Los Angeles D-Fenders Announce Team Name, Unveil Logo
EL SEGUNDO, CA, July 26, 2007 – The Los Angeles Lakers have become the first NBA team in history to own an NBA Development League team. The Lakers wanted to give their fans an opportunity to name the team with an online naming contest and fans selected the name LOS ANGELES D-FENDERS.

The Los Angeles D-FENDERS will play their home games at STAPLES Center the same arena as their big brother team the Los Angeles Lakers. The D-Fenders games will take place either pre or post Lakers home games. “The D-League has been instrumental in helping improve the quality of play in the NBA and we are thrilled to be the first NBA franchise to own a team in the Development League,” said Jeanie Buss, Executive Vice President Of Business Operations for the Los Angeles Lakers. “I am so pleased that our devoted fans participated in the online naming contest and voted for the winning name the Los Angeles D-FENDERS.”

The Los Angeles D-FENDERS official website: www.d-fenders.com. Check back soon for further updates.

The general manager and head coach for the team will be announced later this summer.

.... someone please bomb LA right now....

though it would be really ironic and funny if they end up having the worst defense in the D-League.
Maybe they’ll draft a team of Ben Wallaces

good stuff, hopefully they wont be the last. It's a very good system, much like the reserves in the AFL.

It's not a common team name, but at least it has something to do with the city the team's in. And "Knicks" doesn't sound too bad.

Theres an advantage to this sort of team, since anyone on this D-Fenders team has a chance to be called up anytime if there is some sort of injury. It also means more flexibility on their roster because they can have any player on the inactive list play their D-League game rather then just sit there. Bynum, Farmar, Green, Pinnock, Turiaf, and Wafer are eligible to be on the D-Fenders team, and it might be useful.

Somehow I feel like I heard this news before some time ago. Not sure though.

Not too thrilled about the name but I've never really liked most of the D-league team names anyways. (n)

Sorry for posting in this thread again so soon.
I thought'd you be able to figure this out though, D-League, D-Fenders.. you know. I'm not liking the whole "J-Rich" kinda nicknames but this at least makes 10% sense.

They better teach these D-League guys some actual defense though..

What's that have to do with NYC? I never knew there was any meaning behind it.

Well I'm not entirely sure so you could look it up but it was something with New York being New Amsterdam when the Dutch owned it (wtf did they trade it lol) and those silly dutchmen wore pants called Knickerbockers.

A Knickerbocker is a descendant of the original Dutch settlers of the south end of Manhattan Island in New York City previously known as New Amsterdam

I feel like i went back in a time machine to 1975 when i read this name. I think the D-league deliberatly chooses corney ass names to further distinguish the losers who end up there instead of the real nba.

I like the idea of playing the young guys in the game before....gives fans who attend the games a chance to see some of them, if they are dedicated enough to come along a hour or two earlier....

 I was wondering if someone would ever ask that....I'd like to say the league has statistics that keep those but unfortunately not :(

the points, I just check the scoresheet after the game, so they're accurate....as for the rest of it, it's based on recollection from myself & other people....I've got a pretty good memory so I can do a pretty good estimate, give or take 1 or 2....turnovers are pretty easy to keep....it's pretty easy to remember how many times you stuffed up....the rebounding category is hardest to estimate for sure....sometimes, I might have pulled down 20 boards (due mostly to poor shooting %'s in our league), but I'd underestimate it....some games I might overestimate....it all evens out....I think my rebound average is pretty accurate, give or take 1-2 boards per game....

overall, I'm having a pretty average season....last season I think I averaged about 15ppg, 7rpg but was 2nd-3rd option on team most games....this season I'm 1st option but have struggled against sometimes swarming defenses that sometimes throw double & triple teams at me....I'm definitely not use to that....that's what happens I guess if you burn teams with 4-5 3pters made on several occasions....most of guys on the team haven't really played bball much before, but they're learning a lot & getting a lot better, which is always good to see....

and before you ask, I play in a pretty mediocre league so stats don't mean much....are more just there for fun & to give some sort of record-keeping guide to myself....
