antoine Walker, he pretty tall and big, but also in pretty good shape, he goes and chat with a few of his “Boys”. Then a few more guys show up, I see Ben Gordon roll in, followed by Chris Duhon. They went to a basket, and worked on some short range shots. Some bigs came in next, Steven Hunter, Nazr Mohammed, Marcus Fizer (He just watched didn’t play), a HAWK big but I didn’t recognize him (he had on all hawks gear, looked somewhat young, African American descent) Not any of the rookies they had drafted. They all went and stretched a bit.
Then I saw Shaun Livingston come in, he had his hair out like an afro. First thing you notice is he’s pretty tall, but he’s no more than 175-180 at best. He looks like Jalen Rose in build, really skinny, and probably not even as defined as him at this point. He was doing some stretching.
Then Corey Maggette, he walked right by me, I said what’s up, gave a dap. He’s pretty friendly, and man is he built, he’s thick and cut. Q Rich followed behind, and they were chatting it up. His girlfriend/fiancée Brandy was in the house, and she was looking fineee, but man is she skinny, get the girl a meal. She’s looking like Olson Twin thin.
Then a bunch of guys came like Eddy Curry, and a few of his friends, and a few other balers, who were fairly big, but seemed to me be scrubs, cause I didn’t recognize them, eventually I figured them out, but I forget their names.
In the midst of all this, to the left of me, I see MICHEAL JORDAN, and I’m like Whoa, cause I was thinking to myself as I was heading to Hoops wouldn’t it be cool if I got to see Jordan at the gym, but then I figured he’d be relaxing at home or at a golf course. So I didn’t expect it.
As I starred at him I was like NAH it can’t be Michael Jordan, he seems a skinnier, and in better condition than the Jordan we all last saw, with the Wizards. I was like the old Jordan was fatter, heck he was playing PF. This Jordan looked more like Chicago bulls Jordan in terms of build. So I was like wow this guy looks a lot like Jordan but it can’t be him, and what the heck would he be doing playing at hoops gym. But as I watched him, he did all the Jordan stuff, the fade ways, and stuff; I was like WOW its Jordan.
First thing he looks to be in better shape than old Jordan, he didn’t have any knee braces or anything, and he seemed to be moving good as well. He did lose a bit of his muscle tone, but seemed to me in better shape than in comeback #2. I joked to my cousin, saying well looks like Jordan is planning a comeback. (LOL then the next day I see the article about Jordan maybe coming back). If he does, he’s got a ways to go, but I think he’ll be in a better playing weight. (He was guarding at times Walker, Maggette, Igoulada,) and he definitely could hang with the young boys.
Anyways 2 o’clock rolled around, and it was game time. Tim Grover called out names for teams, each team had a rookie. Games went up to 7 DEAD, with Real NBA refs calling fouls. If a foul was committed, it just a possession of ball (like if you were playing street ball), no free throws. There was a shot clock of 24 and all the standard NBA rules, travels, over and back, etc.
Team 1 was the best team in my mind, it had Shaun Livingston at PG, that scrub SG I was talking about who was working out with Keyon dooling, Corey Benjamin (Wow he was hitting all his shots, anything inside the 3 was automatic for this guy), Maggete, some PF scrub, and Steven Hunter.
Team 2, was Kenyon Dooling, Igoulada, A. Walker, the Hawk big man I didn’t recognize at PF, and Nazr Mohammed.
Team 3 (I called all Chicago) cause it was Ben Gordon, Q Rich (only non Chicago player), Michael Jordan, some guy, and Eddy Curry. With Duhon on the bench.
Team 1 vs. Team 2 first. All games were competitive; it isn’t a charity game where guys are throwing down crazy dunks, and No D. There were hard fouls, aggressive D, like you’d see in a real game, probably a bit more, because you can’t foul out. So basically if a guy went by you, you were getting fouled.
They all played each other. Andre Igoulada threw down some Sick Dunks, getting some Ohhhhh from players and people watching.
I’d say the best PLAYER was easily Maggette, he shot the ball extremely well, passed, played solid d, and absolutely CROWNED Nazr Mohammed, with a SICK jam right over him (As Nazr tried to go for a block), and fouled him but it still didn't stop him. Q Rich was like “UH oh, uhhhhhh ohhhhhh” from the sideline…LOL. Funny stuff.
The next Best player in my mind was Shaun Livingston probably. Actually not Shaun Livingston, but Steven Hunter, laugh if you will. But this guy is legit 7 footer, and was playing aggressive. He demanded the ball down low, made some good post moves, and wasn’t hesitant. Completely the opposite of what you saw of him with ORL. The few times he was hesitant, he traveled once, and the other time, clanged a shot, all the rest were made baskets and and1’s. Plus he played good solid D, blocking some shots, gobbling up rebounds. Phx may have something, it’ll just depend what Steven Hunter shows up.
