Reality NBA

Wed Nov 19, 2003 11:40 pm

"Reality TV" seems to have taken over, every second show is a form of reality TV, and though the majority of it is shizer-housen, people watch...

So I'm thinking this may work for the NBA in certain ways, particularly in bringing attention and excitement to the league. Here are some of my ideas:

"American Big Man": Like American/Australian/Brittish Idol, they could search for a real centre to play in the NBA. The prospects have to go through all sorts of training camps etc, and are voted in  The winner is then further trained by the best big man coaches in the country, receives tips and advice from hall of fame big men, particularly brainy ones like Bill Walton. After being chosen, the big fella receives special entry into the NBA draft (rules must be broken in the spirit of achieving reality TV) and is then chosen by a team. Before the draft, the winner spends the entire time working on his game and training.

"The Franchise": In Australia we had a show called "The Club" where they chose players for a brand new amateur football club, which they then followed through the season. It was quite a shocking display of Australian culture at it's er... most interesting :D Anyways, the NBA could incorporate the expansion Bobcats into a reality TV show, following the franchise as it is created and goes through its first season, showing us locker room squabbles, issues, trainings, etc. Anothre golden idea.

"On the Road": This show could follow a random player on the road once a week, go where he goes, put microphones everywhere, and see how NBA players prepare for games, their routines, the actual game, post game, hotel room nookie, etc.

Any thoughts, ideas... anything... at all? :)

ESPN had a show similar to your idea for On The Road called "The Life." They would follow various pro athletes around for a few weeks to see what their real day-to-day life is actually like. I remember one epsiode was about Darius Miles and Quentin Richardson...it was great...especially the way they would continually mess with Corey Maggette for no reason.

They also had "the season" where they would follow a whole team for a season. It was also a great show...I saw the 01-02 Clippers ep.

lol, personally, i think that would ruin the NBA, unless David Stern finds that ticket sales are down 99%, i doubt they would do something like that.

also.... why does it have to be a Center?? :?

Sure, we laugh about it right now, but at the rate Reality TV is taking over the tube, would it really surprise anyone to see ideas such as these?

Because there aren't many good centres in the league. Finding the next Shaq would be more interesting (I can't believe I used the word "interesting" in association with reality TV) than finding the next great shooting guard.

but... the only ppl they could get would be NCAA players or ex NCAA players who never thought about making the L rite?
also, their is a large scale programme thats going on looking for the next best C, PF, SF, SG, and PG its called the NBDL
seriously though, i think reality TV would kill the NBA, so what first they do it to wrestling thn to basketball? after they start a show like that, there'd be topics like "the NBA games aren't real, or they are rigged!"

Stevan you have a wild imagination

Cool, wish I had ESPN :)

And yeah the first idea would involve a centre because they're so rare. Seriously, you could pull a guy with size off the street, and have him ready to compete by the next season even if he's never played the game :D Greg Ostertag's in the league ain't he?

I was just reminded of that show Hoop Dreams... that was pretty cool, they should have done one on Lebron... maybe they did? I know I read somewhere there was a book about his last season in highschool.

I heard during the game vs. Washington that James was an All-State Football Wide Receiver as well.

For those of you who don't follow American Football, 6'8" 250lbs is quite a nice size Receiver, even in football he was giant, he could have started at Offensive Line.

I think it would be pretty funny to cram a bunch of NBA players into a Big Brother house. :D

Big Brother NBA.....lets see we could have
Brad Miller and Shaq, Doug Christie and Rick Fox, Chris Childs and Kobe, Jermaine Oneal and Corliss Williamson, and Rash-weed Wallace with an ounce of chronic (joined also by the rest of the Blazers and their parole officers)

THere was a funny commercial about it!There were Corey Magette and other young players+some average people and they followed K-Mart everywhere he went but then they started to watch TV,they left him alone.
K-Mart called them with him to the basement and they followed him(there was a phone in the basement) and Kenyon walked to the phone and inserted coind to call his momma, others asked what's here and Kenyon said that he is afraid of the darkness!others were so pissed! it was very funny!
