Well, he's generally listed at 6'11" but even if he's just barely 6'10", he's a lot closer to seven feet than Gerald Green or Nate Robinson. In any case, the dunk itself wasn't out of the ordinary and that's what resulted in the low score. As I said, the sticker was original and creative but the dunk was fairly pedestrian, at least by dunk contest standards and what Dwight Howard is capable of.

It's not unlike Corey Maggette's dunk in the 2001 contest where he performed a complete somersault before continuing his run and dunking home an alley-oop attempt. It was an impressive and original sequence but the dunk wasn't anything special (though it was emphatic) and thus didn't get a 50.

Chicago finished with a quicker time but Ben Gordon attempted a shot out of order leading to a disqualification.

He and Candice Dupree shot at the same time and no one knew which of the two balls actually went in. Had to go to instant replay :D .

Did anyone else feel like the dunk contest is getting much shorter? Gerald only had to do four dunks to win - didn't Vince do considerably more than four in 2000? Can't remember.

I think Iguodala from last year would have won like he should have won last year....I would've like to have seen Green save his first two dunks for the Finals....ahh well, shit happens....I like the Dee Brown dunk as he added the fact he was jumping over Nate Robinson, which was kind of mocking what Nate did to Spud the previous year....Green first dunk was good too....Howard definitely deserved better....but yeah, Tyrus Thomas was a disappointment, David Lee would've been a better choice (Y)

A few comments on the dunk contest. I really actually liked the judging this year, (even though I felt Dwight got screwed, more on that in a minute.) I think they usually give out too many 50's. The problem has been that someone does a dunk and gets and early 50. That means that someone could come up with a dunk way better than that and still only get a 50. By judging everything harsh, it leaves more room to really reward someone for a great dunk.

Dwight should have had a great score for his sticker dunk. The thing that made it the best was the story behind it. Rumor has it that he wanted the league to move the basket higher for a few of his dunks. It only takes a few seconds to do so. He claimed he was going to do a 360 at 12 ft and between the legs at 11'6. The league denied his request for some retarded reason. Interestingly enough, Nate Robinson also asked if he might be able to get the rim raised.

Unfortunatley, everything ran longer than I expected, and my TiVo didn't record the finals of the dunk contest. I was pissed. So I didn't see Nate Robinsons 8 attempts or whatever it was. After hearing about that, I was even more pissed Dwight didn't get in the finals. Nobody wanted to see Nate do that again.

Personally, I felt the best dunk of the night was Green over Robinson, just for the showmanship of it. That is the kind of creativity the dunk contest needs. We have almost reached the point where seemingly everything has been done, so it seems like it might come down to showmanship.

I also thought it looked like Tyrus Thomas did exactly what he said he would. He showed up and collected his check. Its a shame they didn't invite Flight White or someone else to take his place.

I loved the Tyrus' dunk where he ripped the net off. It was a great dunk.

Best dunk of the night had to have been Gerald's dunk assisted by Pierce off the side of the backboard. As amzing as Green's dunks were, I think he is capable of way more sicker dunks.

Sun Feb 18, 2007 5:49 pm

GG is a good dunker...but this dunk contest was yawner overall. Off the side looked cool but last year's Iguodala dunk off the back of the backboard had a much higher degree of difficulty.

Scratch that...some of the dunks Iguodala throws down in games are better than these.

Sticker dunk was awesome...but Dwight wasn't going to win anyway.

Sucky Dunk Contest
Kapono fan is allowed to have another reason to boast about him.
Half-hearted skills challenge
Old people missing 3's
Barkley vs Bavetta FTW.

Rookie Challenge was nice.

I loved Nate's expression when Green jumped over him. Can you say "Ayeeeeeeeeee!!"

I believe the judging was fair for the most part. You have two hard to impress judges, MJ, and Dr. J. You have two easier to impress judges, Kobe and VC, and Dominique seemed to be the intermeditate judge. I think most scores were fair, maybe Dwight deserved a little extra for the sticker dunk, but he probably would have got more points if it were his first dunk. Maybe he should have had the basketball placed on top of the backboard and jumped up, grabbed it and dunked it.

I think there are plenty of dunks that can still be done. There are some streetballers out there who have performed a 720 and a double reverse windmill. I think we are all waiting for the players with the athletic ability, enough game to make it to the nba, and make incredibly creative and difficult dunks like the between the legs twice dunk and under the legs dunk that we have seen in the Live series.

Sun Feb 18, 2007 8:37 pm

Andrew, what you are saying about Dwights dunk is the reason it should have won. It was entertaining.

I feel like I speak for the majority when I say that no one wants to see Nates fucking smug ass piece of shit smile when he finally gets his regular dunks in, just because he is short.

The sticker dunk was fucking awesome, even if the 'dunk' wasnt that great, everything else that went into it was...

Sun Feb 18, 2007 8:47 pm

yep, I concur with Laxation, Nate shouldn't have been in competition....only reason he was is because he duped Iguodala....I'm glad Iggy didn't go in competition after NBA robbed him....

I will admit Nate did one good dunk, his first one which did deserve the score of 45. He was full extended, the hang time & form was great on it. The rest of his dunks were crap. Where's Brent Barry when you need him, he woulda won on this night :P

Sun Feb 18, 2007 9:22 pm

the sticker dunk was more a protest as he was wanting the ring heightened to 12ft for a 360 dunk and 11.5ft for a between the legs dunk but was denied allowing to have the hoop heightened.

Sun Feb 18, 2007 10:04 pm

Man, nate shouldn't advance to the final round. He still got like 42 (don't know exactly) after 10 tries..Dwight's dunk was crazy. And what was with MJ being so "generous" I'd like to see Dwight, Green, Josh Smith and James White next year (Y)

Damn, I missed it. Is it on youtube?

Just to defend the judges, watch the video, after they put up there scores, Pierce came over and seemed to question the score and it seems they didn't see the sticker.

Sun Feb 18, 2007 11:17 pm

It seemed like Gerald finished off with what Dwight started with. :? So the box and the difference in height was worth a 50?

Sun Feb 18, 2007 11:34 pm

During the contest the anouncers said Howard could dunk on a 12'3" hoop. The guiness record is 12, but there have been unofficail dunks at 12'4". Is Howard capable of breaking the record?

Sun Feb 18, 2007 11:55 pm

The final round sucked (N) Green was a disappointment to me, I thought he would be capable of doing some better stuff. His first one was sick though. And Dwight, that was the dunk of the night imo.

Mon Feb 19, 2007 12:51 am

C'mon, that sticker dunk pwned.

Mon Feb 19, 2007 2:27 am

Great dunkers,yet bad judges. still,nice saturday,I can't wait for the ASG :$

Mon Feb 19, 2007 3:05 am

This was a slam dunk contest.

Mon Feb 19, 2007 3:10 am

Dwight just showed he has a sense of humour with that sticker dunk.

I wonder if Tyrus will last with the Bulls with that kind of attitude?
I hope the Bulls trade him to another team that will give his paycheck.

Mon Feb 19, 2007 3:48 am

you got dat right Cy, i dont think we'll ever see a contest better than '00 :|

i was hoping that GG would have thrown down a BTL over that table, that would have been impressive