Definitely the best Rookie was Shaun Livingston. This guy was sick, I’d almost put him right there with Magette but they were in the same team, and Mags made him look good as well cause he made his shots. So Livingston got some easy assists. Anyways this guy is just so good, the way he brings the ball up the court, knows when to push and went to ease up, seemed like he was a veteran. He made some just plain DIRTYYY passes, that you can tell why all the SCOUTS are on high on him. He just got some sick handles, and court vision. He’s gonna make Maggette, and brand look good when he develops. He was also taking Ben Gordon off the dribble, just blowing by him, so it seems he got speed to. This didn’t happen all the time, as he stayed at top of the key passing, and occasionally driving. He also used his height well. He went inside at times, and posted up the guard (Ben Gordon) covering him and getting offensive rebounds with his height and length, and get easy buckets that way. He also was decent on D, staying with guys, but Ben Gordon was blowing past him, but I can say Ben Gordon was blowing by anyone who was on him. But Shaun Livingston recovered and blocked a few of Ben Gordon shot, or had him change what he was going to do.
His weakness: NO shot what so ever, he wasn’t even making a pull up free throw shot. Right now he’s all passing and inside and nothing else. And his other main weakness, he’s Weak. He’s not defined at all, and needs some serious weight. As at times, he’d get by his defender, and have an easy look, and the opposing team would foul, and he wouldn’t be able to finish. Where as maggette he’s so strong, he’d absorb the contact, and finish the play with a lot of and1’s, like the Dunk on Nazr, which was an and1.
But these two things are easily correctable and can be done with weight training and dedication. It won’t surprise me if Livingston like some say, turns out to be the Best player in the draft. He reminds me right now of a Jalen Rose, with better passing ability, and handles, court vision, but not NEARLY the shooting ability, or the veteran savy of Jalen Rose.
Another player who was impressive was Andre Igoulada. He definitely needs to work on his shot, but he made some jumpers, and was constantly putting pressure on the d, by driving on them. Reminds of VC first year, when he was all drives, and no shot. Except I think Andre is a bit more developed than VC was muscle wise. His D was pretty strong, staying with Maggette and Q, and at times pressure hard to force turnovers, which he was successful. This guy reminds me basically Ron Artest with VC like athletic ability all wrapped in one. Pretty good combination, with some hard work, he’ll probably make a lot of Raps fans regret even with VC playing ahead him we took Aruajo (Need) over Talent in Andre, and he’s definitely got that.
Ben Gordon, his shot was off and he wasn’t finishing, he didn’t impress me as much. Maybe it was an off night for him. He’s pretty quick, and took whoever guarded him off the dribble at will. He got pretty good handles as well. He puts so much pressure on the D, as he constantly attacking, driving inside, causing big’s to rotate over to help. He reminds me of Baron Davis, or Steve Francis in how there always driving towards the basket, and drawed some fouls on guys. I sitll think he'll be great next to Hinrich, instead of mainly playing the point. But he was handling the point for "Team Chicago" alot of the game.
Duhon when he came in for Ben Gordon, it seemed to me the offense ran better, and smoother. He knew who to give the ball to, right at the perfect spot, But his knock is true; his shot was off all game.
Q rich game was alright, but he wasn’t making his shots. He looked good at times and not good at times either. I guess he’s spending too much time with Brandy.
And the man Jordan, like I said above he looked pretty good, he was playing more of a coach on the floor, telling guys where to go, and passing the ball, giving guys looks, rather than looking for his, he took I think 3 shots in all of the games. He made 2 of them. He was very vocal, yelling for the ball, telling guys where to go, yelling at EDDY…lol Funny story:
One play I believe Ben Gordon got stripped of the ball, (it was a foul, but no call) Eddy was the only guy back. So Jordan yelled FOUL, it was a close game I believe 5-4 (for the other team), But Eddy didn’t foul hard, he just fouled the guy, and ofcourse the guy made the basket. Jordan was obviously ticked off and says “Come ON EC….when I say foul, FOUL the guy!” something along those lines.
Shortly afterwards (I don’t think it was related but funny nevertheless), Eddy curry was traded to the other team for Steven Hunter…LOL.
But even though Eddy seemed a bit lazy on D, I was impressed buy his post moves, and in the SHAPE he’s in. He’s in real good shape, best I’ve ever seen him, and I think he’s around 285 lbs. He’s got Grover working on him, and he’s got his own personal chef.
In the last game, Jordan hit the game winning bucket with his patent move, in the last game, it was tied 6-6 and then a thing with his finger, like (bang bang gun motion), and said “That’s a WRAP!”.
What a way to end the day at hoops gym.
Players went off, Q iced his knees, and hand. Livingston iced his knees. In fact almost everyone I saw iced various body parts, usually their knees.
Except Ben Gordon, and Igoulada, who went straight back on the court and worked on there shot. Igoulada was working on head fake, and shoot, and head fake, drive a few steps and pull up and shoot. Ben gordon was working on his long range outside shot. Nice to see the work ethic in those two. Unlike Livingston, who went straight to the showers after icing his knees.
All the games were competitive, and people were vocal, going to the refs, yelling at them, like what that’s a foul, or no way that was “all ball”, etc.
