The Phoenix Suns acquired veteran swingman Jim Jackson and a 2005 second-round draft pick today from the New Orleans Hornets in exchange for guard Casey Jacobsen, forward/center Maciej Lampe and rookie forward Jackson Vroman.
“Jim Jackson adds significant depth to our roster and should significantly increase our bench productivity. He is a savvy vet whose game fits our system well,” said Suns President and General Manager Bryan Colangelo.
Jackson, who is currently in his 13th NBA season, owns career averages of 15.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 805 games (646 starts) with 11 teams (Dallas, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Golden State, Portland, Atlanta, Cleveland, Miami, Sacramento, Houston and New Orleans).
An accomplished scorer and three-point threat, Jackson ranks 20th among active players with 12,217 points and 25th with 795 three-point field goals. He has a career three-point field goal percentage of .363 and he connected on a career-high 162 treys last season (6th in the NBA) with the Rockets.
The 6-6, 220-pound guard/forward was traded from the Rockets to the Hornets on December 27, 2004 along with forward Bostjan Nachbar for guard David Wesley, but Jackson did not report and was suspended indefinitely by New Orleans on Dec. 29, 2004. Jackson averaged 13.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 41.3 minutes (4th in the NBA) in 24 games with Houston this season.
The fourth overall selection in the 1992 NBA Draft by the Mavericks, Jackson immediately becomes the elder statesman on the club at the age of 34. Jackson, who was the Big 10 Player of the Year at Ohio State during his sophomore and junior seasons, has averaged 10.1 points and 4.3 rebounds in 30 career playoff games, including 14.8 points and 10.4 rebounds in five postseason games with Houston in the 2004 Playoffs.
The 2005 second-round draft pick acquired from the Hornets is originally from Dallas. Jackson, who will wear jersey no. 21, will not be in uniform for tonight’s game vs. San Antonio.
Jacobsen, who was selected by the Suns with the 22nd overall pick in the first round of the 2002 NBA draft, averaged 5.5 points, 1.8 rebounds and 19.7 minutes in 190 games in two-plus seasons with Phoenix. In 2004-05, the 6-6, 215-pound guard averaged 5.3 points, 1.7 rebounds and 19.2 assists in 40 games.
Lampe, who was acquired by the Suns in an eight-player trade from the Knicks on Jan. 5, 2004, averaged 3.8 points, 2.1 rebounds and 9.3 minutes in 37 games over two seasons with Phoenix. The 6-11, 275-pound second-year forward/center averaged 2.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 7.4 minutes in 16 games this season.
Vroman averaged 1.6 points and 1.3 rebounds in 10 games (one start) this season after he was acquired from the Bulls in a draft day deal on June 24, 2004. Vroman, a 6-10, 220-pound forward, was selected by Chicago with the 31st pick overall in the second round of the 2004 NBA Draft.

Oh man this is great, if they can have him starting, and move Q-Rich to the bench, it would help them a lot.
Sat Jan 22, 2005 9:27 am
Rumours are that Joe Johnson will now be traded for Salembert too
Sat Jan 22, 2005 9:33 am
Yea I heard that, the Suns lineup would then be:
PG - Nash
SG - Richardson
SF - Marion
PF - Amare
C - Dalmbert
That's some mad athleticism in the froncourt. If they trade JJ, Q-Rich would start, but while he's there, it would be good to make Q the energy man off the bench, to improve their bench.
Actually even with young JJ gone it would be smart to start old JJ, and still have Q be the energy man.

thank god he finally got traded... that fucker is on 2 of my 3 fantasy basketball teams and all he's done since he got traded from the Rockets is take a big fatty shit at home. Hopefully he'll bring back those 3 pointers made... which will probably happen in Phoenix.
Sat Jan 22, 2005 10:20 am
Yes, I cant wait to make this deal in my dynasty now
Sat Jan 22, 2005 10:40 am
The Suns currently have 9 players on their roster
Sat Jan 22, 2005 12:55 pm
I kinda like this for NOH too... I mean Jacobsen, Lampe and Vroman are ok I guess... Vroman had some tabs on him coming into the draft, Lampe was seen as something potentially very good too... and Jacobsen can shoot, and stuff.
Sat Jan 22, 2005 1:06 pm
yeah, it's essentially 3 very late 1st Round picks (okay so Lampe and Vroman went in first couple of picks in 2nd) for JJ....not bad, not bad at all....I like the trade for both teams....
Hornets got something for JJ, and each of these 3 players will get a chance to shine (ala Dan Dickau)....
Suns probably weren't going to re-sign Jacobsen I don't think....Suns need some more big man depth again, as per usual....JJ adds a little quality depth at the SG and SF positions....hopefully Suns will re-sign Tabuse with their extra roster space

aww great, all these transaction happening right when i am about to start my new dynasty, guess i have to hold it off until the lineups are set for awhile

