My all-time favourite is Dr. J. It doesn't sound very original these days because it's overused, and most nicknames these days are shit (First letter of first name) - (abbreviation of last name) i.e J-Rich. Back when it was created though it sounded cool (Dr. J that is).
Jae is totally right: Nicknames that are just abbreviations aren't that good. For example, "AI" isnt that good of a nickname, but "The Answer" is. "Starbury" isnt good, but "showbiz" is. "MJ" isnt that good, but "air jordan" is great.
But the best of all time is simple: Dikembe Retardo. Pricless
The Admiral, whatever Larry Johnson's nickname was, Shaq Attack was even pretty cool. I think Jordan had the best array of nicknames of any player, Air Jordan, Rare Air etc... although that's expected of the most marketable sports star in history. I mean even Air Canada sounded alot better than "VC". Sir. Charles was another cool name, these days though he'd be "C-Bark"
Dikembe Retardo... boy doesn't he live upto that one lol.
I also like C-Webb (although it isn't anything special, just sounds great), The Mailman, The Glove, The Goods, Ukraine Train, Jay Cee, B-Dizzle, Tru Warrior (Artest), and recently also The Big Fella' (they always say that to Shaq).
