trades

in this post tell what trades you think will put a team over the top or trades that were dumb such as scottie pippen goin back 2 chi-town.

First of all, Pippen wasn't traded back to Chicago; he signed with the Bulls as a free agent. And aside from any potential salary cap restrictions, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find an NBA franchise that wouldn't want Scottie Pippen on its roster. Anyway, to the meat of your question ... I think that of all the trades we've seen so far, the deal sending Sprewell to Minnesota throws some great potential into Flip Saunders' lap. For starters, Terrell Brandon wasn't even playing for them, so it's not like they lose their starting point guard. In return, they get a real competitor in Sprewell, who's presence (along with their other off-season additions) should appease Kevin Garnett. In the past, KG's lobbied for more fire in the locker-room, for guys who're passionate about winning, and that's what they'll get with Latrell. (Sam Cassell, too.) Of course, chemisty remains a concern, and the whole thing could blow up in Kevin McHale's face, but given time, I think Minnesota's a legitimate contender in 2003-2004.

bulls dont look so bad....... i see chandler and curry being pretty good.....

C curry
PF chandler
SF jalen rose
SG scottie pippen
pg jamal crawford/ jay willi ams

doesnt look too bad...... pippen is invaluable, he makes the pass that leads to the assist, and is patient. true, he couldntve won those rings without jordan, but on the other hand, jordan couldntve won them without pippen. those two could shut down any pg/sg/sf combo

I wasn't saying scottie wasn't good but in portland or elsewhere he'd may have won a ship or went deeper in the playoffs this year

Yeah, I hear ya, but since Pippen's already won six NBA championships, I don't think he has much left to prove in the League. Instead, it looks like he wants to finish his career where it all started and help the Baby Bulls along the way. I suppose some people may consider it a "dumb" move on his part, but I think it's pretty cool.

s'possedly he wants to retire in chicago and then join the management.

I wish Chicago can make the playoffs this year or else Scottie's playoff-streak will be gone.

Williams is injured...so probably Hirnrich( :?: ) is the backup PG or SG.

The two trades that have gone down so far have all been pretty sensible, though one team in each of the trades has come out looking like the clear loser of the deal. Minnesota and San Antonio have had the best part of the trades they were involved in, while Atlanta and Indiana each emerged from the two deals with consolation prizes.

Sun Jul 27, 2003 7:20 pm

I think Atlanta came out great in that trade. They traded Robinson (who really didn't fit) for basically nothing but cap relief. With that cap relief they can resign Jason Terry without luxury tax concerns and I also read they may be looking at adding a big name coach, for which the saved money helps as well.

Sun Jul 27, 2003 7:44 pm

I didn't think they'd get that cap relief until next season? I can the Hawks' reason for making the deal, but if I had to pick a loser out of the four teams involved in the trade, I'd say Atlanta.

Well Brandon's contract will come off the books in februari, which is before the end of the season. The team's salary at the end of the season (don't know the exact date, but it's somewhere after the season) is what's used to calculate the luxury tax. So technically they can go over the "luxury cap" now, and then in februari they'll go back under it and then they won't have to pay luxury tax at all.

Ah, I see. Thanks for clarifying that. :)
