Random Statistics Talk

Postby The X on Tue Jan 17, 2006 10:12 pm

So I was randomly checking how some of the leading scorers this season and was surprised to see such high PPG totals from various players....I'm not talking about team scoring here, just individual scoring....

The 2 things that jumped out at me the most were:

1) There are 3 players all averaging over 30ppg (Kobe - 34.3ppg, Iverson - 33.2ppg, LBJ - 31.1ppg). I honestly can't remember the last time that there was that many players averaging over 30ppg this late in the season. Can anyone care to enlighten me?

2) Wally Szczerbiak (20.5ppg), Ricky Davis (20.0ppg), Mike Bibby (19.9ppg), Tony Parker (19.4ppg) and a few others are well up on their career averages.

anyone else have any thoughts on these or any other statistical trends going on in the NBA?!?

I wasn't expecting Wally to do so well this season. When I started my dynasty I was saying how unrealistic he was putting up numbers coz he was scoring more than 20 on the average but then I saw his stats in real life

sometimes real life has a habit of following NBA Live, whether it's for the good or the bad....at least this time it was for the good (Y)

I have a feeling rebounding numbers individually might be down this season in comparison to others. I'll check into it later.

As far as the 30ppg scorers go, I don't know about mid-season stats but end of season these are the closest recent ones I can find:

2002-2003

McGrady: 32.1ppg
Kobe: 30.0ppg
Iverson: 27.6ppg
Shaq: 27.5ppg

2000-2001

Iverson: 31.1ppg
Stackhouse: 29.8ppg
Shaq: 28.7ppg
Kobe: 28.5ppg
Vince: 27.6ppg
Webber: 27.1ppg

1989-1990

Jordan: 33.6ppg
Malone: 31.0ppg
Ewing: 28.6ppg

1987-1988

Jordan: 35.0ppg
Dominique: 30.7ppg
Bird: 29.9ppg

The last time three guys ended the season averaging 30 per + was 1981-1982:

George Gervin: 32.3ppg
Moses Malone: 31.1ppg
Adrian Dantley: 30.3ppg

Kobe Bryant is the highest scoring leading scorer since MJ in the late 80's. That's the only thing apart from Melo averaging 25 ppg.

thanks Jae....I figured that the dynamic trio of MJ, Nique and Bird would have got close one season and that it was a long time since all 3 had finished up that high....

I'm thinking that it will probably end up with Kobe and Iverson above 30ppg, and James just below it as the Cavs rest him a little more towards playoffs and when Hughes gets back and his production drops slightly....

That's what I had thought about starting a topic on.
That's fun though, high scoring of individuals doesnt necessarily seal good basketball games, but is at least entertaining. :D

Higher scoring averages and fewer rebounds might mean for an increase in overall FG%

I'm thinking it could be more likely due to an increase in fouls called and FT's taken and made  just a thought, but I might be on to something :P

Well this is the random statisitcs talk so here are some random statistics I'm going to give.

Darko Millicic is averaging a career low 1.3 ppg. He's career average is 1.6ppg. This year he's increased his turnovers and blocks average to around 0.7 each but previous year it's been around 0.4. He's even averaging a career high 0.4apg. The hype machine has really worked for him this year.

Eddie Curry is averaging a career high in rebounds so far at 6.7rebs a game (previous high was 6.2 in 03-04)

one of my fantasy players here.. more than 66% of James Posey shots are 3pointers. He shoots better from downtown also
FG- 86-204 42.2%
3PT- 68-152 44.7%

damon jones does this too, but his percentage is way lower

And Gilbert is at 29.5. Last time 4 players averaged 30+ was the year where Wil had 50.4 ppg in 48.5 mpg.

Kobe Bryant leads all NBA players in fourth- quarter scoring at just under nine points per game.

LeBron put up another 50+ point game today, but this time it came in a win making the Cavaliers 1-2 all-time when LeBron scores 50 or more.

Amazing...his role is not to score 50. He has to score and lead the team, yes, but with Zydrunas, Larry Hughes, and everyone else, the Cavs are too good to let one player score 50. They are not the Lakers.

idiot Hughes is injured and hvnt played for a long span and Ilgauskas made 2-3 shots in this game. Very nice game from James, regardless. And now his 50+point effort is finally followed by a W.

EDIT:
Jordan: 35.0ppg

Now Kobe is averaging 34.8 per game, but his team has lost 2 in a row after big wins over Shaq and James. P.S. I wonder what's his stats in the month of January?

Kirilenko didn't do much to slow him down, did he?

Although i don't think i saw AK guarding him much past the 1st q?

And is now the youngest player ever to reach 5000 career points.

Whell, another incredible random statistic.

D. Wade 3 point shooting progress in his 3 years n the league:
1st season: 16/53-30%
2nd season: 13/45-29%
3rd season: 4/40-10%
And M. Albert in NBA live says that he has iproved his perimeter shooting since entering the league. :D don't see the progress, or in other words, can't hit, don't shoot.

You have to factor that as the playmaker he's usually the focus on defense and has to take all the bad shots for the team as well, shot clock, end of period heaves, etc..

Look at Ray Allen's shooting %s and someone would say he's a horrible shooter.

But still, that doesn't excuse 4/40...that's tragic.
