i was always wondering what do team names mean... some that i dont know is?

Lakers?
Spurs
Cavaliers
Clippers
Mavrics
Bucks
Nets (and Mets form baseball)
pistons
celtics
if some1 could answere some of thses it would be great... and y they would name a team that??

i think:
'lakers' cuz the franchise originated in minnesota, which has many many lakes
maverick is simialr to cowboy. there are/were many of those in dallas
mets is for metropolitans
a piston is a part in the engine of a car. detroit was famous for mass production of cars

Apparently something to do with the settlers who moved west, "blazing new trails" to the Pacific Northwest.

To quote the NBA Encyclopedia, it represents "the Western heritage of Texas".
Cavaliers
Selected by the community, because it represented fearlessness men who never surrendered.
Clippers
Throwback to the San Diego days, named after the sailing ships that passed through San Diego bay.
Mavrics
As with the Spurs, it ties in with the cowboy image of Texas.
Bucks
A quote from the then-GM of the Bucks John Erickson - "the predominance of bucks (in Wisconsin) led us to the name".

Mets, I don't know. Nets, called so because that's one of the most important aspects of basketball - the net. Or so the NBA Encyclopedia says.
pistons
Originally the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons - they were named the Pistons after the owner's (Fred Zollner) company - a piston-making plant. When they moved to Detroit, the "Motor City", the name was still appropriate.
celtics
Chosen because it dates back to the Original Celtics from New York, a barnstorming team with an impressive record. Also due to the Irish heritage in Boston.
Most of that is taken from the NBA Encyclopedia. I believe NBA.com's history section has similar info.

those are very good, but what i dont understant is what do irish have to do with celtics, same thing with that LeBron Jame's team, on espn they kept saying luck of the irish??? its an american team??
also, what is a cavalier, and a spur?? and what is a clipper?? coz Dmile and all of then do that thing where they fist their heads and i though that clippers where the clippers u prob cut hair with???

The word Celtics is associated with Ireland, as far as I'm aware. Due to Boston's Irish heritage, the name was chosen by the team.
"Luck of the Irish" is an old expression, referring to four-leaf clovers, which of course are considered lucky.
Spurs were worn on the heels of cowboy boots, so that when the horse was kicked by the rider, it would respond fairly quickly.
As I said already, a Clipper is a tall sailing ship. It's got nothing to do with cutting hair.
Cavaliers were cavalrymen, known for their bravery and fight-to-the-end mentality in battle.

I'm pretty sure St. Vincent-St. Mary's (the school James attends) is an Irish-Catholic private school (but yes, it is here in the U.S.) Their sports teams are nicknamed the "Irish"...thus the popular phrase "the luck of the Irish."

I only know that the term Knickerbocker somewhat refers to the early Dutch settlers in New York...
