Tyson Chandler 4 6thmanoftheyear?

I don't see why not? my fave bull deserves some credit right? lately been on a tear offensively (hahah 10ppg or soemthing in the last 4 games) to go along with his already steady def and rebounding...

Ben Gordon is a way bigger reason for the Bulls success than Chandler is...he has improved but hes nowhere the player he is/was expected to be...hes still playing 27 MPG....which is a career high....so its more like a situation where more minutes mean "better" production..

Chandler's been doing a good job off the bench, but if a Bull is going to get the sixth man award it will be Gordon. His offensive firepower in the fourth quarter and impressive numbers for someone who plays just half a game make him a better candidate.

my vote would've gone to stackhouse but he's disappeared the last couple weeks

Donyell Marshall, after his three barrage, and averaging close to 20 PPG lately, he's pushing himself up the ranks.

no doubt tyson deserves credit. he's one of the bulls key players and an impact player off the bench. though defensive minded players seldom win the 6th man award

actually chandler is gordon's equal on the defensive end. many a times, he's come up with a big offensive or defensive rebound or block late in the 4th qtr.

this isn't a more minutes, more production for him. tyson has finally stayed healthy which has resulted in him finding a role and consistent minutes on this team. i'm not sure what kind of player you were expecting him to be, but when he came into the league, he really had no skills on the offensive end or nba strength. a lot of things he did was just based on his athleticism. in fact this guy is still awkward on offense ... regardless, he still scores 7.6ppg on almost 50% and he's quickly becoming a difference maker on defense and that's invaluable to any team...

I've said it before, the 6th man award is bullshit, because the top candidates are rarely ever actual 6th men. Just because they don't start the game does not mean that they are the real 6th option on their team. Most are the 3rd or 4th, and in most cases, average more minutes and get more touches than several starters.

If I could make a change, I would reediefine what the criteria is to be a candidate for the award. First of course, would be that you started less than 20% of the games you played in. Second, probably the most important, is that you do not average more minutes per game than the three most closely related starters. For example, Ben Gordon closest relatable starters would be Hinrich, Deng and Duhon, because he's a tweener pg-sg, and could shift other players to sf. Gordon averages less minutes a night than those players, so he is a valid candidate.
To examine anothe candidate, Ricky Davis, he passes the first criteria, because he has started 15% of his games so far. He badly fails the second criteria, as both Boston's starting G/Fs this year not named Paul Pierce or Gary Payton, mainly Jiri Welsch and Tony Allen, averaged far fewer minute per game than Davis. If you watch Boston's games, it was clear that he was the #2 option behgind Pierce, and the excuse was that he brings energy off the bench. So...if he was to start every game, he would forget how to dunk? Would he turn into Oliver Miller because he didn't get to wear his track suit for 8 more minutes? Its a very cheap excuse, because Boston seems to like the persona he has gained by fooling dumb fans into believing this label they have given him. They managed to rid him of the ball hogging unsportsmanlike player persona he had in Cleveland, and that way, they can get fans mroe interested and get some recognition league wide. Ricky is no 6th man, hes a 3rd man.

The "Real'" 6th man candidates are:

Ben Gordon - CHI
Tony Delk - ATL
Antonio McDyess - DET
Mike James - MIL/HOU
Eddie Griffin - MIN
Darius Miles - POR
Antonio Daniels - SEA

From that group, Gordon is the clear favourite. The only guys who could probably challenge him are McDyess or Daniels.

Well ppl expect him to be a 20-10 guy sooner or later....I know thats stupid.....its quite sill y to expect guys outta HS to make impact during their first year....I think hes starting to understand the game better and well hes goin to get better and who knows maybe he will burst out when hes like 27-28 and be a 20-10 guy......now if only ppl stopped bashing Melo and realised hes still not even 21

There was a while when Tony Allen was injured. Ricky played in the S5 only then! But now he comes off the bench again, in each and every game, you dumbass! He has started only 11 games out of 70. I know what I'm saying when I'm talking about my favourite team and player! Man, even the NBA officially says he IS a 6th man.

i think you just think differently than everyone else on what a 6th man is. its not called the 6th option award, its the 6th man. meaning you start 5 guys and when you look to the bench for your first sub(not foul trouble related) you look at that guy. that is your 6th man.

Maybe next year Miami should start Michael Doleac ahead of Shaq, so the diesel can bring some 'energy' off the bench. Shaq could then play 40 minutes a night, be the #1 option, but still win the MVP and 6th man awards.

OK, then a more realistic equivalent to the Ricky Davis situation would be Pheonix starting Jim Jackson over Shawn Marion.

its obvious the award can be manipulated if you wanted it to. the thing is a coach is not gonna bench a guy just so he can win 6th man of the year.

And Ricky is benched 4 life! He brings the boost from the bench, and is the leading scorer on the bench. Doc has a reason for keeping him there.

But the coach would only be benching him for a few minutes to start the game, then they play as much as the starters. Is there really a reason that Boson started Jiri Welsch before and Tony Allen now, as opposed to Ricky? With Welsch it was apparently his defense, but was he really needed as an above average defender with little scoring ability, just for the first 5 minutes of a game? Even with Allen now, Ricky and him play the same game. Up tempo, slashing no defense energizers, except Davis is has a more developed offensive game. Allen is palying the way that Ricky did in his first years. Davis is clearly the better option, and thats why he plays twice as much as Allen.

I doubt that the coach is not not starting davis because he's trying to get Ricky the award, but I'm starting to think that someone in the Celts organization, whether it be management or Davis himself, that has decided to get some good PR for the team that is still going nowhere this year.

It's the same thing with Wally Szczerbiak and Trenton Hassell, you want defense to start the game then you can bring in that offensive weapon vs. the other teams 2nd unit. Wally can be the focal point of the offense in the 2nd unit where as he would be struggling to get shots off starting with players like Sprewell, Garnett and Cassell.
