Absolutely. Their rivalry will need to see many more significant matchups before it can take its place in NBA lore as Wilt vs Russell and Bird vs Magic have. But I'm sure the NBA marketing machine would love to see LeBron vs Melo become this decade's great rivalry.

magius wrote:anyway in answer to andrew's question, i dont think so no, only because both magic and larry were special, and I think only bron of the two has the potential to reach that kind of special. I would like to see more of a duncan-garnett rivalry in the coming years as their two respective teams look set to meet each other often in the western finals. Or maybe duncan-yao? garnett-tmac could happen.

Garnett/Duncan is certainly a more established rivalry and one that is more comparable to the matchups of yesteryear since they seem destined to lock horns in the playoffs on a regular basis over the next few years. But with all the hype surrounding LeBron and Melo as well as the fact their teams are on the rise and they'll be around after KG and Duncan are gone (most likely), the NBA is more likely to push them rather than an established matchup.

Actually the Big Dog comparison is a very common one. Both are mostly just mid-ranged shooters. People forget so quickly how good the Big Dog was in his early years and how bad a rep he has gotten for being a cancer and ballhog, both which are warranted. 'Melo's game is very similar to Robinson's (and so his propensity to put him shots is too), but IMO 'Melo will have a better career statwise.

no i didnt. Theres a reason i put glenn robinsons rookie statistics. Let me state it clearly: Glenn Robinson, at 20/21, was generally the same player Carmelo Anthony, at 19/20, is. Thus is it not logical/acceptable to intelligently deduce that in three years time Carmelo Anthony will be the same player Robinson became 3 years following his own rookie campaign? I am not guaranteeing it, no one can tell the future. But, that said can you readily discount the fact that it is at the very least a very likely possibility given the history and the similarities between the players compared?

Well it is possible, but it's also possible that lebron has reached his prime too.. just like penny reached his when he was in his 3rd season. I just don't see it happenening.. and also, if you read what i said in an earlier post, it might make more sense to you: " can see melo, if he continues to have this ego and drive, he might become one of the alltime greats.. "
Glenn Robinson faded after the conference finals with philly in 2001. Carmelo is a winner, and I can't see him (or his game) going down the same track simply becuase glenn robinson stopped playing hard.

2001? that was like 7 years into his career already. I guess you could say the same thing about penny vs lebron, but you wouldnt have the almost eery similar numbers or the similarity in game to back it. Ego and drive are undefinable, everyone says their favourite player has drive, and I guess if you think egos a good thing that too :D Anyway, neither of us really know whats gonna happen, but I still think that melo will be the next glenn robinson, though he may average a couple more points throughout his career when all is said and done. He will not be a top 5 player in the league.
