llooks like this new CBA thing is going to affect other players
i think mavs releasing finley would be a mistake since he can still score 20 a game.

Seeing how much those players are owed in salary and the amount of money they'd have to pay in taxes, I'd make the same decisions. I think they'll lose more money by keeping them on the team, than by cutting them.

Look at it as a business. Lose Finley, save around (aprox) 70? Million. Does Dallas really lose that much? It's not as if Finley is their franchise player? The 20 points he can bring to the game can be evenly spread over the younger guys in Dallas. Dirk had an awesome season this past season and lets face it, Finley isn't getting any younger. Dallas won't not make the playoffs by losing Finley. They'll still make profits & not have to owe him 70 orso million dollars.

Business-wise, that's a dream come true. As they've said time & time again, it's a once in a lifetime deal.

christie- back to sac
finley- seattle? indiana? cleveland? Denver?

i know denver is going to pick up someone. They need a SG and finley can fill that void. Any vet interested in winning a championship could just go to miami too haha

The Suns will probably snap one of these kind of guys up with the MLE depending on who they get in the draft.

I can see the Magic releasing Christie, though I don't know about Dallas getting rid of Finley. I understand how it makes sense on the business side of things, but replacing Finley's contribution with the younger guys is easier said than done. Besides, we're talking about Mark Cuban, a guy who'll happily reach for his chequebook when a $500,000 fine comes his way. But if it does happen, it's a great opportunity for some other team.

Oh yeah, forgot about Cuban. I constantly think of Sterling when I think of NBA owners.

I heard about the Mavs possibly releasing Finley on ESPN the other day but I brushed it off. If they release him then I personally think it's a mistake, though if Minnesota can pick him up, and I'm not a Minn. fan, that would really help them as they are having trouble keeping that guard spot in tack. I think Finley replacing Spree will be good for that franchise, especially when Spree is not expected to stay and Fred Hoiberg possibly retiring due to heart problems. My two cents toss on the table

Finely was the supposed "franchise player" of the Mavs at one point wasn't he? It must suck if he was released, Finely is a good player who still has some game left in him. Oh well, more time for Marquis Daniels!

Christie and Houston on the other hand, I can agree with on releasing.

He used to be at some given time. But Cuban is real high on Dirk, why shouldn't he be? This guy can play.

They aren't releasing him because he isn't a worthy player, they're contemplating to release him based on his salary. I'm sure he's still great enough to keep around had it not been for the salary.

With Avery Johnson being the head coach now, Dallas is going to focus heavily on defense, something that Finley does not do very well.

On the other hand, Marquis Daniels is a young guy who can defend and is improving offensively, he was going to take the starting spot sooner or later.

A lot of teams would be intersted in these guys off the bench for a reasonable amount of money. But $18M for Allan Houston off the bench is too much when guys like Ginobli make $6M.

Cuban has a lot of money, but that doesn't mean Finley is worth his salary. Lakers trading Shaq, New York trading Kurt...having deep pockets doesn't mean things are stable, usually the opposite.

Cuban is especially notorious for tinkering with his roster, sometimes too much. A lot of experts thought with Nellie and Nash leading the team this year they would have made a strong run for either the Conf Champs or even further.

The Grizzlies could possibly be looking for Finley since they are looking for a good scorer and Finley does average 20 a game so...

I dont think they would even bother playin in the NBDL, they got enough money that sets them up for the rest of their lives.
IMO, for them its either NBA or non-basketball life.

Finley is one of their best defenders and had been their best defender for years. Dirk doesn't play D, Nash never pleyed D, most of the Mavs have no clue what D is but Finley does. He may not be as good a defender as in the past but he does a good job defensively.

add webber to the list of big name players who might be released :D
Already, the Dallas Mavericks are talking about terminating the contract of--and paying in full--Maywood native Michael Finley. The Knicks are talking about a similar termination with Allan Houston. Both would receive the remaining amount of their contracts, annually more than $15 million.

Other players considered strong possibilities to be released in a similar manner would be Chris Webber in Philadelphia, Jalen Rose in Toronto, Eddie Jones in Miami, Doug Christie in Orlando, Theo Ratliff in Portland and Raef LaFrentz in Boston.

this offseason should be fun. So many players are going to be moving around that were once stars and now are overpaid. I guess Cwebb and Christie can go back to Sacramento for the minimum :)

As expected, Finley's gone.

"Finley and Cuban were in Mexico over the weekend attending the wedding of Mavs equipment manger Al Whitely. Considering his value to the franchise for the last eight seasons, Cuban wanted the opportunity to address the situation with Finley face-to-face. Finley, 33, would be the second member of the former "Big Three" to leave the Mavs in the past year. Steve Nash left for Phoenix via free agency last summer, leaving only Dirk Nowitzki from what was once considered the franchise's core threesome."

As expected, Finley's gone.

But he still will get his due salary, so he just might sign with the LLE or even the minimum for a contender... I believe this clause is going to bring unbalance to the Forc... errr... the league...

Heck, they might all join the Bobcats and we'll have a new favorite in our hands... Now that'd be a coup!
