The "Annual Clippers Stupid Offseason of Destruction&qu

Sun Sep 28, 2003 10:30 am

goes to the Golden State Warriors. After almost coming back and making the playoffs last year, they trade their best player Jamison and their best rebounder Fortson to Dallas for Nick Van Exel and some other people who won't do much. Not only that, but they trade Bobby Sura, allow Earl Boykins (the Laker killer) to leave, and fail to resign Gilbert Arenas.

In second place, Sacramento trades Keon Clark to Utah and second round picks for a second round pick??? I'm sorry, but Keon Clark is much better than any rookie you pick up in the second round. I was not happy about Pollard and Turkoglu being traded, but it made their team better.

In third place, the Clippers. They traded Darius Miles, a future star, for the services of Andre Miller for one season. They had two quality point guards in Marko Jaric and Dooling. I guess they just enjoy playing the lottery.

You might want to think about the fact that the NBA, as much as we fans would like to forget, is a business, and how good a player is isn't the only factor governing the deals that go around. If fans like you and I can distinguish between a good trade and a bad trade just based on the players involved in it, there's no reason basketball experts can't.

In both the Keon Clark trade and the Golden State trades, money was a huge motive.

i think the knicks need to join that list..spree for van horn was not good...at least pick up a bigman even if its a back up....

also the clippers didnt even try sign and trade with Miami for Odom...at least get something in return..

At first I thought re-signing Odom would be the decision that the Clippers would do but I realized, why re-sign him if he doesn't even have the desire to play for your franchise? Plus remember that 6 years with a multimillion dollar contract is ridiculous for a guy who has not even played a full season yet because of injuries or drug problems. The Clippers don't need an unhappy Odom for 6 years.

Teams that had terrible (or at least reasonably bad/unproductive) offseasons:

Golden State

Lost Arenas to Washington, then decided to start again. That meant dealing Jamison for NVE. While Jamison has gained a reputation for being putting up good numbers on a bad team, he was still their best player. In NVE, they have a player who doesn't want to be there and who may be gone if the Knicks make an offer the Warriors can't (or at least won't) refuse.

Utah

Lost two future Hall of Famers, failed to sign any of the high profile free agents, and their biggest offseason addition was Keon Clark. It could be worse - they still have Kirilenko, Harpring and...well, they have Kirilenko and Harpring. In the Western Conference, you can miss the playoffs even if you have a .500 record or greater. The Jazz will have a tough time coming close to making the postseason.

Indiana

Lost Brad Miller, upset their players (notably their best player) by firing Isiah Thomas. Larry Bird's tough "like it or we'll be happy to trade you" approach to issues such as these is, in my opinion, foolish - how long before he develops a Krause-like reputation and free agents are alienated?

Los Angeles Clippers

Not as bad as it could have been, but could have been better had Dre Miller and Odom not left town without some compensation. Even a couple of draft picks is better than nothing.

Atlanta

I think it's safe to say, they're re-re-rebuilding. Trading Glenn Robinson and picking up Brandon's contract will give them some cap relief, but these days cap space isn't enough to lure free agents. Apart from that, not much has been happening with the Hawks. If they're going anywhere in 2003/2004, it's down.

New York

With this offseason's changes, they won't fall to the bottom of the league, but they probably won't do any better than last year either.

well i didn't expect the Clipps to resign Magette..but at least they brought two back....better than i ever expected....(y)

as for the clippers, no matter what kind of spin you put on it, losing 3 starters and getting nothing back is a bad offseason

OT- my 500th post! taking playful jabs at the lakers and lakers fans has had its moments (the time adulterer was crying... words cannot express the joy i felt) and pretending to know anything about the nba, more specifically the bulls, is fun too. but seriously, this is just another indication i need to do something else better with my free time. man, the nba needs to start already

Forgot about Olowokandi leaving. Guess it was the shock of seeing the Clippers match two contracts totalling over $130 mil.

If Kandi wouldve stay then he's numbers wouldve go up.This year Melvin Ely is gonna get the starting job at C cause i read somewhere that Kaman is injured and may miss the entire season (N) but Wilcox will get more PT (Y) so losing Kaman (if this is true) doesn't hurt so much cause i belive that Wilcox would put up better numbers than Kaman will...

Well, the Sixers aren't that bad at all so they really didn't need a off season but I think they could have did better in free agent signings/trades.

But I think it was a good move getting rid of Van Horn.

Olowakandi was a lazy bum was Odom was burnt out. In retrospect it wasn't a bad idea lettting them go. Baylor (Clipper GM) was interviewed after they let both of those guys go and said that the Clippers still were going to make some moves (trade). I guess the move he was refferring to was getting that center from Seattle. I still think they should make a run at Terry.

Also, last year when Seattle traded GP and Mason, I thought Seattle was ripped off only getting Ray Allen (and Ollie). But now Seattle has the last laugh becuase GP's moved on.
By the way, I like the picture of Kobe on the SLAM website.

They'd have to trade for him. He's back with the Hawks.
