I am so pissed off about Dwight Howard's "dunk". Last year I really felt bad for him because his sticker dunk was sooooooooo tight, and the judges didn't realize what happened. But his superman "dunk" wasn't a dunk as we have discussed.. I don't get why they didn't make him redo it since he just threw it in. He was clearly like 5 feet away from the rim he wasn't close to grabbing the rim. although, I've never seen anyone throw it in the basket that hard before

Yes. That's why it was a dunk that looked amazing.

Sorry I meant to say throw threw the basket that hard without grabbing the rim (i.e dunking it). HE acted like nothing was wrong either haha

that was obviously intentional.
i think he wanted to be closer to the basket to the point where he can look down into the hoop while he's dunking it. but it went in and everybody cheered so he went with it.

Amazing, yes. Dunk, technically not.

While this year's competition clearly was entertaining, the one and only dunk that stands out for me was Dwight's first finals dunk. It was the most creative and original I've seen in a while, the others... meh. I'm getting tired of people hiding another jersey underneath... plus some college guy already did that superman shirt thing a couple of years back. Dwight di earn to win it but he carried the momentum from his first two dunks and Green would had no chance whatever he had done in the finals because of that.

I'm really disappointed with Moon. I hoped that he would be one of the more techical dunkers out there but well... maybe next year. I'm still waiting for someone in the NBA to pull of that 360 between the legs + 540 and 720 dunks. Enough gimmicks.

Thu Feb 21, 2008 9:39 am

I have to admit I enjoy the gimmicks but I know what you mean. They are in danger of getting out of hand when there's still creative things with the leap and the ball itself (like a 360 between-the-legs) that haven't been done yet.

the problem with the dunk contest still remains in the voting. the so called judges will give one player a 45 then someone who does a much easier dunk but gets the crowd yelling more a 50. however, i dont really have a suggestion for a better way to handle it so i guess i wont complain to much about it

In a contest like that, it's probably hard not to listen to the crowd reaction since the whole point is to do something that brings the crowd of their seats.

I'm not sure if they should keep the whole "They dunk, you decide" thing next year though. It worked out better than I thought it would but I kind of prefer the traditional method of the judges scoring the dunks throughout the contest, even with the controversial decisions that have been made through the years. I know the dunk contest is supposed to be for us fans and it's meant to be fun but if they're going that route, maybe they should get rid of the judges all together.

They should work harder to find judges who aren't aspiring video game reviewers, and understand a 1-10 scale has more options than 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Also, they should bring in four year olds from the stands and have the players describe the dunks beforehand to these kids and have the kids pick which dunk to do. And then not tell the players they have to perform the other dunk as well, no matter what they want to do.

And the rim should be on fire.

Then finally, the dunk contest will be back.

Yes to those two. I'm actually surprised Dwight didn't do rim of fire this year. I guess he is saving it for his title defense. Of course, he would probably throw it in again.

The dunk contest won't be back until somebody does cartwheels and backflips onroute to dunking the ball with their feet off of an alleyoop.

After that happens, it won't be back again until somebody dunks it with their chin.

I want to see someone to a double dunk like in NBA Street Homecourt.

The dunk contest has became more entertaining this time around. The more bizzare, the better. A FSN reporter who interviewed Rudy G. says that he's returning next year with a 'Spiderman' suit.

That's a bit too bizarre for me. Besides, that alone isn't being very creative in terms of dunking; it's just wearing a costume. If he swings from the rafters, somersaults and throws it down (with the rim on fire, as Ben suggested), then we're talking.

Fri Feb 22, 2008 9:28 am

I'm surprised nobody mentioned how mentally retarded Gerald Green is in the interviews with Cheryl Miller. Holy crap, he definitely barely passed high school.

Fri Feb 22, 2008 9:50 am

he doesnt look like the sharpest tool in the shed

Maybe his missing finger is stuck in his brain? [/Simpson's reference]

Lamrock93 wrote:I guess he is saving it for his title defense

Dwight said he was retiring from the dunk contest when he was interviewed just prior to winning the event. So no title defense. Mission accomplished, he won the contest. He is well aware of the excellent judging that's why he won't return.

Coincidentally I was also thinking the same thing that one of the participants might think of a way to top Dwight's Superman shot. But I thought it would still be boring if he would rappel straight down to the rim and dunk the ball while upside-down like Spider-Man.

I think the hype did Gay and Moon in. They were the ones most visible in the internet actively campaigning for themselves os opposed to Dwight's lone video preview. People expected a lot from them and they failed to deliver the hyped goods.

Despite being a disappointment I think Moon will be back next year for the contest. If Moon can overcome challenges to become 27 year old rookie in the NBA, a disappointing past performance will surely not hinder him in joining the dunk contest again.

Hope Nick Young and Rudy Gay joins Moon next year. I also want to see David Lee in the dunk contest.

It would be more fun if he ate a banana, swung and threw his crap in the fan's faces then gave all the men in the crowd a lap dance. That would be truly "gay".

Its not only his speech but his nutty eyes.

I don't like Gerald Green much, but that was sort of a low-blow there :? . Before you ask, yes I know what you were referring to from the Simpsons, but still.

I think when Dwight put the nerf rim up that had amazing potential but he didn't do what I wanted him to do. He should have had a nerf ball in his hand when he went up, taken the ball off the nerf rim, dunked the nerf ball in the nerf rim, and then dunked the real ball. Wouldn't have been any more difficult then what he did do, but would have been a lot cooler.

Sun Feb 24, 2008 7:24 pm

But he has to use both hands to get the real ball off the nerf rim. How would he get the real ball when he's holding a nerf ball in one hand.

Mofo wrote:I don't like Gerald Green much, but that was sort of a low-blow there.

Point taken. Agree.

Sun Feb 24, 2008 7:39 pm

Don't have the real ball sitting up there.

Sun Feb 24, 2008 7:50 pm

Then it's basically a dunk with two balls at the same time which has been done before (I think) and in that case with both real balls and the same rim.

That's what I figured he was going to do as well but what he did was more emphatic and slightly less gimmicky.

I don't think it would have mattered by that point. Howard's first dunk of the final round clinched it, if the Superman dunk/layup hadn't already.
