Yep, I think the Suns will go for 60+ and therefore Nash will be a top candidate. However, if he was to put up 25/5/12 and the Suns have the best record going into the playoffs then he deserves it, unless LBJ and Kobe go absolutely nuts. Last year his stat line was 19/4/10 and the Suns went 54-28, so I think its safe to say unless the Suns go off for 70+ (which won't happen) he won't make it three in a row.

I'm shocked that Nash won it twice in a row. It'll be a conspiracy if he wins it 3 times in a row. Not that I don't like Nash (I do), but it'd be unfair to John Stockton and all the other great point guards of the past.

cyanide, nash got away with murder this year getting MVP...i really like him and he's always who i go to when i cant beat someone in live....but he just didnt improve everyone around him this past year like he had done the year before. my jaw dropped when i heard it wasnt lebron. C'mon flip murray averaged 13 points per game...the first time i heard on sports center "flip murray with the steal" i was like, "who the hell is flip murray?" I dont like lebron (i dont know why, i'm not denying he can ball, just something about him bugs me)...but he deserved it last year

Some of the potential MVP candidates last year had either dropped their stats (Duncan) or their team's record wasn't "good" enough compared to Nash's Suns (Kobe, LJ, Garnett, Nowitzki). While Billups improved his stats and Brand's team standings improved, it wasn't enough to get away the attention from Nash who improved his stats (scoring) and still made the Suns a winning team despite the absence of their best player, which is Amare. Cassell, as some say, is the reason for Brand's LAC winning ways. While Billups was the closest against Nash for MVP, IMO, Nash's "no-Amare" storyline probably won it over against Billups.

Well, there is no doubt that Lebron is the main candidate, but...if we put up players like Billups, I think Arenas can be menthioned. He is a great player, a great passer, a great scorer, a terrific defender, and if Washington will improve their record this year (whitch I am sure of, I think they will be in the top-3, since of the additions), he might be one of the candidates. C'mon, the guy averages like 30 points and 7 assists, his team makes the playoffs. If they get in the top 3 he might have a shot.

look so wat i picked Bosh i am Raps fan and i think he has a shot at it u dont have to call me a idiot because i picked jesus now tht is being disrespectful (no offense but it is) and those were my picks for being MVP candates so plz dont call me a idiot coz i didnt do nutin wrong and yes i would put Garnett and others on the poll but i cant change it anymore

O and Nash ya i wouldn't see him as 3rd time in a row MVP in a row ya i know Bill Russel,Chamberlain, Larry Bird won it 3 times in a row but they were C and PF ya i know dosnt matter wat postion they play i just dont think Nash has tht much of a chance for a 3rd and year and i must admit i shit myself when Kobe didnt win MVP

Does anyone else have a nagging feeling that if the Suns win 50-60 games, Steve Nash stands a good chance of making it three in a row? I'm not pulling for it to happen but with the way voting has gone these last two years I can't help but wonder if Nash has the MVP locked up or will at least be one of the top candidates as long as the Suns remain contenders

I really disagreed with Nash winning MVP last year. I wouldn't be surprised if Nash did 20/5/11, with Amare and people started saying, "Wow he scored 20 ppg with Amare back" or something stupid like that, like last year.

Well, they did lose:

Quentin Richardson: 14.9ppg 6.1rpg 2.0apg 1.2spg 0.3bpg | 35.9mpg

Joe Johnson: 17.1ppg 5.1rpg 3.5apg 1.0spg 0.3bpg | 39.5mpg

Amare Stoudemire: 26.0ppg 8.9rpg 1.6apg 1.0spg 1.6bpg | 36.1mpg

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total Loss: -58.0ppg -20.1rpg -7.1apg -3.2spg -2.2bpg

Thats a big chunk of their team gone. They did get Boris Diaw and Raja Bell, but that is no where near enough to make up for the loss of Johnson, Stoudemire and Richardson. In 05/06 they went 62-20 with those 3 playing, and Nash won the MVP with a statline of 15.5ppg 3.3rpg 11.5 apg, good - but not MVP type numbers because most MVP's are usually high scorers.

However, before Nash arrived in Phoenix, the Suns went 29-53 and were 6th in their division. Therefore, I think despite his stats (which are still very good) the fact that he was the main factor in a change of 33 wins was enough for him to win the MVP. In 05/06, The Suns lost that huge chunk of their team that I showed earlier, and gained Boris Diaw and Raja Bell. Those two players were hardly stars on their respective teams before they went to Phoenix, so things were looking very, very bad for the Suns.