That's why I don't like this trade. I wish they hadn't included Lampe in the trade, he's got the most upside.
Sat Jan 22, 2005 5:23 pm
im keeping my eye on lampe..knicks never even gave him a chance..
as far as this trade goes, now the suns will have a nice 6 man rotation going, slowly adding more players. Now they need a decent back up big man.
Sat Jan 22, 2005 5:25 pm
They need a power forward off the bench that can play defence and get sopme buckets in the low post. Hunter should be fine at center.
Sat Jan 22, 2005 6:26 pm
The thing about Lampe is that he's a PF/SF, with Marion and Amare on the team, and they will be for a while to come, he would never get any PT.
At most he'd be playing like 12 MPG which really doesn't help him any bit. I like it for him in that he can go to a team where he'll actually play. Jackson Vroman is like Voskuhl, a PF who can bang, and can be put in at center.
Jacobsen is replaced by Jim Jackson who is also less one dimensional, and 10 times the defender.
Sat Jan 22, 2005 7:36 pm
Bad bad trade for the Suns.
They gave two guys with huge upside in Vroman and Lampe.
They also gave their unselfish sharpshooting wingman in Casey Jacobson who was coming into his own.
They gave all that up for the chemistry killing Jim Jackson and a 2nd rounder.
Watch Casey jacobson blow up now in New Orleans, along with Lampe in a couple of seasons.

Firs off, Dalembert doesn't play for the Suns. And second: Jimmy Jackson just got traded to the Hornets and didn't even play one game there. Great deal for the Hornets. And I don't think the Suns will end their 6 game losing streak with this trade.

You tool, he said...
Yea I heard that, the Suns lineup would then be:
Sat Jan 22, 2005 8:57 pm
Lampe will kick ass soon, but he wasnt gonna do it on Phx anyways so there was no point in hoarding him
Sun Jan 23, 2005 12:41 am
Im sure this trade wont affect phoenix perfomance...
Sun Jan 23, 2005 10:57 am
I think the trade can only make them better, their depth at the big man positions was:
PF - Marion | Outlaw | Lampe | Vroman
C - Amare | Hunter | Voskuhl
and is now..
PF - Marion | Outlaw
C - Amare | Hunter | Voshkuhl
so they lost 2 guys who were young, but really were never going to play on the team. Vroman's potential ends at being a role player who hustles, rebounds and defends, he has no offensive game to speak of, and he's not a shot blocking presence.
Lampe has Mehmet Okur like potential except he doesn't have the rebounding or mix it up attitude, but can be good.
Their depth at the swingman positions was:
SG - Joe Johnson | Casey Jacobsen
SF - Quentin Ricahrdson | Casey Jacobsen
no it is...
SG - Joe Johnson | Jim Jackson
SF - Quentin Ricahrdson | Jim Jackson
I don't know why some are calling JJ a chemistry killer, but he will be a very good addition, and he's a much better player than Casey Jacobsen in almost every aspect of the game.
The best move for the Suns right now would be to trade Quentin Richardson for a big man, or for some depth. Joe Johnson is a much better player than him. He's more efficient offensively, he is a smarter player, and he has the little playmaking ability that can help them.
When playoff time comes, defense becomes much more important, Joe Johnson can be a very good defender if the team decides to focus on that at instants, while Q-Rich is a weak defender at best. Joe Johnson also doesn't make himself so one dimensional offensively, and he won't have nights where he takes 7 three's making 1, and just hurts the team because he doesn't do much else.

Sure everything you mentioned is true and the Suns can only get better.
IF, there are no more injuries. We've seen this team with injuries and it's not pretty. If a Marion or Stoudemire gets injured then there's barely anything there backing them up. This trade is slightly better than the first one. But for my general opinion check the sig.
Tue Jan 25, 2005 5:59 am
good deal for both teams
but the hornets should be completley happy
they were not going to get anything from jackson, he wasnt going to play for them, he was no help.
they got 3 young guys for basically nothing.

But Jim was traded initially from Houston for David Wesley, so really it's Wesley for Casey, Lampe & Vroman?

No, it isn't at all actually.
