Sports Update
Suns looking to re-aquire Finley
By Mike Tulumello, Tribune
June 28, 2005
For the second straight year, the Suns are likely to try to convince one of their ex-players to re-join them.

The Suns are set on exploring the possibility of going after Michael Finley on the free agent market, a league source said Tuesday. The Mavericks bought out Finley for $51 million as a way to avoid paying the NBA's luxury tax. A number of teams with expensive contracts are doing the same thing because of a provision in the new collective bargaining agreement.

The Suns could use a shooter now that Quentin Richardson is going to New York for center-forward Kurt Thomas.

The Suns drafted Finley in 1995. He left in December, 1996 as part of the big trade that brought Jason Kidd from Dallas to the Suns.

Yahooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finley can definitely still contribute. And M2J, it doesn't matter if he's older because they won't be giving him a big contract. I hope this happens. It might make up for shipping Nate Robinson along in that 'other trade.'

Seems players get past the age of 25 and they're suddenly old and useless. Finley's only 32 and his numbers are more than decent for the role he's been playing the last couple of seasons. At the amount the Suns would likely be paying him should he sign, he'd be a great addition.

I have to admit, if the Bulls could get him at a reasonable price I'd like to see him go to Chicago. The Suns are much closer to a championship though so with all contract offers being equal he's more likely to choose a team in that position.

Imagine this for one second.....

Cleveland will sign Antoinio Daniels for PG
Resign Ilgauskas and McInnis
Shareef will sign with us
and then if Finley signs....

PG Daniels/McInnis
SG LeBron/Finley
SF Shareef/Jackson
PF Gooden/Varejao
C Ilgauskas/Andriuskevicius

And we are bound to make some more FA noise, we have soooo much salary! 8-)

I don't think Reef will work as an SF

that looks good to me...imagine him at the 3 spot, manu as sg spot, parker at point and duncan, imagine the numbers they'll put up.

All's good in hoping and dreaming, but:

1. Reef stinks when playing SF. He proved that in Portland that's why he ended up being the 6th man. A GREAT light PF , with a loser's mentality. Needs to sign with a contender, not a playoff hopeful, if he knows what's best for him.

2. Luke Jackson must surprise a lot of people if he's going to man the SF/SG spot. More likely, in the unlikely event that Finley signs with the Cavs, he'll start at SF with LBJ at the 3.

3. Lanky-A is years away from contribuiting. He can't even hold his own in the Lithuanian league, much less the NBA. He should be groomed behind Big Z
for at least 2 years before being able to play minutes in the pros.

4. The Daniels/McInnis combo is lacking a true PG touch. They're both SGs trapped in PGs' bodies. The Cavs need a pass-first playmaker... If they manage to sign another Lithuanian, Jasikevicius, as it is rumored that the presence of Big Z and Lanky A is making him favor Cleveland as a potential place to play, then they'll really make some noise... They get a perfect shooter and another selfless leader to compliment LBJ. He's the one they should go after in the FA market.

5. Anderson MUST get more PT... His energy and hustle are much more fitted to the Cavs' needs than Gooden's boring style.

I don't think the Cavaliers would be able to do all of that with their current cap situation.

No, I don't think so either. Especially since JJ is on the top of their wish list (JJ can be LBJ's Pippen -- great defender and all-around player). I hear they're targeting Redd if they can't get JJ. Plus, if Daniels is signed as the PG, no way in hell does McInnis, who was already disgruntled, come back as a backup. I think the Cavs need some tenacious, defensive-minded players who can rebound and while Daniels fits that mold, Shareef doesn't.

He'll start at SF, but LBJ will at the 3? SF and the 3 are the same position.

If the Cavs do get Allen (and I have no idea the reasonableness of that, just saying), I might just have to jump on the bandwagon (even though I still think they need more post presence if they really want to go far).

Man I honestly think that would be one awesome acquisition for the suns! Finley would be perfect for the type of fast pace game the suns play. He'll fit in nicely where Richardson was. Let's hope it goes through. Colin will go nuts I'm sure.
Preparation will only take you so far. After that you've got to take a few leaps of faith.

I meant Finley will start at SG, which is his natural position. "g" and "f" are keyboard adjacent...

I think teh best fit for Finley at this stage would be the Heat. His game would benefit greatly from Shaq's presence as Mike is a rare shooter/slasher combo.

A whole new spin...

"Dallas Morning News - Since the news was broken that the Dallas Mavericks may waive Michael Finley to relieve some financial pressure the team has been flooded with inquries, the Dallas Morning News is reporting. While Finley still may have played his last game as a Maverick, the mechanism for his departure may have changed.

Eddie Sefko is reporting that the Mavs are now looking at other options. President of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said they have been approached with trade possibilities that could accomplish the same thing: provide financial relief for the team, as well as the bonus of acquiring an asset in return.

"Our first choice would be to keep Fin in a Mavericks uniform until he retires," Nelson said. "But as we run through the creative options, there seems to be less and less prospect of that happening. We have heard from a lot of people."

Possibilities, Sefko writes, could include the contract of retired Pacer Reggie Miller or a combination of Scot Pollard and Austin Croshere from the Pacers, Eddie Jones from the Miami Heat , or Finley could head back home to Chicago for the expiring contracts of Antonio Davis and Eric Piakowski.

People should be fired for writing bull shit like that. We are strapped for money in our contract as it is, we will not trade Reggie's contract, and the only thing appealing about Pollard is his big contract.

Such utter and total bullshit. Finley is not coming to Indiana and we don't want him.
