The Official NBA Encyclopedia wrote:The term Knickerbockers refers to the early Dutch settlers who came to what is now New York, and their rolled-up-just-below-the-knee trousers, called knickerbockers or knickers. The name had become synonymous with the city. According to Fred Podesta, an aide to club founder Ned Irish, naming the team Knickerbockers in 1946 was simple. "We all put a name in the hat, and when we pulled them out, most of them said Knickerbockers." The name is generally shortened to Knicks.