04/05 Stats:

Boris Diaw: 4.8ppg 2.6rpg 2.3apg

Raja Bell: 12.3ppg 3.2rpg 2.6apg

As you can see, thats not a huge improvement over the 3 guys I mentioned earlier. However, Nash just showed how he makes everyone around him better, and the Suns, who most people were projecting to possibly miss the playoffs because of the huge loss, went 54-28. A change of 8 wins, and a playoff appearance as the 2nd seed and went back to the Conference finals. Nash went for 18.8ppg 4.2rpg 10.5apg during the regular season, and went 20.4 3.7rpg 10.2apg. I think that deserves MVP honors because he not only improved himself, but his team that looked like it was heading towards lottery with 3 of their starting 5 gone, had a great record in the regular season and the playoffs, all while he was playing the most important position on the floor - the point guard.

Though I think Kobe deserves it and should get it this season, just like last season, I think LeBron will win it. He's going to dominate in too many ways this season. If he shows he can play defense I think its locked up for him.

Nash totally deserved it last year, the only other player to consider was Wade but you had no idea Miami would ride his back to the title.

Nash never deserved it his first year, back when Amare was healthy and Joe Johnson was lighting people up.

I'll stick with Dirk, continuing the trend of the international players winning it. (not really a trend yet, but i think there could be something of the sort happening)

Runners up: Nash, Billups, LeBron and Kobe. <----in no particular order.

Flite, that was a brilliant post. Kudos!

Nash won't win it this year simply because he's not going to play as many minutes as he had to last year. If D'Antoni has his way, Nash will only play 32mpg and Banks will fit into the system well enough to get 16-18mpg.

I just don't see a player that is on a team that is below 6th in their respective conference winning the award. The Lakers could be a 48 win team, but still be 7th in the West. Kobe has pledged to get others more involved this season, a la the first 4 games of the Lakers-Suns series last year. If he gets his 30ppg and manages to average 7-8apg the way AI has been doing the past couple of season, I could see him winning the award. But if he resorts to his old ways, some other candidates I could see winning it:

Dirk
Wade - Shaq going to have less of a role...Wade is the leader on clearly the best team in the East.
LeBron - I think the Cavs have to be in the top 4 of the East for LeBron to have a chance. Lower than 4 in the East isn't very good at all.

Longshot:

Carmelo - We all know he had an impressive offseason. It really depends on how much support he can get from Andre Miller, Kenyon Martin and Co.
Yao - It would be tough to give him the award when he has a possible 30ppg scorer on his team, but if he is healthy and averages 25 and 12, along with some blocks, he can definitely be a frontrunner.

I wonder if Dwight Howard can sneak into Top 5 in MVP voting....it's not out of the question, he's better than Amare....

It'll take 50 wins from Orlando for the possibility. Could happen, that's IF everyone is healthy and they play well. Last year he got 15.8 & 12.5 per game. He'll need to increase his bpg (1.4) and apg (1.5) if only slightly. I think his scoring will go up at least 2ppg as well.

anyways, sportingbets take on things

I think there are around 10 guys who are capable of winning the MVP title this upcoming season. Here are my predictions in no particular order.

Steve Nash
Despite his questionable MVP trophys in the past 2 years he sure is a guy who deserves it. His stats might be not MVP worthy but he sure knows who to lead his team. And thats what a MVP should do.

Dwayne Wade
He really went crazy in the playoffs carrying the Heat to their first title. If he can continue this run in the regular season he should be the safe pick to win the title.

LeBron James
Many thought he deserved it last season but I clearly say no. He's an outstanding player but not the material for instance Jordan was made of. He can put up great number, but Arenas can do it too. He's not that kind of a leader. If Cleveland can win around 60 games this season he might win it.

Chauncey Billups
He's in the situation Nash was last year. Big Ben is gone and nobody predicts the Pistons to be as solid as last year. But I think they will and this is because of Billups. He's my nr. 1 candidate along with Wade.

Dirk Nowitzki
He has a chance for sure, but clearly it was not him who lifted the Mavs to the record they had last year. The overall game performance by the whole team was outstanding and it will be the same this year. Has only a slight chance to win it.

Tim Duncan
Well, he dropped in nearly every category this past season. But he showed he can still dominate in the game in the playoffs. If Duncan can find to his old game without being plagued by his injury he sure has a chance to win it this year.

Kevin Garnett
Always a safe bet. He's outstanding and with the improved Timberwolves they have a chance to make the Playoffs. So Garnett has clearly a chance to win the award.

Kobe Bryant and Paul Pierce:
I think it will depend how well their teams do in the next season. Both are outstanding players but the team around them is not championship material. Kobe may have the better chances to win the Award than Pierce.

Other players who can be considered:
Carmelo Anthony
Gilbert Arenas
Tracy McGrady
Yao Ming

My prediction:
Billups or Wade

Garnett, Duncan, Nowitzki, James and Wade are practically automatic candidates unless an injury hits them.
