Garnett stretches his range
BY RICK ALONZO
Pioneer Press
MANKATO, Minn. — Here's something that might be of interest to Timberwolves fans who wish all-star Kevin Garnett would post up on the low block and stay there.

The 7-foot Garnett spent time this summer practicing his three-point shooting.

No joke.

"It's coming (along)," Garnett said this week. "I'm not going to rely on it, because you all know I'm from the block. The block is what got me here. I'm going to stay with the block. But that's not to say I'm shy about shooting it. I've been working on it, working on it really hard, but I can't forget about that block."

Garnett was perhaps the team's best three-point shooter during a drill earlier this week in training camp. He had streaks of four and five in a row, outshooting most guards in the drill.

No one knows how much Garnett actually might shoot threes in games once the regular season starts Nov. 1. Dwane Casey won't be calling plays for Garnett to step behind the arc for an open shot, but the coach has confidence in his franchise player.

"His outside shooting has improved," Casey said. "He's brought a three-point game into the year. That's something new he brought in. He's shooting it consistently. I don't know how much he's going to use it, but he's worked on it."

Garnett is a career 29.7 percent three-point shooter during his 11 years (152 for 511). His best season was in 1999-2000, when he made 30 of 81 attempts (37 percent). His most attempts came in 2001-02 (116), but last season he shot only 30.

Rotations: The first, second and third teams appeared clear early this week in training camp. Kevin Garnett, Trenton Hassell, Mike James, Ricky Davis and Mark Blount were the starters; Marko Jaric, Troy Hudson, Mark Madsen, Eddie Griffin and Justin Reed the backups; and Randy Foye, Craig Smith, Bracey Wright, Vin Baker, Paul Shirley and Tyrone Ellis the third-stringers.

Yeah...it's great that he will have more confidence in his three pointer this season. The truth is though he has always had good range. He consistently hits 22 footers so what is another step backwards? I wish he would try to get a sky hook in his game but hey...whatever works.

outshooting most guards in the drill

That part is what bothers me (or even Riot).

I don't think it should be reason for concern, I don't see KG going the Antoine Walker route with his three point attempts. More likely it will just be another weapon in his arsenal that he'll pull out if the opportunity arises.

he's in New Zealand & they don't play on college 3pt line, they play international 3pt line in high school....so high school 3's are 22 foot jumpers....although, you still can't really compare that to a 25 foot jumper....

Lol Rasheed. Garnett will be unstoppable if he develops a consistent jump. He would be awesome if he developed one like dirk.

Not so worried about him going Walker on me, more worried about the chance he may be the best shooter on his team. :( Doesn't say alot for the guards.

Wow even KG is thinking about using the 3... Shaq didn't lie about the future of the big man in the NBA being Dirk.

Thats really worrying if you care about Minnesota...unless he just got really dam good. Then its worrying for anyone else.

I got like 73 before I stopped counting the other day. I probly kept going for an hour or two after that though.

The 3pt stuff is nice and all but why the hell is Randy Foye in the '3rd team' of the rotation? I know he's a rookie and all but he should be like 6th or 7th man.

that was just one of those rare days that comes about once, well ever....on numerous occasions I'd hit 10-12 in a row, but it always helps if you got someone rebounding & passing you the ball when you're in rhythm....but yeah, it does tire you out....the day I hit 31, I couldn't believe it....that was one of those moments that makes you love basketball....

but yeah, on average, if I might hit 4-5 in a row if I get hot, miss one or two, make adjustments....most 3pters that I've hit in a real game is 6, which I've done twice....I've hit 5 3pters on a few occasions too....

I tihnk he should be starting or at least 6th Man
Blount
KG
Davis
Hassell
James
are probable starters but Foye could easily replace Hassell there

Nah, I think Foye should come of the bench for the simple fact that Hassell is the only defensive back up to KG, without him, they have very little outside defense
