No question, it was Kareem's sky hook. Simply devastating. It's a shame more big men don't learn how to use it. Like mid-range shooting, it's become a lost art.

My first thought was Kareem's skyhook before I even entered this thread. I think what makes it so devastating is the fact that hookshots are difficult to block even though it's the most anticpiated move. For example, you can try to anticipate what the Dream Shake will do for its final move, or you can try to push Jordan or put a hand in his face when he attempts the fadeaway, but with the hookshot, if Kareem knows where he is on the court, he can simply go straight up and smoothly guide the ball into the hoop while his opponents try to block it (which doesn't happen very often). Kareem can even use his opponent as leverage to hook it in, which doesn't make room for his man to jump. It's simple, but it's killer.

Bird & McHale's fadeaways were pretty unstoppable.

George Gervin, Jamaal Wilkes & Jack Sikma had weird shooting styles that made it difficult to block their shots, especially Wilkes. He'd bring the ball behind his head, cock his arm and fling it. Most of the time, his shot was money.

I'm a huuuuuge Kobe hater, but I have to admit he has the most unstoppable shot in the league right now, close second being Tracy McGrady and Ray Allen.
Best example is probably the final regular season game like 3 years ago, Lakers vs. Blazers with "Kobe Stopper" ( ) Patterson defending him.

Right now, I'd have to say Ray Allen and Tracy McGrady. McGrady is long and gets up really high on his jumper, so other guards would have a tough time guarding it.

Ray Allen also has a quick and accurate release too.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Peja yet. I think that his shot his pretty much impossible to stop. He's 6'10" and has a very quick release. Ever seen him come off a screen? Two guys up in his face and the 3 is still money.

Right now , I would have to say its KG's Fadeaway . Sky hooks are hard to defend , so i guess that the hardest one to defend of all time . I use sky hooks but the problem is im a SG (5'10) , so if anyone is 3-4 inches taller then me , then forget about it , they can jump high enough and block it.

What makes T-Mac's and Kobe's shots so unstoppable? They were good by all means but how can you say they are more unstoppable than guys with higher percentages. Nash, Miller, and even Carter all have statistically higher percentages. You can't say a low thirties in 3 point percentage is unstoppable which T-Mac and Kobe possess. Obviously they were not stoppable or a lot must have not went in. At first glance maybe I would assume you are talking about clutchness but this isn't the topic of the thread.

Actually, percentage wise they are better, but Tracy McGrady's shot itself is quite good. Its just that he takes a lot of them and most of them are stupid shots anyway.

You can have a shit percentage but still have a good shot. It's just that McGrady has bad shot selection.

The only way to stop a sky hook is to foul the guy. Which isn't really stopping it since you are not supposed to foul other players.

So whatever the hell it was that Artis Gilmore shot must've been the most "unstoppable" shot. Shaq's dunk is pretty close though. (3rd..but how do you block a Shaq dunk? Pray? Cower in fear? Hope Shaq doesn't crush you?) Kareem's shot % is 8th overall, but I guess the sky hook was probably one of the most efficient shots that existed. People also forget Chocolate Thunder's backboard breaking dunks. (He's also high in the FG% list...)

It's really surprising that more people don't try to emulate it or develop their own variations of it. Even a consistent baby hook would be a good bread and butter move for today's big men.

In today's game, Garnett's fadeaway is the most unstoppable shot. He's 7'1" (at least) and jumps and fades. Nigh impossible.

One thing people often get confused about the fadeaway...they think it's jumping backwards. It's not really. It's STEPPING back with your free foot, THEN jumping up. You can't really shoot a fadeaway until you figure that out.

Also, the motion on the skyhook is more like throwing the ball backwards over your shoulder then sideways over your head. Someone else had to explain that to me when I was a teenager.

For the life of me Andrew, I can't figure out why more of today's big men don't develop a hook shot. It would add so much to their game. Aside from Shaq's baby hook, who uses it?

The only way to slow down Kareem was to bump him out of his comfort area, and force him out of his range. Nate Thurmond was great at doing that. Kareem always said Nate was one of his toughest defenders. Moses Malone was no slouch either.
