I agree that's a huge factor right there, no one really seemed into the contest apart from Nate Robinson and the crowd couldn't get into it as a result.
So much has been done in the contest that there is a definite element of "seen it before" looming over all the competitors, but as we've all said already, it didn't seem like this year's field really tried. Looking back at some of my favourite dunks in recent years, I thought Dwight Howard's tap off the backboard following the lob and lob off the back of the glass for the windmill demonstrate some of the creative things that can still be done (much more than phone booths, capes and dunks where the player doesn't come close to touching the rim, instead making the world's most powerful layup). There's still new twists on old dunks, which is what they should be trying for if they really want to impress.
Scrap most of the format, but keep the current time limits and replacement rules. I think it allowa players the freedom to try crazier things without penalty, something this year's field certainly didn't take advantage of. Invite six competitors that are keen to compete and have demonstrated a lot of flair on their dunks; if they can get some big names, so much the better. Have three dunks per round, top three advance to the Finals. Eliminate all fan voting - again, what's the point of having a final round if people can vote before any dunks in the final round have been attempted? - and make use of the judges throughout.
