Draft Questions

Postby bballer22 on Sat Sep 27, 2003 4:23 pm

1st. a collage player may stay in collage as long s he wants but can only play for 4 years? is that true? if so y cant he play longer?

2nd Europian players wh play pro in Europe cannot play in collage coz they were getting payed by their club, then y do some of them pull their name out of the draft? isnt it worth to see how far can u go and to stay and train with future picks?

1. I guess that's just the rule that's been decided on.

2. It varies from player to player, but most of the players that withdraw their names probably figure that they could improve their draft position next season if they work on their game, and also have a better chance at actually getting some PT. By withdrawing their name, they cannot be drafted. They can then enter the draft next year.

no, a player can enter the draft only once. that's the reason why some players withdrawn their names, so that they ensure to be drafted higher the next season.

there was a problem with sabonis who was drafted twice (in 1984 and 1986), but I think the first time he was drafted (by the hawks), his selection was cancelled because of contracts problem

A player can re-enter the draft, but he cannot play any organised basketball between the drafts.

For example: There was talk of Steve Francis sitting out the 1999/2000 season so he could re-enter the draft the following year. Not only would he have to sit out the NBA season, he could not play in any other league. Had he done that, he would have been eligible to be drafted again in 2000.

Yeah, Sabonis was drafted by the Hawks in 1985 but was then ruled ineligible. He entered the draft again in 1986, and was selected by Portland.

actually a player can 'redshirt' a season due to major injury, giving him an additional year of eligibility i.e. evan eschmeyer who did this several times. i think he was on the northwestern bball team for 6yrs?!
